In the market for a new setup for soft baiting/ micro jigging. Looking at spending 250-300. I've normally gone shimano but open to other brands if there is better quality/value for money there.
Any recommendations on current models much appreciated.

This Okuma combo on Marine Deals is the bargain of the century! Normally close to $100k, down to $179. Put the $99,820 you save towards a new boat...happy days Wink

Microwave 7ft8 ocean angler rod. Mk11 version. Albany hunting and fishing also have some cool new lightweight diawa rods with carbon guides. Mark K recons thats the pick of them. I have the mk1 version and have had no issues.
I prefer longer and lighter to cast further from boat. I also use the light J Braid I think 3 or 4kg.
Have caught legal kingis and pretty big snaps (60 and 75cm) on this setup. Handles pannies very well.

Here fishy, fishy fishy.... Nom, nom, nom

I knew marine deals were pretty good value but that's ridiculous.
Would the ocean angler rods be ok for kobura as as well up to 80gr or is it going to be a bit hard on the tip of a rod like that

If you read the threads on here, it seems micro jigging long rods - designed to cast 20-30g micro jigs well ahead are compatible with soft baiting (long- around 8', fast action). Most rods like that aren't that happy with 80g hanging off the tip. i've fished 30-50g no problem.

Internationally, people seem to micro jig with very bendy rods, but they are dropping straight down, not trying to cast.

Kaburas seem to be more suited to soft action rods, ditto Jitterbugs and other inchikus. More to do with not pulling hooks with the small assists.

At the budget end, I reckon an Okuma X-Factor 7' 6-10kg is soft enough to do the job for slow jigs, and is also adequate - though not ideal - for soft baiting. It depends if your idea of soft baiting is more or less a lob and bump on the bottom, or casting well ahead and fishing the retrieve. If it's the former, then a softer action shorter rod is fine.

You're not going to get an Ocean Angler Microwave and a decent reel for your budget, except second hand. But look up Kaveman's rods (kavemantackle.co.nz) and you might be able to get one and pick up a reel for a bit over $300.

The rod will actually be for my father who is more of a lob style softbaiter. And also loves dragging slow jigs. Perhaps I could give him my shimAno back bone and but something fancy for myself

I picked up one of the new Shimano Kaos rods recently, the 14-42g one, seems very decent for the $$.

I agree Dan, the Penns in the Regiment and Assassin ranges look really nice, good Fuji components, nicely finished. I've been looking at the one that's kind of a cross between heavy soft bait, and light top water.

Haha, now you're talking!
I have my 4-year-old son using the X-Factor for lobbing and dragging soft baits up to 1oz (30g). Being a composite, it's very forgiving in the rod holder, and of high sticking.
Not perfect for 80g slow jigs, but doable I reckon.

If you're going for a new rod for yourself in the medium spend class, my bias is towards the Daiwa range at the moment - Generation Black Slugger, TD Hyper, TD Sol etc.
Check out the thread in the soft baiting forum re who's using what.
