I would doubt it... was low and clear last night when I crossed it, but we had a massive download over night and flooding throughout the Bay, mainly in the Western bay though...

I'll make a couple of calls and ask some mates how the river looks today.

It's got a bit of colour but people are fishing it is the word... worth a crack with the default plan to drop back to the Waikato spring creeks if need be... they didn;t get any rain at all last night... or bugger all.

Not much rain, went over the stream on the way and home from work and didn;t notice an issue, but can;t recall looking either... would be safe to say, given how little rain in the last 24 hours, it should be hot to trot.

River is in good nick... rain is predicited for tomorrow could colour it up a bit, but a few fish are moving through, plenty of big browns but proving their usual elusive selves...

Please excuse my ignorance, but I've never fished the Ngongotaha stream before and was wondering where you might go about getting some access. I've fished the Waiteti stream plenty up to the bridge pool but never the Ngongotaha. The last thing I want to do is accidentally piss people off by running through their property. Are these entrances ok? Also is any part of the stream wadable?

OR

Sorry for the noob questions!

All three access's are OK and are legal - you won't piss anybody off.  Not sure about the wade able bit as its not necessary anyway.

Cheers Islandpaddler.
Last time i went to the bridge pool on the Waiteti stream I was told I wasn't allowed to fish there as the neighbouring property owned the section of the stream through maori rights or something. Seemed dodgy but how the hell am i supposed to know. Anyway, they told me to fish here i'd need to pay $20, so i did. Later found out that it wasn't the case. It was public land.

Yeah its alright though. Saw one rise a couple of times and that was it. Must have lost a dozen flies to my great arch nemesis, the tree and his a**hole sidekick the gorse. How was the Family Day yesterday at the Riro? I would've given my leftie to go but unfortunately was stuck in the smokey city with 3 assignments due, one of which I'm meant to be doing now and is due tomorrow. FML.

The middle river is is firing at the moment... in the area adjacent to the hatchery, great run into the stream with the rain with some lovely fish being taken. The Lakes, Ruato, The Pipe etc have started to fire and one report from Tarawera says the big fish are turning up again for the fly anglers at stream mouths....

Okataina has been a bit of a Star over the last week with several doubles coming to shore.

Miles Rushmer nailed this 11 pound wild beast!

Ngonie is running well and ishing well with fish in pockets. if you are not finding fish where you are keep moving, they will be there but you have to find them, when you do, there'll be heaps. Not great flash fish, but plenty of fish and big runs could happen anyday.

There will still be fish in there mate, will more than likely be quite a few spent ones but there should still be a few fresher ones in the mix as well

Just got back from the middle reaches (Elliot Park to the Agrodome) and the stream is extremely low and clear.  Spotted only one small Rainbow over the whole stretch - I normally see 4-6 on a bad day.

The stream needs some heavy rain to get the spawners swimming up it from the lake.  When that happens it should go off.   The Utuhina has similar conditions at the moment as well.

What he said....

We need a good dollop of Rain but we should get it this weekend.... It's always worth a look and always offers the prospect of bigger fish than the Waihou. Feel free to ring me at Rotorua H&F for up to date info on the day of need be,.

Even before the rain the Ngongie was going off... spoke to a couple of blokes today, one who landed and released five below the town bridge yesterday morning and another who landed his limit today, and kept two of them, one of them an eight pound Rainbow. The fish are there, but in pockets, keep moving till you find them. Some good heavy rainfalls tonight, not sure if it's going to be enough to cause a fresh, but it should cause some fish to run.

I'd be keen on hearing some up to date info as I'll be in rotorua for the long weekend.

Previously the glow bug and h&c combo has been pretty effective for me, fish the deep holes.

Hi guys,

With the forecasted rain I would be surprised if there weren't a bunch of fish in there on Saturday.

Water should have a bit of colour to it Friday avo as well for the lower section.

Cheers

Thanks for the info guys , did not see that link until just now but thanks anyway BFist , how did you go anyway.
Arrived Friday avo , so after setting up camp I snuck away on foot starting at the mouth and working upstream , across the main road and up to the area by the horse show jumping paddocks. No fish as mainly walking and looking . Water was coloured slightly.

Mid morning Sat , got dropped off at paradise valley access and went for a walk. If any has left behind a SM size guide shirt it should still be hanging up on a bush stream side by the way.Tongue Spotted several fish but man were they spooky , water a little clearer. They just seemed to know where to look , from 2oft above and behind them I still spooked a coupleOuch . The fish I saw were hanging out in very hard to cast to spots , definitely have to roll cast here. Was a frustrating morning to be honest. Ran into local guide Mr Hammill , friendly gent who gave us a few tips . So after collecting all my toys and putting them in back in the cot away I went . About 20min before pick up time I landed rainbow at 4 lb.

Sunday avo , 2 hours for 2 more fish in the same location. River running more clear. First fish another 4lber with the next nudging 5 lb. Lost another which felt bigger to the blackberriesOuch

I went out for a few hours on Sunday arvo with my dad. We managed to get him his first trout on a fly.

It was pretty slow all day, we only managed to hook 4 trout between the two of us, with just that one caught.

The numbers in the river seemed down from earlier in the year. I'm not sure if they had just gone to ground with all the traffic on the river.
