Hi guys, going to do a bit more jigging going forward. Got a couple kings on the weekend while we were out having a play so need a little advice. Had a couple of jigs down but we only got fish on the benthos pink/lumo. (other jig we were using was a benthos black/lumo) both 200g. What are the top most successful Jigs I should be buying? And any guidelines on when to use which?

Mate your basically asking how long a peice of string is. There is NO jig that will out perform another end on end. It comes down to many many factors.
But yes williamson, zest, jm, aj, m and w etc all come into their own on various days. Personally I prefer zest. Yes its more expensive however tthe longevity of the jig, the punishment they can take and the varieties or styles are awesome.
My most success ful colour is purple. My partners is orange. Some of my mates is pink.
If your comfortable spending a bit more get zest. Other brands I have found to fall apart quicker or snap alot easier.
When to use them? We depths, currents, style of jigging or rod your jigging with play major factors. Also I have found different areas can prefer different coloured jigs to other areas.
going back to what you said in regards to having both jigs down. Were these on the same setups etc? As in line weights and fluro or mono etc

Just take a variety of colours. Purple, pink, blue, orange are my usuals. I use cheap $7.00 jigs although they don't last as long ( paint comes off) Its just not as painful as losing a $30 to cuda or bust offs. I find no difference in hook ups between the cheapos and the top end lures...

My advice would be to get a selection of the colours as mentioned across a few different weights. Search the forum topics, there is a ton of info on depth of water vs jig weight e.t.c. I like jigs with a fair bit of action in them such as the curved sliders but also rocket jigs for a fast drop. My favorite colour would be orange. Most importantly buy more than you think you will need and then every time you go near a tackle shop get a few more..lol...well thats what I tend to do. All jokes aside, I tend to use about 6-10 different types on a trip but its nice to have 30 or so in your arsenal to choose from. Good luck!!

I see I've opened a bag of worms haha. Think I just need to work it out lol. I will use them when I can where I can but aldy pins and the structure of the mercs. We were using the pink.lumo on a o/h fin-nor with super soft jig rod and the other on a bulky spin with a stiff as jig rod. So I suppose I can really compare them Don't mind spending the cash so might invest in a few diff zest's.

Cheers mate. Whats wrong with the assists in the BA's? Too short?

broken arrow 420g to start and when you get tired you can start dropping weight down to 300g If coutta are present forget the nice fluttering jigs unless you like retying knots
orange, pink, purple, green, silver, they all work well at different times depending on what the fish are feeding on
edit, normal hooksets on bought jigs are not up to scratch when chasing big fish, ok for rats

Also depends on your depth of water too.......the jigs you mention are primarily bottom weighted....so sink quickly........if in shallow water your better off with a centre weighted jig....so it sinks slower and stays in the strike zone......those williamson vortex(they spin) can be good but are a bit hard work to jig.........curved sliders are good in that regard too. my favorites are benthos/broken arrow/river 2 sea spike/zest/jigging master aliens and rockets......cheap stuff for the snakes! The assists with broken arrows are a piece of string(last time i looked).

Ok thanks everyone! What are your thoughts on weights in diff depths? Lighter the better if you can get it down? I only have 200g jigs.

I tend to fish 400g at the start of the day as the heavier you go the faster you get down and ultimatly the more drops you can make but this also depends on your setup if your running a high speed reel such as a 6.1;1 you will fatigue very quickly with 400g jigs.
Its safe to jig 300g upto 100m but helps if someone steadys the boat or keeps it in the zone over fish so your not just jigging nothing mate.
My favourite jig would have to be 300g zest curved slider in pink for my two cents
BA's assists look like boot laces and the hooks would be better suited as paper weights.
Good luck mate but be fore warned jigs are by far the most addictive item to be buying dont let the shinynes get to you :)

Alex mate, laidbackdood has some sweet advice there boss. There is plenty on info mate. If your jigging the northern aldie pins then i would go 300 gram for sure. Thats not to say 200 gram doesnt work (hell Rick Pollicks report of the 100lb king caught about 2 weeks ago was on a 200 gram jig). It might only be 70 meters at the shallowest point but someone will need to be on the helm especially on the windier days. The fast you get down the more time the lure spends in the strike zone.
As for you comment about jigging the pinks at the aldie pins, i have read a few reports of this couloured jig doing the damage consistantly out there. Not that we go out there much any more.
Definately look to upgrade hooks mate and make your own assist rigs. If you are not sure how to do these let me know and ill post my tutorial i did on how to complete an Assist Rig.

Id usually sart off with a 200gm jig and if there are fish there and they are liking a certain colour then keep using the same colour but upsize it to a longer, bigger jig, that way it looks like a bigger bait and youll get the bigger boys attacking that oe instead of all the other rats. My way of thinking anyway. Start off with the williams 200gm benthos then when you find them move up to the ZEST 400gm long jigs in pink or yellow seem to go very well for me

How many drifts through a particular school would you guys do before changing jigs if no interest?

Alex, if the bait is balled up tight, the fish are high up in the water column and you can mark individual fish on the sounder, then the fish are feeding hard out and will take just about anything. If the bait is spread out and/or you can't mark individual fish then maybe they just aren't feeding? The sign, and how to read it is more important than jig colour or how many drifts you do.

Always match the jig weigh to water depth - 100m= 300g, 60m=200g. If the jig does not get down quickly enough, go heavier or choose a slim shape jig e.g. zest Curved Slider, JM rocket jig. Then choose your colour, a rough guide is the overhead light conditions. Bright light = bright reflective colours! dull light = dark colours. Everyone has their favourite jig colour, get all the guys to use a different jig colour and you will see which colour is best at that time.
Jig choice can also depend on whether you want a quick retrieve, then chose a slim jig that respond best at speed e.g X zest Curved Slider, zest deep slim, JM Rocket. If your technique is slow, then choose a flat side jig that will work well at a slower speed e.g. zest Hardy Long, zest curvaceous jigs.

What chris said is gospel...but I would just point out that most of the time kings ain't feeding on the bottom so in 100m a 200 is fine. The lighter the jig the easier it is.

what they said^
get a good mix of jigs aswell some cheapies and some decent zest or the likes. The cheap ones wont last long but if theres lots of couta round it doesnt hurt so much
Also very rarely do I use over 300 gram jigs unless up the kings or jigging in deep water for puka

Yea got out Saturday and Sunday. Was around cobra etc and did pretty S**t. But Sunday was good. Went to the pins for the day. Lost the new jigs to cuda. Bloody swarming with them. So bait freezers pretty full. Heaps of rats and a couple fish between 10-12kg. Both better fish on the pink benthos 200g. however that was one of the only jigs we had left by that stage. Shopping online for some new ones now lol. This jigging thing could get expensive
