Just spent 3 days fishing Rotoiti with mixed results.     Advise was to fish Ruato.     Found lots of fish in a patch below the house at eastern bush ridge.     Fish did not bite all that well but I managed to keep 8 good fish to 3kg.     Next morning the fish were still there but refused to bite.     Looked for other fish in the area but could only find the odd sign.    When I got back to the fish concentration they had all gone not a single sign on the sounder.     In late afternoon they were back there again but still had their mouth sown up.    A local Kayaker spent most of the time in the area and also blanked out.    On Monday the fish were back in the same bubble but still refused to show any interest in my new UV Grey Ghosts.     Was it the flies or uncooperative fish?    Well I am pleased to say that my flies worked a treat when I fished further along the shore near the point.    There were very few fish around but I still caught 11 fish, far more than the several fancy boats that had accumulated in the area.
I fished with three Grey Ghost flies; the middle one I had painted the head with "UV Blast".   It really glowed under UV torch light.    That fly caught 6 fish out of 11.     It also caught more on Saturday.

Nothing conclusive but worth monitoring if this additive is making flies more attractive.

I am glad I did the trip even though the weather was not the best and sitting in a wet kayak by late afternoon I was stiff, sore and cold.    Back again in November Covid 19 willing.

Cheers

Any news for ANY fishing?
Hoping to get out to King Country this week. Rivers and streams will be running clear but, as an oldie, don't like too big a flow to wade against.

News from Rotoiti on opening day, we kept 8 fish to 3kg, all in beautiful condition.  All caught jigging.  The F & G guys at the ramp said ours was the best haul they'd seen for the day, and that all the fish caught trolling/harling were fairly small.  We caught all of ours at the hole driftng between 16 and 20m.  Yellow Lady, UV Ghost and Kilwell #1 all caught fish.  There wasn't much in the way of sign, they seemed to cruising around

P.S  if anyone is fishing in the area of the hole and snags a Daiwa Laguna jigging oufit, it's mine ErmmCry

Lovely looking fish, Russell. Nice work, particularly as I presume there's no thermocline etc yet, fish still spread out.

Has anybody tried jigging with trout beads at Rotoiti?     Would be interesting to include one in a three fly spread.     After all they go for boobies and H&L globugs like on any other lake.     I shall definitely try 6mm one next time I fish there.    Have developed some great looking ones no one else has done that yet.    Will post pic soon.
Cheers

I admire that you're never afraid to try something new, Herb.

What about a pink lumo bead (commonly used in salt water flasher fishing etc) threaded on to the hook with a bit of flashy material as well (or a veil?). Charged up occasionally, that would stand out down in the gloom at 25+m wouldn't it?

Yes trout spread far and wide with surface temp 13 degrees - hard to find any trout on sounder. You are really hunting structure and smelt signs.
Was thinking the other day of a small glo bug - sure i have tried in past but anything worth a go but egg pattern sensible option early and late in season. Every fish we hooked was on a smelt fly though.

With a spread of three flies trying one egg fly would not be a big handicap.      Since I have no commercial interest in  my fishing I don't mind passing on my method of attaching beads.

The above are 6mm acrylic beads from Ali Express    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32606370086.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.27424c4d7HxPXw 1000 for  about NZ $12

1.    Burry the hook bend and some shaft in the jaws of the vice.

2.    Heat the exposed hook shank with a small butane torch.

3.    Slip the bead over the heated hook and immediately pull up.

4.    The heated metal will melt itself into lower part of the bead hole thus    preserving a better hook gape.

5.    Having the hook bend and point inside the vice jaw stops the heat moving down the hook bend and preserves the integrity of the hook.     I have used this method of years and have never had a hook snap of straighten because of the heating.

6.    Once you are set up the whole procedure takes less than a minute.    The hold is very secure providing the shank is melted deep enough.

Lastly do these beads work?   You bet, they certainly do when I am nymphing on the Tongariro.

I've had a play around with glo bugs for jigging before on Rotoiti. Predominately late in the season in May / June. I typically jig shallower then, and have caught plenty on glo bugs fly fishing in 10-12m of water so couldn't see how it would be any different. I didnt have any success fishing in 15 - 20m of water, i was running the glo bug on the bottom dropper with a couple of smelt flies above.

Absolutely no reason it wouldn't work though. I was using heave and leave glo bugs with the polystyrene eyes, but was trimming the eyes back a bit trying to decrease the flotation so it would hang somewhat at 90 degrees to the main line.

Having trouble finding the range of depth temperatures for Lake Rotoiti Narrows buoy.    The BOP web site has changed from the very clear temperature information graph of last summer.    It was very helpful when trip planning.
Am I missing something on their site?

Cheers

Hmmm...that sux...as far as I can tell it's only reporting surface temp?  Had a good look through the site and can't find the varying depth temps they used to show Disapprove

I have sent an email to BOPRC asking them to display the total water column temperatures and so has F&G scientist, Matt Osborne.

Lets hope that they reinstate this important information.     Matt recons that the fish at Rotoiti are in really top condition for this time of year.     Will have to schedule a trip in the near future.

Cheers
