Well decided to give it a go........................

Beautiful day - left ramp after rugby - quick jig at North reef - no good, so out came the plastic.

Towed small lures and skippy lures over the kumara patch for a couple of hours
, 1 sunfish seen - no strikes.

Best water temp 18.2.

Hopefully back out in a couple of weeks.

Thanks Al
Sorry been a tad busy to jump on line. Two traces rubbed up just above the hook. One also oval (squashed). Didn't see either fish. One was a fairly long run but fell off as soon as drag increasedCry. Collected 38 Skippie's solo too so bait sorted for the next 12 months. Fished North out as far as 300m Early finish (14:30) as wind got up 20+.

Great effort, pitty about the Outboard fail. Guess that means that Turtle didn't get out either then. Rumors of 2 seen yesterday off oceans/ back of chicks in around 150ish but they are rumors and not from a well regarded source.

left Marsden Cove at 10 yesterday morning late start, off oceans 130m had work up with dolphins and gannets picked up a big skippie ,couple of loops did not see anything else ,carried on 150m few skippies up on the surface again played around did not see anything else, out to 180m another big skippie out to 220m headed north and then headed in lost a nice albocore by the boat in 100m , had 19.5 temp almost everywhere did not see any marlin but my 10 year old nephew had a great day on skippies and the albert on light gear.

Fished North of the Knights yesterday, best temp 20.7. 3 skippies, 1 albert. Had a small stripey in the gear, had a crack at a few of our lures, but didnt stick. Nice day out on the water!

Went out Saturday. Cruised 120 to 240. Got Albert's and skippies randomly with the odd baitball in closer. No beakies seen. Slowed to pull in the gear, saw shark fins and accelerated again to avoid. Hooked up anyway and as my mate is a cack hander, one of his rods screamed. 20 mins later afte, he converted his 24kg to a two piece..., had it boat side hooked though its left pec. 8ft of grumpy Marko. Got the lure back and fortunately since it was pec hooked, was upsidedown, managed to cut out the hook as well. 4 new scratches on the boat though as it took out its pain during a couple of cuts. Left seemingly happy enough with all fins intact. Good day and flat waters with a bit of rain. Did on bottom drop on sign at 175m and got two spinies:-( . also saw a seiner heading towards the cape...

The water was green till bout 250m, was mint out wide. It came in on the long rigger, a lumo sprocket. Nailed it and then danced across all our other lures before taking off. Was a good scrap and lasted about 45mins where I had 3 shots on the leader. Got the last one and we gagged her. Didn't appreciate it's size at first but it was a very solid fish.
Just loaded up on gas at toots and heading out for another shot tomorrow

Yes Congrats on the firsts. Nice fish. Heard you on the RT, mutter mutter.
Our day was quiet. Did the big circle around those dark Islands. 13hours closer to the next service. 76 Nautical miles and 62ltrs = 10 skippies 0 Albacore and 0 Marlin, a couple of sunfish and flying fish. No kings on Lochland or N/reef that we could find. Water was way cooler than the other day starting at 17.4 inside the knights best was 19.5. Great temperature change from 150 - 250m and that's were most of the bait and dolphins were. The dolphins were feeding on large sauri even the gannets were struggling to get them down. I couldn't believe the difference that Southerly had made to the water temp. Only went as wide as 307 and water was at best light blue.

Date Posted: 08 Jan 2014 at 7:29am
Yep congrats Big Dog, great to hear it happening for you while out there....was certainly a struggle for us, long time to find any water that went over 18.3, covered a large amount of water, out to 400 back of the Knights, hit some pretty ugly soup so headed back in for a another look, managed to find some water up to 19deg at 220 and some skippies so we played there for a bit ending up with 10 Skippies and one Albert...

Hi KB
We did the needles to back of Mokes on Friday out to the 200m line lots of skippies very manta but no marlin seen at all average water colour too would be inclined to run up the hen and chicks side travelling north better water I believe, the southerly blew a belly in the warm contour around barrier

Marty..  Ive fished the Mokes many times... over many years...20+    80 -90% of the time there is nice blue wather in the bit either side of Little Barrier.. but its like once you get to the Mokes it goes green... and sometimes its green all the ways to to the knowls. Must be some sort of current there..

Have seen more marlin and bait off the hen an chicks than off the Mokes .

Was towing lures between moks and hen new year day saw 4 marlin about 4 -6 miles w of moks, no hookups. Out again yesterday and had a runner off chickens-dropped. Then a free jumper 2 miles nw of moks, again all action was at 21 degrees water temp. Only landed n released 6ft plus blue shark late evening. Plenty of baitball action on the sounder.

Just spent two days fishing out from Tutukaka -what a great ramp and friendly people at the Game club there. We managed to catch a few mahimahi 600m out from the cape both days and got a double strike on stripeys 205m out from mumu(I'm pretty sure thats what every one was calling the area) we got both in and tag and released both estimated around 70-80kg was the first for the boat and first marlin for me. There sure seemed to be plenty of action and hot water in the afternoons but not so much in the morning. Will certainly be back up again when we can

Time n Tide dropped its first Blue today.

This relayed from my son as I couldn’t go today.CryBroken Heart

We were heading north when it hit. First it peeled truckloads of line out to the side then tuned and swam at the boat. We pulled away at speed to get tight again but backed off the throttle too early so the fish got slack line. That happens when both of them were panicking and there isn’t a lot of line left on the spool. He said they came close to being spooled on 24 oh soooo fast.  The reel was rattling so much on the initial run that the clicker disengaged. 310m North of the Knights.

Only one other tailer, a sunfish and lots of dolphins seen. 75 Miles covered.

On inspection of the lure the heat shrink on the hook and the trace directly above are rashed.  The last meter and a bit is also white from being alongside the fish.  Reel was set just under strike. And Chris was afraid to push it up as by the time he got it in his hand the spool was down quite a way.

Great thrill for him and his mate. He was still buzzing when he got home tonight.

Please Please let the weather be good next weekend.  Looking like there are more than a few Blues about this season.

That's cool Krow.
No harm done then -got lure and nylon back and the fish is still there and healthy for next time.

There sure seemed to be plenty of action and hot water in the afternoons but not so much in the morning. Will certainly be back up again when we can

A double first up. That is very cool stuff. Well done to the team. Bet there was a fair bit of adrenalin running when you got those puppies to the boat. Not an easy way to get your first fish, but a plain old single will feel easy peasy next time.
