Like the mention of that Yellowfin word. Any more details on that Steve and did they get it to the boat etc?

Apparently Warren McIntyre on Senator hooked up to what he suspects was a Yellowfin in rough conditions on the way up from Whangarei. Warren has a huge amount of experience and wouldnt have called it for a fin unless he was pretty certain. Plenty of boats out for a look today.

well was out yesterday water was 20* blue as can be and clean with the odd jelly belly got some very nice skippies, saw sun fish, flying fish and saw my 1st marlin this season, have caught a few so tend to know what they look like. word is the place is also heaving with sharks of all sorts and sizes which is a good thing and a right prik if your using baits, I can see with the amount about many will be towing lures to avoid them. out again this weekend soley to tow a lure or two so fingers crossed.

Heading up next weekend with Andy K. The idea was aim for a Marlin but it is whether weather allows it. Where would be a good place to start? Will have a few lures to troll but thought would try get a take on a skippy or a jack mac? Is it best to travel along at trolling speed through a huge area or just go to where the birds are working? Only in a Senator 540 so would be purely harness stand up on some 50 wide sealines and 20k stella and 18k saragosa

People need to stop jumping to conclusions until they hear the full story. Yes if both fish had come to the boat alive and been kept then there was reason for complaints. But when the second comes up dead there is not much you can do, and I am sure none of it will go to waste.

Ha funny thing was I did not see another boat big or small all day, where I was, great life in that area with huge gannet work ups and lots of mutton birds wheeling around, oil slicks from fish feeding, looked so good I spent around 5 hours working small area and got results, also the forecast was rubbish, as for conditions - I did not have more than 10 knots of wind all day, 2 -3 mtr East swell was very fishable on any boat, sometimes you just have to get off the computer and go fishing! you can't catch them at the dock.Use your eyes and nose for the signs of food chain, fish your gut instinct, not electronic garbage, marlin don't know what an SST chart is FFS.
Anyway see some of you out there today, 120m Whangaroa entrance over western end of Stevies, good luck to all, cheers swordfishsteve

From the NZ Sportfishing Council FB Page .... makes interesting reading ..... Busy time at the Whangaroa Sport Fishing Club today – here’s a Report from Sandra Moore, Whangaroa’s Recorder, received at 8.35 pm tonight
“Phew - went down to watch 2 fish being weighed on the weigh-station and ended up there for hours and come back up to the office with 8 weigh-sheets. I have been listening on Ch 62 all day and it was firing out there, so much so that I couldn't keep track of who had what! Double hook-ups, drops, tags, boatings......... it was all going on. Anyway across the weigh-station we had Leilani with 3 stripeys today all from off the Cavallis on lures, Julie Utting on Shasa had a stripy of 132.1kg also from the Cavallis on a lure, Mikhail Cowan on Sabra with a stripy of 108.9kg with a live bait off the Cavallis (he also had a blue marlin of 191kg yesterday at the Nine Pin Trench) and a non-member aboard Foxy Lady with a horse of a stripy at 148.3kg, also on a live bait (sorry - location unknown!), Good news as well is that we are seeing mahimahi in good numbers with several boats into shoals of them and with some weighed in by Kallista caught on lumo lures at the Poor Knights. Where the mahimahi are we usually have the blue marlin - so watch this space - it bodes well for our One Base Contest which starts this Saturday. Oops, nearly forgot to tell you about the yellowfin tuna that was caught by Tangalooma but it's tail got bitten off by a shark on the way to the boat, but it still weighed in at just over 60kg!”

FROm NZ Sportsfishing Council FB Site
Following is a report from Sandra Moore of the Whangaroa Sport Fishing Club in respect of the first day of their One Base – Saturday 8th Feb:-
Considering the weather on Thursday and Friday we were very happy to have 56 boats registered and 177 anglers. Sea conditions were not too bad, and there was fishing action, mainly a late morning bite. The catches were all in grid square Bryce Sims Electrical 4 (off Cavallis) and we had 3 striped marlin tagged and released, and the first marlin landed by Hamish Buick aboard Centrefold, which weighed in at 119.2kg, caught on a live skipjack bait. We also had 3 shark tagged & released and 3 mahimahi landed. The heaviest mahimahi was 4.34kg, not huge, but a good effort seeing as it was landed on 3kg line by Campbell Rathe aboard Brenda L. Sea conditions will be getting better and better over the next few days so we expect heaps of action to come.

Does anyone have an update?
Day 1: 4 marlin(2 for Centrefold)
Day 2: Was there a single marlin?
Day 3: Was it only the 2(Centrefold and Marlin Blue)?
If the above is right then...
56 boats, 3 days = 168 boat days trolling for 6 fish or 28days trolling per fish.
Can all change, guess it can only get better
