Went out to have another look today, just to make sure last weekend wasn't a fluke. Managed to snag 4 nice fish this morning, best of 7 pounds, with the little one being 3.5 pounds. Had plenty of hits as well and managed to break off a couple of flies (a double of solid fish doesn't work well with light leaders). The little fella was a tagged fish, which is a first for me.

Between Gisborne Point and Ruato Bay. Most of the action was around 17 to 22 metres.

Superb couple of days jigging thursday and friday.
We caught trout from 12 inch new releases to fat hogs up to 3.23kg (7lb) fishing mostly Gisborne point and Hauparu bay.
Thursday hooked about 12 and kept 6. Two fishing.
Friday was very good fishing with over 25 hooked and with 3 fishing we kept another 8-9 plus a few for the guys back at the lodge that wanted an eater to take home.
Gisborne pt fish were either in 15-18m or out in 25-27m  - got our biggest here but fish were of all sizes.
Hauparu bay we were lucky to find a slot just loaded - see sounder shot - when we first got there there were far more fish showing- absolutely stacked, Fishing as good as it gets for half an hour with nearly every drop hooking up , net bitch calls being ignored , mayhem and a hell alot of fun too.
Trout were preferring darker Pat Swift patterns - the grey ghost favourite for many years was not flavour of the day.
Thank you Laurie and Garry for sharing the fun.

Last trip for the season on Tuesday with my good friend Barry Stevens.
Started jigging at Gisborne pt - only one after half an hour, Tried Ruato and not much happening there.
Hauparu bay was quiet and moose lodge we had two hits- landed one nice one.
Back right down to the transformer / emerys area - nothing happening.
Back to gisborne pt and quiet too with things looking grim.
Last chance saloon up to Haupara bay - hit pay dirt with a favourite hole showing smelt and feeding trout - good fish up to 3.4kg landed - best flies jack spratt and ginger mick with fish in a little deeper than what you would normally find this time - 28-30m

Goof haul of nicely conditioned fish there.  My brother is coming down so we may get out for a fish this coming weekend, weather is looking good for the last weekend on Rotoiti this season.  Last trip out a few weeks ago I found it a bit slow but managed to redeem myself on the way home with a few fish sitting on the edge of a drop off I located on the way back.  Might start of trolling and then see if anything is on the sounder as we troll around before we do any jigging.

So opening on tarawera as I do. Broken steering cable put paid to my normal routine. Luckily I had a mate on the lake who took me fishing on opening day and then towed me back to the ramp. Anyway going to try rotoiti this weekend have heard the narrows is producing. Forecast is southerly so hauparu may be the option? Has anyone been out and found concentrations of fish?

Popped out on to Rotoiti late Sunday afternoon to try out the new minn kota for test#2. Plenty of fish at the eastern end of the lake. They were on the chew and we brought a good feed back home. Grey ghost, jack sprat and some small 25mm lumo Rubber lures seemed to be the order of the day. There will be plenty of hot and cold smoked trout for visiting family at Christmas.

Took me bro out on Tuesday and managed a reasonable haul fishing in 20m depth at the eastern end of the lake. Jack sprat, grey ghost and small rubber tail lures were doing the damage again. Hot and cold smoked trout as well as fried trout have been included in the menu the last few days.

I must make the effort to come over.      Currently waiting for a weather window to go after tuna with my kayak.     Apparently a couple of bluefin tuna 15kg have been caught off New Plymouth.      I saw tuna rolling before XMass but I was anchored and could not follow
Happy New Year to all
