random question for anyone who has had one of these - particularly the larger 3.6 or 3.8m versions

when used as a motor boat - will they plane with enough hp on the transom? perhaps 6 or 8hp?
No disintegrations!

The characteristics of a good displacement rowing/sailing boat are in opposition to a good planing boat. It almost certainly has upturned buttocks aft, in which case it will not plane.

If the hull bottom is curved like a banana over the last half of the hull it's displacement.

Straight with no rocker: planing.

Semidisplacement are in between.

See the difference?

That last one is 22' long, and specifically designed to go at a speed of 10-20km/h. At those speeds it's smooth and non pounding. As soon as more power is applied, it climbs up on its flat rear sections, sticks its bow in the air and gets up to 40km/h.

The first one is my little D5 dinghy. It is very smooth and easy to move at low speeds as the curved stern provides little drag, but apply more throttle and it just digs a hole and burns fuel.

The middle one is the one I'm building now. Hopefully it will plane!

No they don't plane. Best with abbot 4hp on the back and chug along.
I have put heaps of hp on the back and it just makes it handle terribly
