It was Friday, 3pm and Kelly and I were running for the doors like the school bell to go home had rung. We were in the car and leaving Tauranga to meet the rest of the team at Bay Fair.

We caught up with the other crew and convoyed down towards Waihau. Little did we know this was going to be a 3.5 hour drive as I had only anticipated something around the 2.5 hour mark. Anyway we started the long journey to catch up with Captain Aaron Sargent aka Sarge on Strictly Fishing (we cannot say enough good stuff about this guy, he is a dam top bloke and a dam good skipper that knows the Banks like his back yard). Around the 3 hour mark it had just turned dark and with the roads getting tighter and windier we felt like we were heading into some kind of lame horror flick where you find yourself screaming at the screen "don't go through the door". Then all of a sudden a solid sized Boar just walces out, across the road and over the bank as it owned the place.  Well that was a wake up and a realisation we were out from civilization and with no reception.

Insert photos of driving here...

We finally arrived at our "lay down spot", dropped the gear off and headed for the Waihau Pub to meet Sarge for the run down and then dinner. So we cleared up all the loose ends, headed home, completed the final preparation of rigging (for some of the crew it was only just starting). Kelly was on PR Knot duties and I was giving the run down on Jigs, sizes and basic setup of "upgrading" the assist setups.

Its 5am Saturday morning and let's be honest here, none of us got any shut eye as we were just too excited for what lied ahead. Loaded up and Coffee poured back as if it was the first beer after a long week at work. Cars loaded and back on the road for the final 40 mins before the boarding process was to begin. Then what do you know some more dam excitement... This time we are pursuing the other crew that were in front of us. They stop in a stupid halt for some unknown reason... I scream at Kelly and she applies the anchors. You feel the ABS kick in however this is not enough. She swerves to the left off the road and ends up beside the front car avoiding a near rear ending and then there it is... I huge heard of Bulls are walking down a drive way and straight across the road with no one to be seen???? We were dam lucky and quite frankly just wanted to get some much needed rail time. So we end up at Hicks bay and board Strictly Fishing.

We start the nice leisurely cruise out to the Banks at 20-25 knots. The conditions were not ideal but forecast to die off just after lunch (which they did).

Right time for some fish. Basically the Jigs just went off. From the moment we deployed we were just getting hammered left right and centre. Kelly gets her first drop. On the way down i turn to the decky and say  "bro watch this, she will smash it, she will hookup". Ol Mikey just says "okay" (just like the guy on the drink driving add where they say "just crash here bro"). So first drop produced a  PB Puka on a Jig (which didn't last long). The next three drops I said to Mikey watch her bro she will get one every time. And what do you know 3 kingfish straight after the Puka.

^ Kelly just lands her Puka and boom smashed hahaha...

Then I was up and straight into a test it was for me, a nice king to get me warmed up. So this hit the deck and the kings kept coming along with the PUKA.

All the boys had Kings coming then I was locked into a beauty. However this time it was not charging like a king. Around 20 meters to go... pop pop pop and bang here is this monster PUKA on a nice purple curved slidder (my favourite jig).

Next was Kels turn and the heat was on for her. With alot of Puka hitting the deck this had to be a PUKA. She locked the rod and just gave it to the fish. The decky "ol Mikey" leans over and says "far bro, she is better than most guys that come on this boat", classic. The there it was her next new PB of a Puka on another Jig.

Nathan from Auckland had then hooked a horse... We thought this was going to be a horse of a BASS. after 20 minutes he had it to the boat... A dam Stingray. O for awesome.

http://s84.photobucket.com/user/laxibumbreath/media/Ranfurly%20BANKS%201st%20mission/1016323_524858280903466_887335250_n_zps27bf8f91.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

We then moved on to chase some King Terraki for a while where we all got to land these. So we landed a few of these wee pups.

http://s84.photobucket.com/user/laxibumbreath/media/Ranfurly%20BANKS%201st%20mission/992996_524858354236792_1181149915_n_zps3eff7072.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

The time was getting on we only had around 2 hours of fishing left and it was game time for some BASS. So we geared up the TLD 50s and went for it. We did something like 8 passes picking up Puka every pass. We ended up dropping a solid fish. We fought this for 45 minutes to only lose it.

  http://s84.photobucket.com/user/laxibumbreath/media/Ranfurly%20BANKS%201st%20mission/6_zps4d83a2ea.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

Anyway on the final pass we had a solid double header and a BASS on another rod. Sarge and Mikey were determined to make this stick. They did everything in their power to make this stick as the last fish we dropped that Sarge called as a HORSE BASS was lost due unforeseen circumstances that meant Sarge, Mikey and Myself had to attend to for 30 mins (we won't mention what this was). So anyway after 20 minutes on the final pass up popped a mint BASS to really seal our trip.

We cannot say enough good words about Sarge, the Boat, the Decky, the atmosphere, their attitude, their knowledge, their professionalism with a touch of Moari thrown in. They really have it sussed and HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend you get in touch with Sarge and book a trip with them to the BANKS. We are already trying to sort the next one with him.

Cheers Aaron, Kelly and I had a flaming awesome time and are itching to get back and 1 up everything.

Stay tuned anyway guys and girls we will have a clip coming however i have 60 gig of footage to get through. We have tones more photos but have been sitting here for around 2 hours writting and loading this up.

Cheers

Great report, Aaron! Shoot we'd better not both go out with the Sarge, it could get confusing...

Strictly Fishing is the only way I'd go back to the banks again, the day trip thing just works so well and you get to drive the magnificent East Cape coastal road. Sounds like you saw more of the nocturnal local wildlife than usual!

Oh cheers boys to much. Yeah we are stoked to finally say we have done it. Its only taken us 4 years. But we finally did it and what a way to start off with at the Banks with many more trips to come.

The biggest king is what I am holding. We had great king sign but the Puka were just chomping at the Jigs before the Kings. But we were not complaining as they were dam fun and some great sizes caught. We wanted to tick a few boxes off the list and thats just what we did. The next trip we do will be chassing that 40+ king on lead.
