Fishmad ... sorry to hear about the truck and I am glad your wive was not hurt. That said, a smart, devious man would know how to turn this misfortune to his advantage and have many, many nag-free fishing trips.

If you need lessons, PM Fishful Thinking. He's our resident expert in spousal disinformation.

Had whitebait for lunch on friday. Dang they're tasty things. That and the leventy leven bottles of savvy blanc.

the scene: 6am tarawera river...glassy calm....incoming tide....two intrepid men staring intently into the river vainly searching for white gold.

well vainly searching was about it for me but i did have the pleasure of sharing one of my spots with "uncle" (the scooper trooper)

im afraid to say i was out shone by this man from tauranga, who ended up with only a taste but was a taste more than i got.

hope you had a good morning uncle.....was great to meet you at last!

Aye, it was good morning dunnit.

Many thanks for sharing one of your "secret" spots. ( & for the cookies kindly supplied by your wife)

Not much to show for our efforts but I'll manage to stretch that lot out to a few fritters.

Aunty stayed in bed so she's not gettin' any

I had a chat to one of the guys on the other side before driving home.

They didn't get any either so it wasn't our fault!

Great to meet another forum member & I shall return

Below is a pic of dunnit, ready for action.

I loaned him my forum beanie, just for the occasion.

stinkers are the silver belly ones that smell like cucumber, the die quickly in the bucket........some people like them but personally not for me.   they also lead the whitebait out past the net and make things very hard.

We had 73mm of rain Sunday night so all the streams around here are dirty.

With a bit of luck, that could get things started when the mud dissapears

From what I've heard, this would be the worst season around here for yonks.

Maybe all the 'bait headed south to where they are having the best season in yonks

Date Posted: 05 Oct 2005 at 11:40am

well my waters were right!

4lb of beautiful clear bait this morning...i think tomorrow will be the same before the run tails off.

back to work tonight (6pm-6am)...so no more baiting till the weekend when you gotta be up before sparrows to get a posse.

get out there uncle times a wasting.....you can tie flys any time but the bait won't wait

hey Dunnit,

Its Whitey.  Sorry about my ignorance but what fish are you referring to as Whitebait?  Is it Smelt?  My buddies and i used to ice-fish for smelt on Lake Champlain in Vermont.  We used to fill a garbage can per trip.  Then straight into the fryer.  Good stuff!

Whitey

Date Posted: 22 Oct 2005 at 12:23pm
similar to smelt.....whitebait are made up of several species of the galaxid family....about an inch and a half long....season lasts for 4 months.....the adults grow to about 4 inches then spawn on reeds near the river mouth..the fry swim out to sea for several months then return to the river to grow to maturity, thats when we catch them

When we were kids catching sprats we would get the occasional 'bycatch' of fish we called cucumber fish. My mate reckoned they were smelt. Is that what they are? These things were about 4 inches long, brown backs and sort of see through bodies.
