A pea-souper at 7am this morning, bar flat but a bit of a washing machine out at 30-40 with plagues of kahawai.

Headed in close and the wind died and it became glassy about midday, and picked up some nice 16lb snaps and a selection of other keepers. Big fish liked whole pilchard on the straylines.

Out across the Bar last Friday early in the morning, fog at entrance so had to use the GPS track to align markers. Swell was still 2-3m so went out to 40m. No drift so didn't drop the anchor, fish were plentiful but the snapper fairly small. Kept a couple 3 -4 kg range for the pot. My mate was sick so pulled the pin about midday, with the swell still around decided to cross the bar before low tide. Nice sunny day, great to be out on the west coast !!

Went out from Manu today. Was pretty quiet there. Was a bit choppy so started at 20 then out to 35. Came in to 33m and drifted in some workups of Gannets and kahawai. Was a quiet day by Raglan standards but ended up with 9 snapper and kept a few kahawai.
Highlight was my boy catching his PB under the Gannets.
A 7 kg model.

Hit the 50m mark this afternoon was slow going for the first hour, contemplated moving out deeper. Then we started to get a few bites caught a barracouta but it was no match for the 100lb trace. Biggest Snapper went 8.8kg 77cm long. Caught a few more to fill the bin and headed home early. Only caught one Gurnard.       11kg of fillets 34.6km and 13.3lts and the flattest sea I have seen out there.
WEST IS Best

Nice effort mate. Thats a good haul. Heading out tomorrow looking forward to it.
Why choose either diving or fishing when you can do both. Besides crayfish tail is very good bait!!

Good luck flat as a pancake with a gentle swell to cruise down on the way home.

Tuesday morning out across an almost flat bar to the 45m mark. Some good fish on the sounder, caught half a dozen solid fish of about 4 kg on sliders ( first time I've ever tried them on the west coast) Lost two more very solid fish, trace and complete lures bitten through it appears. Replaced the lost gear with the good old flasher rigs on heavy traces and caught a few more smaller fish which we released. Bite time was about 10-30 to 11-00 and then it went quiet. Fish still on sounder but no takes. We moved out to 50m for some time but no joy. Back in and tried 35m but nothing. Back to ramp by 2-00 washed the boat and home. Pretty pleasant day out, some reports of good fishing at 60m.

Flat calm and cloud had burnt off

Typical of the fish we caught but a few larger ones caught as well

Only a small number of boats out today, despite the swell being only 1m. Every boat we talked to got their limit of snapper. We got ours in 2.5hrs on some foul in 24 metres- schoolies 30-40cm only but happy with that. Other boats went to 50m and got larger ones.

Breeze was onshore but only a steady 10knts, was not calm but have been out there in far worse.

Water was quite blue and nudging 20C on our sounder which tends to read on the low side.

You did well, we were looking at Sunday but my swell map said 16 knots so we gave it a miss. In the afternoon back at Hamilton it seemed a lot calmer so I'm guessing we made the wrong choice Cry

Ive been wanting to cross the Raglan bar for some time, so next March Im going to give it a crack in the RIB. Of course will try to get some local knowledge first and hopefully somebody experienced to follow or crew with.

Any majors or tips to watch out for with the channel and the bar itself?

Just launch at Manu Bay no bar to cross, pick a good day when the swell is down. I use swell map and wait till its a meter or less. With crossing the bar you have to get through the Joggle first, and have heard it can be worse than crossing the bar.            A couple of boats got turned over a couple of weeks ago crossing the bar on a good day crossed on low tide and found some big waves.
