Hey guys,

I cant find if this has been covered somewhere.

I am after a starting point for stickbaits. I have just scored a very light stickbait set up. 20-30lb rod with a 5000 size reel and 30lb braid.

I know carpenter and RAL are the best and entice the bite when the fishing is hard but whats a good, cheap, light weight stickbait to start off with. Im gonna start with a couple of stickbaits around $30 mark to get in the swing of casting and retrieving.

Im thinking maybe a waxwing and a starwalker, or maybe a new Black Magic stickbait. Shimano orca maybe?

Where should I start? What colour's are best?
Fishing in Hauraki around bouys and the like.

Thanks in advance

kahawai or Kohuru Starwalker would be my choice of $30 options. Then when you get serious....

Agree with structfab....even though he stole both of those orions off trade me recentlyLOL
I liked the shimano ocea pencils(rattles too) black/silver(supposed to be fished with 3/0 trebs but i prefered 7/0 inline singles)....the orcas are supposed to be good .....you can use 7/0 inlines with starwalker too and 9mm split rings.......very easy to swim.....nice zig zag action.....havent heard great things about waxwings(double hook pose problems).
Both of these baits pause and point their nose to the sky.......only then should you sweep and with a little bit of slack line and i say a little bit.....you dont want it tight as when you sweep, it could skittle across the surface(esp if too much force on the sweep)......you want it to dive.....make a smooth even big sweep of the rod....reel in the slack and wait for bait to point its nose before sweeping again.....dont be in a rush to do next sweep as this is often when mr king will strike....ambush!.....thats what i have  found anyway......Good luckWink

I'm a complete beginner and only have a couple of stickbaits.  After advice here I bought starwalkers and they seem pretty good to me.  I was out this morning practising and was thinking how well it was swimming, without any input from me apart from winding the reel.

Maria loaded is also a nice, easy to swim smaller stick bait
