Went out monday 7th March started trolling at around 80m very quiet no birds working caught 2 Albies at 116m hung around the area for a while. Marked quite a bit of bait which was down deep 45m but no action on the surface other than the Albys.  Arrived back at ramp when Izard was there trying to get his boat off the bottom  and onto the trailer , my mate and a couple of  others came to help him. Didnt know he was a forum member until I read his posts.

Just found it too soft and not oily enough. So used to the efficient effectiveness of skippy. I have baby salmon, mullet, trout, squid, pillies and none come close to a piece of skippy (skin with 10 - 15mm flesh) that has been frozen just the once. Thumbnail sized piece of belly flap for tarakihi. My burley (at least 50% skippy) is in high demand around here - have to really ration it amongst pals.

Interesting that there are no Albs or skips being caught close in this year. With the water temps the way they are it should be thick with them.

and over this (east) side only very thinly scattered miniature skippies - good for burley only. Never seen the like before.

Out yesterday went out towards Gannet for a change stopped in 52m biined up easily in a couple of hrs no Gurnard Snappa all 35 to 60cm. Went for a troll came across 2 Marlin at 90m went interested in our lures. They would would swim off and then pop up again There were a few skippys about so guessing they had already been feeding. Was like a game of Cat and mouse following them around. Brought home a few skippys for the freezer, had 13 by the end of the trip.             A good day out.

Hey Muzz .... good sized skippies? spent all day yesterday out towards Mayor Island for a dozen mini skips. Still smarting over the near $400 in fuel I spent on my Raglan trip with no (skippy) result. Snapper city in the harbor here - always is from 2nd week of Feb thru to early May. At night in a meter of water it's not really fishing - more like a harvest.

Most them were pretty small, like in the shops but still $12.00 each . Need to get some more to carry me over. Will probably have another go next week.   A Snapper fishin the morning then go for a troll. A mate of mine was out there and he said there were schools of them around Gannet island. From 40m out . A small jet head lure purple red and black worked the best.

Went out this morning. Missed the tip over by a few minutes but great to see one boat take on the role of retrieving the boat and a large crew involved in the salvage operation. We shot out to 36m. Straight into them but only small.   Heard a splash and turned to see what we estimated to be 110 - 120kg stripey do 5 - 6 massive leaps out of water and only 20m from boat.   Out to 51m we went. Slow to start and constantly plagued by kahawai so plenty of tangles.   Must have caught 50+ throughout the day.   Highlight of day was a 17 1/2 pounder (77cm) by the brother in law - a Raglan virgin.    Ended with 20 in bin.    Next largest was just under 9lb and a couple more around 6.   Rest were good eating size of around 36 - 40cm. Another awesome day out on the water with Raglan delivering once again

With a good weather window today for the west coast, Juri and  drove out to Raglan, not many boats at the ramp which made for a stress free bar crossing and trip out to Gannet rock early this morning to target king fish,
Jigged around the pins for an hour but nothing doing for us. We anchored at around 60 m just north of Gannet and managed some good snapper and a few nice Gurnard. Most fish around the 50 cm mark but we got a couple of 60 cm jobs. The gurnard were  good sized and all the fish in great condition. WE kept enough fish for friends and got back to the ramp by 12-30. A very mild autumn morning, pleasant day off work.

Very calm conditions especially later in the morning.

Shot out yesterday from Manu Bay. Headed left to see if we could find anything in the shallows. Not much happening so after an hour we headed west to the 53m mark.   Into them fairly quickly.    Pattern went like... 1 snapper, 5 kahawai, 1 snapper, 5 kahawai, 1 gurnard, 5 kahawai.   Had enough of kahawai so thought we'd move in to the 48m mark for the last hour. Got nothing but kahawai.   Kept 8 for the smoker for a few mates but must have let at least 50 - 60 of them go. Those kahawai keep you on your toes especially with two on at once.   All the characteristics of a big snapper - fighting all the way to the boat.    Great sport fishing and just good to be out again.   Largest snapper went just under 9lb but plenty in the 45 - 50cm range so nice eating size. Glassed off at 1pm making for an easy trip home.

Out yesterday a bit choppy in the morning going out bar was flat and the joggles was behaving itself.  Straight out to 50m fishing was slow.  Caught some good sized Gurnard and nice Snapper up to 12lbs, 1 king 84cm and a few Ky a couple of small trevally were caught and let go. Had a few cut offs from baracoutta and 1 decent shark caught and released. Wind and sea dropped a little making it a nice ride back in the afternoon. Kingi and Ky are heading to the off set smoker.

Shot out of Manu Bay yesterday.   Launched at 6.30am with around 5 - 6 empty trailers already in the park.   Swell Map was probably spot on - said there would be a 60cm chop and there definitely was.    Wasn't too bad though.

Decided to settle on the 48m mark.  No sign on bottom but thought we'd give it a whirl and if no luck, then head to the 55m mark.  At 7.30am and with only 1 in the bin, the call was made that if nothing more by 8am then we would head deeper.   The fish must have heard us as a nice stream started to come in.  Fishing never really slowed and we left them biting.

Managed to avoid the sharks with only 2 all day and no barracouta.  Also light on the Kahawai front with only 3 caught.  Came home with limit of snaps and a few carrots.  Didn't matter what bait was used as they were hungry.    Got 6 in the 50 - 55cm range and the rest in the 40 - 45cm rang.  Also caught quite a few of around 25 - 30cm which you don't tend to get out west so these went back down.

Sounder showed good sign when we started up to come in and saw more sign at 45m so I reckon you'll do well at most depths.   Sea calmed off closer in but was still a little lumpy out wide.

Back at ramp by 11am.  Approx 25 trailers at Manu and similar in town.    Great to eat fresh fish again and nice to be able to share around a few families.

Went out yesterday, 53m  Caught a mixed bag Trevally, Ky Snapper and Gurnard. Gurnard saved our day or it would of been very quite. Snapper were a good size but we only managed to 6. All the gurnard were a good size caught 14 of them so cant complain.  A few Ky were caught and released fishing was quite slow or this time of the year. Sea wasnt the best in the morning  wind dropped after lunch time made for a quicker trip back in.
