The odd time over the years when desperate for good Baitfish out there have filleted and skinned Grey Sharks, cut into long strips and caught good Snaps Straylining. Also if your targeting a big Snap and have Gurnard only in the bin try two fillets skin to skin on a two hook Strayline rig. Caught alot this methodWink

Seems crazy given gurnard are superior to eat, smudge you surprised me. Shark into gurnard sounds awesome Geoff, gurnard into snapper seems like sacrilege. All I know is blue cod love eating their mates, and nothing apart from stingray eats snapper...Crayfish well Wink
Why choose either diving or fishing when you can do both. Besides crayfish tail is very good bait!!

Food is food to all who eat meat.

Smudge and snap Geoff,
A crying shame you would use a superior eating fish to catch an inferior one.

And Smudge, shame shame.
I suspect your large record gurnard catches were caught on gurnard.
Your secrets out.

Damn cannibal fish they'll eat anything.

Spiny dogfish - the scourge of all deep drop fisherman here in WA. They seem to be in plague proportions at times. I have filleted them using a whole fillet as bait when targeting Blue-Eye Trevalla (Bluenose) with success.

JDs will eat baby snapper. I had a discussion with a buddy the other day about the legality of using undersize fish for bait. Personally, I wouldn't, but I'm not sure it's illegal?

Some years ago a popular fishing personality who used to regularly clean up the Kingfish section of many big money comps, got found out that he was using baby trevally for his live baits...EmbarrassedOuch

This begs the question of when as often happens a undersize snapper is hooked & is immediately swallowed by a JD before the snapper can be wound up & released.

In such an instance can the JD be kept or should it be released due to having been caught with an undersize live bait albeit unintentionally ??

Given that scenario Bazza I'd be keeping the JD and returning the undersize snapper to the water, dead or alive.
I would like to think that as there was no intent to use an undersize bait common sense would prevail but let's not get side tracked by common sense.

Can now fully understand why smudge and others use gurnard for bait, despite gurnard being a nice eating fish imo.

Quote. Newzealand sea anglers guide, Raymond Doogue and John Moreland. 1960

Red Gurnard.

Quote. " It would be surprising if anyone went after these fish for their eating qualities as they are a relatively poor food fish or bait fish.,being inclined to dryness and extremely bony"
How perception changes  with time.
Similar things were said about Kahawai-dry and tough.
Of course most people who said this about kahawai had never even tried them.
To be fair on smudge i think he probably uses only big tough gurnard over a meter long for bait and keeps those small sweet  50cm jobs for the dinner table.

In the USA, gurnard are called sea robin and are almost universally regarded as "trash fish".
