I'm looking at getting a new rod for this reel and just wanting advice on what's good and what's in not so good. I think I will need to get two rods as I need one for fishing off a boat which will be 6-7ft 10-15kg range and the other rod needs to be about 9ft also 10-15kg for throwing poppers and maybe a bit of live baiting from shore just so I can flick it out a bit easier with the extra length.

Budget? I'm pretty sure you can find something suitable for both applications...

A lot of anglers like Smith rods for the lighter stuff, personally I'd look into the Van Diemen range offered by Synit.

Exactly what I was going to say sam. Vandemon x35 from synit mate. We have been flicking the x46 and if thats anything to go by the new x35 will be a match in heaven for your 5k

I'm using a jigstar 120 with my 4000 and love it… awesome fun on bluenose/puka/albies/snaps. Although it looks like a kids wharf set its rapidly becoming my little go to combo on the boat

Have you used one of those rods Keeza?
Davo, what is the length of your Jigstar rod?

im not home at the mo but from memory its about 5'4" so it's quite short…but super parabolic and fun on chunky fish. It really does look like a kiddies wharf set and I've mates tease me about it until they see it load up with decent fish!

Yeah, thought it was a short rod. Not sure if I should get a mass produced rod or not, but, at the same this stage I am not wanting to spend almost as much as the reel cost on a rod. I've have not used any Shimano rods before.. Looking at the Shimano Jungle Stix & Terez rods atm. Any Daiwa 10-15kg rods you guys know of?

Thanks, will have look now.
I know there were some 6ft6 Daiwa Monster Mesh 10-15kg or PE 1-2 rods (older model) If only they had made a lighter rating in the new MMX.

I have a 7ft Terez 50lb, run a thunnus on it for livebaiting and straylining. Nice heavy duty rod, often slow jig with it when we want more jig colors in the rotation.

I want to use the rod for all general fishing aswel as catching smallish kingfish. 50lb I think is a bit too much for snaps and KY

Sorry maybe he still has! Think it was a 30-50lb rod.

Hey mate..yeah I got one of those I use for live baiting with an 8000 size baitrunner..

I think that listing on MD is a bit misleading. Its the older model Monster Mesh not the newer 'Max' version which I think are the blue/white ones. As a live bait set up its awesome and I have jigged with it a few times off a kayak, I don't know much about jigging but it handled 160-200gm jigs better. Its not as parabolic compared to the likes of jigstar 120 or jigging master ultra light and slightly longer. It loads up quicker through the midsection and has a bit more grunt/lifting power than the others I've just mentioned. Theres no way id consider using it for inchiku jigs as its way too stiff but then again I'm only fishing in 20-30m.

For livebaiting and bait/straylining its ideal being a bit longer than the newer style jig rods..and as a plus its got fuji Sic guides compared to the newer models. I have noticed them under $200 on MD when they have there specials a couple of times..

Hope this helps..

Yeah, i thought the same thing when I saw it on their site.
Do you think it's too much for big snaps and KY? As I want to use it for all types of fishing so I'm not taking three different rods out when I go fishing :-)

Yeah id say its a bit overkill for snaps or ky unless you wanna skull drag them up...that gofish one may be a different model. I'll check the model number on mine and let you know..if its lighter it may be a better option for you..

Th sabre game or ocean devils would be my pick , ocean devil looks a real good priced bomb proof stickbait rod , the sabre game an allround, light jigging ,light livebaiting .Why not look out for a jigging master terminator - probably the lightest one ?

Posted By: Fishthat
Date Posted: 02 Dec 2013 at 11:02am
Hey Legacy, looked up that rod and the lightest one I could find is PE 1.5-4?

Posted By: Legacy
Date Posted: 02 Dec 2013 at 11:07am
thats what I'd get and put pe3 on the 5000, had a similar combo but with a synit , caught big snapper / small kingis beautifully. Jigging and bait fishing usually about the 50 m range . Then aim to get one of those JM stickbait rods Big smile

The Sabre game is PE 1-3 so isn't that the lighter rod?

ocean devil ul or jigstar 120

The Jigstar 120 seems pretty good for the low price tag.

The terminator has a lot more backbone when its needed found the sabre a bit soft .

My only concern with the PE 1.5-4 is that'll be a bit overkill for KY and snaps compared to the PE 1-3? I've never jigged before either.

a stella 5000 is overkill on Kahawai and snapper anyway.

For snaps and kahawai I use 6lb braid on 2500 size reel and 4kg rods. I have a accurate bx400xn with a jigging master power spell 100g pe 1-3 and find that overkill for most snaps but the biggest. But great fun on kings

Yeah, you have a point there mate. I think I may need to have another combo or rod for snaps and KY and just use the stella with a JM then save up for the stick bait rod.

Yeah, once I get the rod I'll need to start looking for a charter boat to go out on so I can attempt to get my first Kingfish! Any suggestions on which charter? I'm based in Tauranga.
