We went out last Friday, not much swell on the bar, out to 45, and worked our way out to 55m Most places we stopped we caught fish but it was fairly slow. Two reasonable snapper and eight good sized Gurnard, poor for us (we normally don't keep many)
Tried the drogue out for the first time, impressive how it can slow a 7 m boat down to a crawl! We normally stop and anchor and wait which seems to be the best way to fish at Raglan but opted to drift fish, possibly why we didn't do as well as expected. Last trip out there we binned up drifting with sliders. It was great to get out again in near perfect conditions.

Were you fishing lures while drifting or bait? or both?
We were in sub 20m, just dropped anchor and fished bait on ledger/dropper rigs.
Tried slow jigging for a little bit while at anchor(sometimes works) but no takers this time. Would have tried lures a bit more as prefer that sort of fishing but weather was iffy early on then the fish came on, weather came right and didn't really think about pulling the pick when it was chaos for about 2 hours.

Went over the bar today, first time crossing on the outgoing and seeing how much worse the joggle zone is than the incoming in similar size swell. Bar itself was ok. Once outside, very flat and pleasant.
Got 16 pannie snapper 30-42cm, 1 kahawai and plenty of sharks of all sizes. On some foul in 24m off Karaoi.

Nice one Catchem. Must have been nice out there. I tortured myself by taking the family to the beach as that's about all we can do up here. Swell was the smallest I have ever seen a West Coast beach. Depressing really
Why choose either diving or fishing when you can do both. Besides crayfish tail is very good bait!!

that Raglan juggle!!! Even on a calm day can keep you on your toes when crossing.

Shot out of Manu Bay Saturday morning. Thought we would delay the trip by an hour or two to miss the queues but still managed to park ramp side of toilet block so not as busy as thought.   The short swell and chop meant for a lumpy trip out - taking a couple of spine tinglers before we anchored up at the 58m mark,. First bait and a nice 5kg model.   Was not what I would call hot fishing but a nice stream of real good sized pannies coming on board along with a couple of slightly larger models.   Did not manage anything bigger than the first fish which was a bit of a blessing come filleting time.   A Raglan virgin christened and introduced to good old west coast fishing. Lost a couple of really nice fish when the line between main trace and hook parted ways on 2 different brand new Black Magic snapper flashes. One after a good 5 minute battle with something that my mate was just starting to win the battle with.   Other fish caught were 1 gurnard and 3 kahawai and 1 x barracouta which was used as bait.   Sea flattened off as day went on.   $30 of bait and $51 of fuel used so a pretty economical trip when split 4 ways.

Hope to be out on a charter next week from Kawhia.
We had a guy, last year, who had 2 hooks, on different Black Magic flasher rigs, break on the shank. An odd place for a hook to break.
