The less said about last years Comp the better, so it's good to see Roly and Cam back in the driving seat of the comp this year and Synit is proud to be back on board with the Tournament as we know Roly and Cam will put 100% into it.Roly and Cam approached CJ and I earlier in the year about a few prizes for this years tournament and just as well it was earlier rather than later as we are fully booked out for the remained of 2013. I agreed to put up a few rods from the new 2014 Mantis Jigging range and a casting rod from the Razar GOM range... Here's a few taste tester pic's including some of the Mantis rods we plan to donate as prizes. These rods have had hours of work go into the custom artwork on the blanks and as such we have not put any labels of the model or weight class on the blank. Rather than cover the artwork with a sticker we have laser etched the rod model and type onto a small spacer at the rear of the reel seat... All the rods are 1 offs as each pattern is unique and we have used some new vibrant pearlescent colours into which I have put our signature Neuron flow patterns...

Hopefully it will offer an opportunity for the competition entrants to win of a unique one off rod that not only looks great but also has the most advanced blank designs with 3M Nano Helical Particle resins and Nano Live Fibre Technology in them.. I'm sure that Roly and Cam will put one of these up on the Friday Night briefing as a lucky draw prize... Value wise they would range from $975-$1150ea, most that is the cost of time and skill to put the finish on by hand with brush, tooth pick and heat torch... If someone is interested in learning the art of true rod craft stay tuned as may have an opportunity early next year for the right person...

We will add one of these to the jigging rod prize list as well. Mantis X46 White Tiger. The Arctic White Pearl looks stunning with a black pattern in it...

Giday Guys,
Here is a bit of info for you.
TOPCATCH
HEAVY METAL JIGGING & CASTING
TOURNAMENT
16/17th Novemeber 2013
(Reserve date 23/24 Nov)
Really exciting to be presenting this tournament again and
back with the 2011 format with a few tweaks! We have more sponsors than ever
before and the fishing has been pretty hot with more over 30kg kingfish caught
this season than in any other I that I’ve seen.
So what’s the nitty gritty?…
We will be operating out of the modified Chart 54 as per the
Tauranga Sports Fishing Clubs changes. This chart cuts off at Lottin point (in a
line north from this point) so does exclude the Ranfurly Banks. We are making
an exemption from Club rules however that allows competitors to leave from
other ports so you can fish from Waihau, Whakatane and Tairua etc. All fish are
to be submitted and weighed at the TSFC.
All tickets are available from the Tauranga Sportsfishing
Club and are on sale now. Entry forms can be downloaded from http://www.tsfc.co.nz/TOURNAMENTS/Top-Catch-HMJ-Entry-Form.pdf" rel="nofollow - www.tsfc.co.nz/TOURNAMENTS/Top-Catch-HMJ-Entry-Form.pdf
The first 100
competitors will receive a Deluxe
Starter Pack full of handy terminal and fishing essentials plus regional
information and hot tips. ALSO Random Mystery Golden Tickets from our local charter
operators will be found in at least 5 of these packs.
SPECIES: All Major Prizes are for Kingfish.
MAJOR PRIZES: 1-5th Kingfish Measure
Section.
1-3rd Weigh Section
OTHER PRIZES Heaviest Other (Bass/Hapuka/Bluenose/Gemfish/Tuna)
No sharks.
Fisherchick
Prize: Womans Longest Kingfish.
Most
unusual catch. Hard Luck Prize.
Briefing
night; Lucky Draw Synit Rod & lots of other spot prizes.
Two major categories for the Kingfish
Prizes are the Measure Section (C&R) 1-5th and the Weigh Section
1-3rd. Kingfish must be over 120cm
in length to qualify for Weigh Section (only one fish per angler/both days). Only one major prize per angler. Other prizes may be won in conjunction. In the event of a tie, a
toss of a coin will decide the next pick of a prize.
The major prizes are just being finalized, when they are
I’ll let you know, but suffice you say you will see the brand new Stella’s and
Saragosa range in the mix along with the latest from Jigstar, Synit and all of
our other sponsors. Special thanks to our latest supporters Salt Free, BHP
stick baits and Jonocoogee with his Boat Graphics.
The TSFC day fishing fee has been waived for the tournament. However
if you are not a member of a club you may not apply for a records. At present
IGFA record fish must be submitted on a IGFA measure board. We will have
tournament measure boards available for a cost of $20. Fish.net measure boards
will be accepted also. All measure boards must accompany each measured fish
submission, as boards will need to be ratified at the Tauranga Sports Fishing
Club.
I was asked about trolling lures. Here is our response:Lures maybe trolled but only if hookless.(so only in a
teaser capacity). All surface caught kingfish must be cast to with the boat out
of gear.
We have had heaps of inquiry this year and tickets
sales are strong, so we are really looking for to a great comp this year.
There is more info on the entry form, and you
will receive lots more information including how to photograph and submit fish on the
briefing night. This will be the same as 2011. Happy to answer more questions!

Amended chart 54 as per Club rules, so Ranfurly area is outside (nth from Lottin Point is the eastern cut off). Competitors can however launch from other ports, as this is not a one base tournament. At least one team member at briefing and all fish must be submitted through the TSFC for the comp.
It's going to be an interesting comp, some big fish coming from White lately, also some donkeys from Mayor this year. 135cm from last year will take some beating!
Happy to answer any other questions guys.
Cheers Roly

What are the rules regarding measuring Roly?
Do entrys have to be measured on an "official" measure or is a tape measure adequate, assuming a good quality picture is taken?
If an official measure is required is it part of the starter pack?
From memory I think I have a IGFA measure somewhere - this is fine? I guess the only querie could be proving date if any measure can be used.

I will be donating 10 terror slings for Roly and Cam to give away at briefing as they see fit to help promote the catch and release section, these slings have been tested with cams daughter weighing 50odd kgs so break one and you've got a world record fish :-)! Will also have some for sale on Friday at $25 each. Ps I heard from a reliable secret sauce(wattie) that mayor island is holding a lot of 20kg fish but 1.4m long juveniles, that's where we will be!

Hey Falco,
We will have brand new measure boards for sale $25.
You can use f.net boards, igfa or last years jig comp boards. We will be urging competitors to check their old boards as we cant be sure they are not shrinking or stretching with heat and time. So Cam will be measure board scrutineer at briefing. We will also require measure boards to be submitted with kingfish photo files this year, just to keep everything above board.
Just a reminder also that all photos will need to be taken on a camera with either a CF or SD card. If your not sure bring in your camera lead as all photo files will need to be downloaded to PC.
You'll get a full instruction at briefing re photo's plus a flyer to take away.
Best prize line up ever this year!!!!! BRING IT ON.

Who is heading to White Island for this comp? Westerly 10 knots forecast for Saturday & Sunday and a 48.6kg brute of a King Fish caught there only a few days ago.

Liking the way the prizes are set, much much much more value in the measure and release section than the kill section, it's definitely the way of the future for fishing comps, well done Cam, Roly and everyone involved! best of luck everyone.

My White Island hood taken later today on a 160g Bfp Astro! Gave the Stella a good work out and boy did the fish erupt onto the bait after an intense follow to the boat.

Gotta put a mention in for Rob Smith who Placed 6th= with 110cm. For those who were out there he was the old fella in the little red glass boat. When it got to sloppy for us in our big boats we went home...Last to leave....You guessed it. Rob.
Good work to everyone putting in the hard yards. Especially Clint, Aaron and Tim for their podium finishes. Cant wait to do it all again next year.

due to a minor fukup on our behalf (not showing angler numbers in our photos) all our fish got disqualified. That fish went 139cm....
We also had some other decent fish but thems the breaks....
Thanks to shimano though they hooked us up with a saragosa 20k for our efforts and we had a mean weekend up in the BOP with some cool people.
congrats to all the anglers and strictly fishing for winning

This was an absolute donkey. Unfortunately the guys did not follow the rules and the fish was disallowed due to no angler number being in the photo.
At 139cm this monster would have destroyed every other fish in the tournament, plus would have been the longest and heaviest fish we have ever had in the event. I'm so gutted for the guys, for Synit (as it was caught on a Synit rod) and for the tournament. Given the effort put in from your team and being new entrants, I would have liked nothing better than to have handed you guys the trophy. Nonetheless a spectacular effort and a PB smashed, so that must feel good. Best of all she's still swimming so you had better come back next year and put that number on her!!!!!!!
On a brighter note the good boys from Shimano NZ did not want to let the lads go home empty handed, so gifted them the latest Shimano Saragosa 20000SW. Incredibly generous on top of all of the other prizes

That was a supreme effort By Jonty and Davo's team, we were right next to Jonty and Davo to witness the fight unfold, great angling skills there and great skippering by Davo to keep that fish away from the sharks . I know the organizers, sponors and competitors all felt gutted for you Jonty none more than me as Roly mentioned...it would have been the icing on the weekend for CJ and I to see that little Synit 250 take out the supreme award. It has to be mentioned again that even though the fish was disqualified Shimano and the organisers need a big thanks for what they did
Synit will be back next year with more innovative rods and products up for grabs... and I hope Kelly and Aaron from Team Assassin will let me skipper Assassin for them again.... On a slightly downer note... the absence of many anglers at the presentation didn't go unnoticed, I know some had to get away early to travel home but there were thousands of dollars in spot prizes still up for grabs even if you missed out on getting a place... one lucky guy walked away with a Jigstar rod as a spot prize.. not to mention there were x2 UFO smoker/cookers plus a heap of topend stickbaits given away... The sponsor go to lengths to make sure the organisers have not only a quality prize table for the place getters but a good spot prize table as well... talk to Roly it averaged out at $220 in prizes for each entry.....

Daveo - As Roly said it was gutting not to be able to give you guys the Stella30K and Ocea rod that went with it along with the prestigious trophy....truly a spectacular fish and effort from your team Daveo...sorry we didn't get to have a beer to celebrate that one!....either way hope you guys enjoy your new Shimano Saragosa and come back next year to show us all how it's done again!
On to Roly, Cam and the team at Tauranga top Catch.....your respective blood needs bottling! thanks heaps for all of your hospitality and giving us a great experience....this tournament is on point and great to see all(?) kingfish measured and released and the weigh station deathly quite...was almost like looking in to the future of fishing tournaments......long may it last!
T'was excellent to catch up with some old faces and make the acquaintances of others.

Big thanks to Roly and topcatch for the very smooth running of the comp. Fishing wise unfortunately we were fishing Mayor and to say it was hardwork is an understatement but still a mint weekend out on the water.
The level of prizes thanks to Synit, Shimano and many others was mind blowing, the rods from Synit as prizes and on display are pieces of artwork. Truly stunning!!!!!!!
Gutted for Dave and Jonty, news of that fish filtered out pretty quickly and couldn't believe when we got back to the club and heard the bad news!
