Hey,

Looking at picking up a little Avet SXJ to replace / augment my Daiwa Luna for light jigging, slow jigging / whatevering etc.

I tend to cast my Luna quite a lot and would cast the Avet a fair bit as well, so question is, whats the MC cast control like on the avets? I see that the non MC versions have mechanical breaking, but does this compare to the MC versions for backlash control?

And while I'm here, are the two speeds worth it?

Hi

FWIW I am a shore fisherman.

I can cast the LX to around 80 Mtrs and the MXL to 100 ish depending on bait and wind.

I spent Sat night in WGTN harbor on Oriental Bay casting bait into a brisk wind got up to ~60 kilometre gusts at 11pm when I left
Not a single nest with the control on. Initially set it to 5 but backed it off to 3 for most of the night

I like the Avet range immensely and would certainly encourage you to look at buying one.
As far as I know the prices are going up state side so probably this will be reflected here soon.

I have a bunch of reels I got before the price increase, I'm still offing those reels at last years prices, but by next month the price will be going up.

Also the price increase is only on the single speed reels. All 2 speed, raptor and game reels remain the same price.

The sx is a great little reel.
They have improved the bearings over the past year or two, since the magcast upgrade i believe.. ive slayed some nice fish on mine with no issues what so ever.
Value for money they are very hard to beat..imo

Fished it in anger for the first time on Sat night, just on some panny snaps which it handled without breaking a sweat. Nicely balanced reel. Clicker is stiff as anything to get on. Will loosen with time I'm sure. I'm used to a round bait caster, so the avet feels about right in the hand. Just a little bit different with the different handle types. Looking forward to testing it on some bigger fish.

Kings to 15kgs no probs. They will take any snapper alive with ease..

Here are the issues I have with my Avet reel...

1.  I have the drag set under the recommended maximum but it creates very stiff resistance when the winding handle (from spool tension presumably). Not ideal for long periods jigging at all.

2.   Even with this high spool tension Freespool is so loose, over runs are easy.

3.  There is almost no perceptible difference between Freespool and Bait. (Would've been a great feature.)

4.   There is no gradual drag range. Ie, once just out of Freespool, the drag is near full on.

just some things to be aware of. Great price and service from Cam though.

I have a full range of Avet reels and I never had this problem when fishing the recommended line weights. SX is 10 to 25 pound and MX is 15 to 30 Pound JX and LX is 20 to 40 Pound and HX is 30 to 60 Pounds.
The bait feature is not to slow the spool down it's purely engaging the drag. As far as over runs, maybe use your thumb or get MC version witch will eliminate this problem all together.
by the sounds of it maybe you have your drag set to high, if you have no gradual drag range, to me it sounds like it is set to high.

I hope this helps, have you thought about sending it back to Cam to see if there is an issue he always given me great service and i'm sure he would like to see if the reel is the problem. Is it still under warranty?

Best,

J.

I got the MC version. I've been casting it, and havent had any spool over runs. Free spool is very smooth, smoother running than my dedicated baitcaster (Daiwa Luna). The Avet is a nice little reel. Only hassle I have with mine is that the clicker is incredibly tight to engage, to the point its hard with wet fingers. Hopefully it will loosen up with use / innox.
