I was out yesterday fishing for bluenose and some sign went through about 100m down so I jigged it. Very good results on some nice albies... Anyone here target tuna on jigs regularly or have good results like mine? |

Maybe not so much here in NZ but I know the guys in North Carolina in the USA target several species of Tuna using jigs to great effect. ------------- www.synit.co.nz |

| Ive jigged up yellow fin tuna over in aussie but never had any success over here. I have heard of guys jigging up tuna down at Mayor island but im pretty sure that was 5+ years ago now if not more |

This was on the 335 area outside garden patch. It always interests me what fish will go for jigs from time to time. I was on the 100 line a while back and the bottom was a carpet of some fish in huge numbers. When I started jigging I came up with a couple of red snapper as well as my target kingfish. they aren't very big for taking a 350gm jig.

Nice work Garry tuna are suckers for jigs, i have caught quite a few albies when targeting kingies( shame not more yft around these days) i have a few new models of jigs that i will be giving a serious workout this season for albies -------------  www.kavemantackle.co.nz

I've been thinking exactly this trying to land a jig on the nose of some albies under the thermocline in Rarrotonga. Remember seeing Toby from Epic get a nice about 25kg albert on a jig. What sort of jig action would they be inclined to? ------------- 6th place in the inaugural Te Kauwhata Regionals paddle crab division |

i will be using 120-250g slow pitch jigs, i will have some available in 5-6 weeks. will also betrying a few lighter models about 60g Cabby, nothing huge in early summer, maybe 10-12kg at most but if you use light tackle then they are a great sport fish ------------- www.kavemantackle.co.nz

I had a cheap 400grm centre weighted jig in pink and white. I got the impression they may not be fussy. My friend said he was talking to someone from one of the islands and they catch several species of Tuna on jig. I will ask him where. Fish not real big that I got but good not small. I wonder if it was a case of right place right time? It's fun to have a set up handy and do a little prospecting. I noticed in close plenty of life on structure around the 100 so this weekend will be a kingi trip if the weather is ok..........

Very productive way to catch and target tuna.
For yellow fin we get infront and up ahead of the school and start casting stickbaits from the bow while the rest of the crew drop jigs and small live baits, jigs are great as the get down faster and quicker, tuna schools move quick so this works well. One of the most memorable Tuna jigging sessions I have been part of was off the Balearic islands in the Med, we were fishing a huge school of Bluefin and at one stage the water went silver under the boat with so many tuna swimming past us, twice we got bust off by other fish hitting the braid. I have never seen so many tuna in my life as I did that day. Hey Boulder that's the second slender Tuna I have read about on here recently off Whangaroa - Cavalli's. Never seen one caught myself.

When I was out about 3 weeks back there were schools of albies out by Mayor island. We threw stickbaits at them for a while but never thought about jigs as they were soo close to the surface. Missed out on a good feed me thinks ------------- TAS - Its a real disease |
