Yep. Heres a quick rundown of the rules.
More info at www.marsdencovefishingclub.com

Spearfisherman enter individually, but dive and weigh as a pair (team).
The spearfishing section will be operated under a points system (Scoring as per below).
Teams may spear and present fish over the two days and select the best fish of any day to submit for their entry. This allows for a team that can only spear for one day to remain competitive.
All competitors must freedive, SCUBA equipment may not be used.
Each team member may only carry one spear gun.
Cartridge type, compressed gas guns and power heads are not permitted.
Each team must tow one Red, Yellow or Orange coloured float or Plat. This equipment must be fitted with a divers flag of at least 15 x 20cm and be self-righting.
Points System:
The minimum weight for all eligible fish will be 500 grams.
Competitors may weigh in a maximum of 2 fish per target species not including Kingfish. Only 1 kingfish may be weighed in per team.
There will be one Weigh Master, one screening table and all fish checked for the minimum weight on electronic digital scales.
Each team will be responsible for sorting their catch prior to presenting it to the Weigh Master. Fish will be placed on the screening table, checked and sorted, then ‘Presented’ to the Weigh Master. Once ‘Presented’ they may not be interfered with again by the competitors, until weighing and scoring is completed.
Each team shall ‘Present’ one kingfish and two each of the remaining eligible species per day.
100 penalty points for any of the following breaches:
fish that are less than 80% of the minimum weight
an ineligible specie
fish that do not meet the MOF regulations, or more than the allowable number of any species is presented.
Any fish to receive a penalty will incur the loss of a maximum of 100 points.
Scoring:
100 points per eligible fish and then a further 10 points per kilogram
Maximum weight to be scored for each fish will be 8 kilograms.
Team placing’s will be determined by greatest total of points scored to the lowest.

Hi RMH,

No set limits or restrictions, just not in Marine Reserves!

You can spear anywhere and as long as you make the weigh-in times and have a ticket, your eligible. We've tried to make this comp fit with as many people from all of the show as we could and not place too many restrictions. We have guys from Wellington, Auckland, the far North and locally competing so far.

Cheers

Do you need to be at the briefing on the Thursday night?

Hi,

No It's not a requirement, but we go over rules and regs and hand out briefing packs ( these include comp rules, local regs and some free stuff (stubby cooler, float Line etc)), but you can collect that prior to starting the comp from the Bar in the Marquee.

Just make sure you know the comp rules if you can't make it.

See ya there.

Hey Bandit,

We'll have guys staying in the marquee (to guard the bounty) Friday night, so as early as you like Saturday morning, but you can collect (prepurchased) online tickets at anytime before weigh in.

We've had quiet a few PM on small issues, so to clarify:

1. You don't need to be at the briefing,
2. You don't need to collect you ticket before spearing (if you have purchased it online), but you will need your physical ticket to weigh in, so collect it when you can from the marquee.
3. All fish are presented whole.
4. Yes the weather is looking bloody primo!!!!!

Awesome weekend for it.

Chains and I headed out to the chicks on Friday evening and had only enough light for about 20 minutes in the water when we got there. Just enough light to pick up a trevally, then anchor up in Boulder Bay for the night.

Sleep was hard to come by - the full moon was like a floodlight, but eventually the moon was replaced by the sun and we could return to the sea.

Could think of worse things to wake up to.

As the day progressed we accumulated the odd fish here and there, but not seeing anything very special. The odd butter, porae, another trevally, some koheru (which didn't make the weight limit) a boarfish, a tarakihi, a kahawai....

While wasting our time swimming against an almost impossible current at Tara Rocks these Saffas turned up.....

Threw a bit of banter between the boats, then left them to it.

We slowly ticked more fish off but there were some basic fish that we should've had- but didn't.
It was the Hen and Chicks and we didn't even have a single snapper!
After a bit of a strategy chat we decided to try a spot that has produced snapper in the past.

It worked.

Think the biggest of these two was 9.3?

All up this is what we got, which put us in second place.

It was a well run comp with a massive prize pool! No 55 knot winds this time which was nice.
Good work and a huge thank you to the Marsden Cove crew and all the sponsors.
