going to make up some berley of my own and thinking cat food and some old bait and some pig pellets any other ideas and put into old milk bottles also take some to just throw out am thinking the manukau later this week,do the pellets go off seem to be quite cheap 20kgs for $25.00 through rd1 do they go off at all or do they last for ages

Hey mate, Pig pellets are awesome, don't go off for ages, I've had some in the barn for over a year now, still good. When I make berley, I use Catfood, old bait, tuna (during summer when I can catch them) And salmon heads/frames, and pig pellets.. seems to work mint! :)
Also I quite often put pellets in a container by themselves and sprinkle them over the side when I'm fishing.

My old berley mix that went through the mincer when I had one used to be left over skippy frames and heads, jack mackeral, pillies, kina,rolled oats, pig pellets and fish oil I used to cut the tops off of 1.25 liter coke bottles and fill them up with the berley brew then chuck em in the freezer and they used to fit into my home made berly dispenser nicely and that brew used to get the dinner bell ringing also the fish oil used to stop the berley bombs from freezing solid.

Pig or chook pellets sprinkeled with tuna oil and stored in paint buckets with the lids on tight last for ages, prob ok for up to a year. they take a while to disperse, not always a bad thing tho. ------------- I waste most of my money on fishing tackle. The rest I invest in women and booze. |

Where do you get tuna oil these days bro? And what is pig pallets made from, any fish product added? The reason I ask cos I heard our Kahawai are sold to Australia for this and fertiliser industry?

make sure you check what the pellets are made from, some are made without anything fishy in them and dont work as well as the ones with fish bits in em apart from that they work meeeeean

1kg nescafe or Milo tins are good also . Punch a few holes in them and they sit nice inside the wobbly pot. |

I ment store them in paint buckets, then you have burley ready to go at any time, no need for a freezer. I use good old onion sacks but the tins with holes would work too. ------------- I waste most of my money on fishing tackle. The rest I invest in women and booze. |

i had a whaler take off with the wobbly berly pot off ohope one day. never attach it to the anchor rope again after that...used skippy frames macks and oil from decorro... and 25kg's of pellets. i filleted 200 jack macks and used the frames in the mixer with skippy frames 5 cups of oil...or close to 2ltrs. nowonder the whaler came in for a look..... 1 night of fishing for macks filled up both chilly bins all on sabikis..at the local wharf.. ------------- http://www.legasea.co.nz" rel="nofollow">  MH... Jeeze JSF that would have taken you for a damn good ride being towed around like that. A stock food company called seales winslow in morrinsville makes berley pellets give them a bell and see what the brand name is.

hunter naa it took the pot when i was hauling it up. massive bang saw the whaler and no burly pot...glad it did not tangle it self up in the warp, or me and chase would have been in some hairy moments getting rid of the thing...all cool thats fishing, even saw hammer heads in 20ft of water to..nice big ones... at whale island last year...water was really warm close in...year before that purple water 80mtrs behind whale. nice n warm felt like going for a swim...same summer marlin free jumping in 60 80 mtrs behind whale island...and shet loads of skippys 5kg ones..way to big for a live bait me thinks. ------------- http://www.legasea.co.nz" rel="nofollow"> MH... | I freeze my burly mix in cut pieces of down pipe. Let them thaw slighlty then slide em out into bags an back in the freezer. Made a few batches poured into ice bags, nice strong plastic bags thst don't leak easily. |

bringing home the bacon attitude, like it guys, some excellent info here and great ideas... if you have and old surf rod kicking around or can get hold of a extra long bamboo pole add a set of prongs to it and spear yourself some Kina when the water is clear enough to see them, saves getting wet in winter.. adding that to your burley, cant beat what snapper will die for.... ------------- Thanks for everything you did for us Eric. may you rest in peace, You were one of the real legends of NZ recreational fishing |

 Me too (100mm) but I freeze mine in the tubes and only remove from the tubes when I need them. This means I can leave them in the chilly all day in the boat and if unused back into the freezer for another trip. |

| My old berley dispenser was one of those containers that had the plastic handle and the screw on lid (similar to what those big flare packs for boats come in) drilled plenty of holes in it around the sides and in the bottom put an old lead weight in it and used to have it attached to 20 meters of rope it got used in the surf and off the bricks did a bloody marvelous job used add fish guts from KY and trevs to it during the day loaned it to a mate one weekend and he never gave it back. |

Cosmo, in shallow water or low current water I make burley into tennis ball sized 'grenades' and freeze them with a stone inside and drop them around the boat. When I use that system the fish I catch are usually full of burley so you need to be careful you dont throw too many out! Not sure how you would get pig pellets to stick together. Sprinkling pellets over the side could see them drawing fish away from your boat. ------------- Best gurnard fisherman in my street |

We often add them to the burley pot with a kina or fish burley. If you are going to throw them over the side of the boat, then put the pellets in a bucket with water and fish oil/guts/old bait/frames etc. Don't just throw them over dry, or else they just sink to the bottom and don't disperse (I have seen this while spearfishing under the boat). ------------- Teach your missus to fillet and shuck. Its been suggested that Pig Pellets contain fish. I have looked at some pig foods ingredients on the net, and only one mentioned fish - most didn't, vegetable matter only plus vitamins etc. I have looked at adding fish oil to pig pellets - but, holy smoke, fish oil is rdidiculously expensive - cheapest I found, $6.60 a litre filling your own container, $11.90 incl container. And petrol is $2.20! |
