Am going to launch into a bit of mechanical jigging this summer. Have a few trips planned up to D'Urville Island and also up to the Coromandel and Auckland. The guys in H&F in Christchurch recommended this combo but after others thoughts. I am looking for something in overhead around that 200-300gm range, dont want to be heaving massive jigs around, will be fishing in around the 50-70m mark from what i have been told. A lot of talk about other brands on here but very hard to pick the best of so many comments. I have a budget of around a grand. We are not fortunate enough to have heaps of retailers down here with heaps of knowledge on jigging so let me have it. Am heading away mid Jan for the first trip so need to be sorted by then. | For that budget you will get a decent set up. The Trini is a nice enough reel but only rated 11kg max drag. For the same money you could pick up a sweet little BX500N or Everol jigger. Rods, go for 250g. JM terminator or JM Ocean Devil offer good value for money. Check out the Sponsors on this forum (De Coro, YeeHaa, Go Fish) they will see you right! |

another option is the quite popular saltist 30t and monstermesh max 300g rod, doesnt break the bank to much so you will hav some left over cash to go and buy some jigs! (300g purple zest curved slider and a 300g white jm alien are my favourites!) ------------- Fresh waters for drinking, Saltwaters for fishing. |

accurate bx400xn with JM ocean devil/ jigstar 250g with pe4 braid. light set that has plenty of balls and lots of fun. or go the bx500xn if you want to go pe5 managed kings to 19kg without issue with similar set up for under $1000 |

Take a close look at the new Jig Star Ninja L rod. It is perfect for that jig range and is a top shelf performer for modest price $440. ------------- give it death! |

Second this, have been having a blast with mine. top shelf piece of kit, very nice action and plenty of lift. a bit more and the Katana is even more special. And I though Zest/ ChrisW were the sponsors of the HMJF forum?

Thanks for the comments guys, will do a bit of investigation into jigstar and jm rods i think. Am i correct in thinking that a good rod paired with a capable reel is better than a good reel and a not so flash rod? I am a bit of a shimano man, mainly due to the H&F shop, however it seems from similar threads to this that other brands have it over them for value for money when it comes to jigging reels? |

tthe accurate reels are pretty bulletproof and twin drag and nice and light. jigging is pretty hard on the reel so best to buy once and be happy. I wouldn't skimp on any part as its usually the weakest link that fails |

Not true, Shimano Ocea Jiggers and trini 40n etc are fantastic reels and have been proven time and time again, down side to them is they are a large reel best suited to 350g and up and the smaller models are not brought in to NZ and reserved for the Japanese market only unfortunately. Dual drag is not essential as long as its a star drag but in a lever drag reel its required in the heavier setups say 300g and above, mainly because a single drag set up suffers more seriously from bearing bind, this is just the nature of a lever drag over a star. Jigging is a trendy style sport, its doesn't take long to look through this forum over a period of the last 4 years to see people recommending 1 brand now have caught big fish on others as well. TBH it's not the one off catches you should look at but more the continued use of them. most damage to the higher end reels comes more from the action of jigging rather than destruction on a fish. |

I think in the 120g - 200g weight the accurates, pe3-4 etc have it over shimano or daiwa. The smaller ojs and saltigas lack serious drag with a limit of around 10kg, although you probably wont need to much more on a 1- 200g rod. Like hookapuka said 350g up the ojs, torsas and large trinis maybe a good option. i really like the look of the new accurates, compact twin drags and pretty much bulletproof and great value for your dollar. ------------- Synit Prototype bender |
