Just having a wonder what everyone out there is using for lighter stickbaiting? Have been doing a bit of stickbaiting in the harbour here. The only issue is that most of the fish are under about 10kilo and on 100lb jerry brown it makes it a little bit of a one sided affair. I have been thinking of kitting out a lighter setup. just wondering whats out there and in what kind of price range. I have my eyes on a synit 8ft 2 x13. But that might be something to think about next year after a bit more saving. I had been looking around and stumbled across the Okuma braid concepts 10-15 kilo, 7ft 6 rod. Although this is a still softbait rod wondering if anyone has used it for throwing around smaller stickbaits. In the 40-70gram range. Probably gonna get a 5-600 reel for it. Maybe an Okuma salina 3 5000 high speed as the 16000 I have has been wicked. ------------- TAS - Its a real disease |

Jono, I sent a Van Diemen X13 back with Kelly today.... I'm sure she will let you have use of it... I even bolted a Stella SW5000 with PE3 on it for her until she gets a reel sorted out.... Aaron has those reels for you as well... ------------- www.synit.co.nz |

I was thinking of the okuma braid concept rod as well.......the one that joins above the grip....I had one before and the build quality was very good.....fuji guides. ------------- Once the idiots turn up..Im outta here...No time for Drama Queens. |

I have used all the below casting rods and if you are looking for a quality light weight stickbait rod which works the lighter stickbaits well and is not just a rod that loads up well or looks pretty then look no further than the list below! It will be well worth saving up for one of them. They will all work stickbaits from 60g -100g well! Running PE3 when throwing stickbaits over $100+ is a gamble that I wouldn't personally take, and if a 15Kg plus fish does come along it could end up in tears for you especially if your in reefy terain. I tried this a few years ago at Shearer Rock in AKl and my 75g Gamma got smoked and is now jewlery for some Kingfish out there  If your using $50 stickbaits I guess it's not so much of an issue but still a risk But don't let me stop you from giving it a go...... I am using a Smith gtk 74 with a saltiga 4000h currently, we have some huge sessions on longtail tuna ranging from 8-20kg and this combo gets an absolute smoking, really happy with weight, distance and power, 40-70g lures mostly. I have found the slightly shorter rod easier to manoeuvre in the boat also as I often fish alone. We have to get the tuna into the boat pretty quick as the sharks are prolific during the tuna season so is a good test bench for gear. Also a big fan of the Synit product :)

There is the shimano ocea stickbait rod 30-50 pound and also the shimano revolution 10-24 kg stickbait rod .......The later represents good value i reckon and has a great action.......see both on here......

| Rod and reel in Newmarket have some Yamaga Blanks ( rods ) blue sniper I think , the light one is very nice ( pe3 I think )well worth checking out and really good pricing for a top Japanese stickbait rod . |

Hmmmmmm Someone in NZ stocking Yamaga blanks.... Now there is a thing. will have to have a look. Having said that, I do not really get this light stick baiting malarky...... Whats the point? To me stickbaiting is targeting bigger fish, and thats where the higher end rods come in handy for their action and power. If you are casting small stickbaits short distances on lighter string you could probably use just about any casting rod, so long as it was a bit softer to avoid tumbling the lil bait. I have a few 60gm and smaller baits and hardly ever use them, cast distance is ****, specially in the wind. THey make less noise in the water and .......... I dunno. Stickbaiting is PE5 or 6 and 90gm plus, thats where the fun is. Also be damned if I am casting expensive baits out on anything under PE5, one windknot or wrap on the guide and there goes yer nice bait. ------------- I always tell the truth about things that never happened |

I wouldnt go under 50 pound braid either simon.........I have a sw6000 with the ocea revolution 10-24kg above(just bought) has 50 pound braid(breaks at 78 but thickness of pe 3.5)......will cast 60-170 and can handle 8-10 kg of drag.........will be using that when i go out with my mate in auckland for targeting fish 8-15 kg ish.......my topshot lalandi and sw 10,000 would be over kill ! ------------- Once the idiots turn up..Im outta here...No time for Drama Queens. |

Yes my main reason or going lighter was only for accomodating lighter fish. Skull dragging smaller harbour fish on 100b jb just lost a bit of its fun. Even though the surface strike is still cool. Once they are hooked its a bit of a 1 sided affair. ------------- TAS - Its a real disease |

I,m in the Jono camp. I use my lightest stick bait rod more than anything else, primarily cause I flick a lure most nights from the shore, and there is not much excitement in snagging small GT's with an elephant gun. The local longfin tuna get upto about 12-15 kilo, which are perfect for a 30-90 gramm rod with 30lb braid. ------------- "I love standing by the ocean and just knowing what its for" |

No arguments there Titahi or jono really. Match your tackle to the target, its more fun that way. It just that there has been talk of using PE2 or PE3 etc for stickbaiting here. for Kings. I am afraid I cant see that point, what are you targeting? Big Kahawhai? If you are over safe bottom and can play the fish out then use whatever you like. But the high end stickbaiting specific rods, will only really come into their own with the more finickity floating baits thats have to be worked 'just so' to get the best from them, and yet get a reasonable cast yardy yardy yardy....
