Latest reports say they don't know if he was attacked by the shark or drowned and then the shark came for him. Information seems pretty sketchy for now, no doubt will be a more complete picture by the evening news.

We'll see. IMO before they even get to the mis identification problems (which I don't believe in) they'll be waying up energy returned for risk & cost.
The easier the meal the better.

From the Herald website...
"Eagle crew spotted the shark, which the Herald understands was at least 12 feet long, while it was still near the man's body. A source told the Herald that the Eagle stayed above the shark so that police could locate it in an IRB.
When they reached the shark an officer fired at least one shot at it. It has been confirmed that the shark was hit, but it swam from sight seconds later."

According to herald story he was spotted swimming then raising hand in distress, then attacked by one or more sharks.
My take is he was swimming and a shark attacked. Many people drown every year and most of the bodies turn up days later intact, so prob his swimming action attracted the beast.
That coast is swarming with sharks....that's all I seem to catch these last few weeks.
Sad way to go for that man.......and sad for his family.
Shark was only doing what sharks do........however best to kill it tho if it's taken a liking to human flesh.

I don't think water temps have anything to do with it. Great Whites happily cruise cool water hunting seals and can regulate their body temperature they are basically warm blooded. Its a terribly unlucky way to go for the man just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I don't think shooing the shark will make much difference, we can't exactly put off other sharks from cruising shallow water and they are not man eaters. You enter their enviroment at your own risk.

Exactly - while very sad and unlucky for the guy and his family, as soon as we enter the water we are then in the sharks domain
If they were using the bullets to try and get the body back I would understand it
If they were simply trying to hunt down this 'killer shark' then its pretty stupid
If there any actual scientific evidence that sharks get a taste for human meat and therefore go on a rampage.....seeing as there has been countless attacks on humans over the years and that shark hasnt been killed, and no ensuing rampage has eventuated - id assume not?

No that would be money.
We kill thousands of fish each day in the name of recreation, so why suddenly draw the line at killing a shark when the benefits, perceived or real, far outweigh the cost.

The food chain has nothing to do with it. The shark ate a person. It needs to be killed. The fact that theres no evidence that they don't hunt humans after they have tried one doesnt wash with me, Why would it be any different with a dog and sheep. Not worth the risk.

Real bummer this happened and condolences to the family , but it was a matter of time with the way things are going for animals of the sea searching for food in other places.
My guess is it was a Few young great whites cruizing for food and one attacked , causing the others to join in.
Ive probably said this before but seems to be an increase of attacks in new area's over the last few years and more attacks in shark prone spots aswell. All most likely another side effect of mankind stuffing up the world we live in.

Identification guessed BA from reports and size of the first shark that attacked, knowing that area of the west coast my best guess would be a GW from the surrounding island first (with the size reported in the first attack) then if true a pack attack (this from the report on the news from a witness) 5 minutes later, then would be some of the hundreds of bronzies that patrol that beach attracted to the body for obvious reasons..... 3-4 GWs would mean no body to recover. I was of the thought that GWs are generally lone animals. Very sad day for the Muriwai community.

I'm not sure ? In the Cape waters (False Bay) where there is a huge population of GW'S I often observed GW's together. Might be different for NZ though.

a large GW will attack for pleasure and just let it die, more so if smaller GWs are in the area, its more likely to be a female which is doing the attacking, the smaller GWs will then help themselves to the carcass if hungry... not likely to be any other type of shark in the area of a GW as they will often be attacked and eaten themselves by the GWs more so if they have a carcass they are protecting...
this part of the West coast is home to a lot of seals and quite often the young which have grow a bit by now are still not aware/scarred of a GW and become easy targets, hence a swimmer could easily be mistaken for seal and be hit mistakenly...
we cant blame the GWs for trying to feed itself and we cant blame anyone for trying to scare the shark off its prey while trying to recover the victim....
the sorry thing about this whole affair is someone died and i sincerely feel for them...

Hey come on guys ...... a person has been killed under horrific circumstances that none of us would want to happen to ourselves or anyone we knew. This thread is simply to acknowledge that fact also offer condolences to the family & imo is totally inapropriate to use it as a platform to debate or argue the rights or wrongs as you see them of killing the shark. If you have strong opinions one way or the other in that regard how about expressing them somewhere more appropriate & less unfeeling.

That piece of the West coast between the Kaipara and Manakau harbours and either side seem to be favored hunting grounds for big sharks including White Pointers, going by reports from fishers.
Swimming off rocky headlands in that area at this time of year puts you at risk in my humble opinion. Even though the risk is still probably small, I'd recommend people go for a swim somewhere else. That bloody coastline with its rips kills enough to warrant not swimming there.
Its tragic and I feel sorry for the family, especially his 2 year old daughter who now faces growing up without her dad.

Very sad and my condolences to the family. I do not recommend people swim 200 meters off any west coast beach. Its way to dangerous.

Some people need to have a read of what they are posting and what it has to do with a poor guy and his family and friends..FFS people show some respect!!
So what if people want to kill the frigging shark..big deal...if it was a mate/relative of mine Im damm sure I would have my hand up to see the thing off...
Protected?? FFS they shot at it to recover the guy....
At least it was doing what came natural unlike some of the selfish self rightous pricks on here...

I think he is saying that the seven firearm rules do not apply when firing upon GW's as they are protected but for any other species you must apply the seven rules...
Seriously, sorry for the people affected by this tragedy.

This thread is a magnet for the knuckle-draggers and busy-body incorporations -
Admins just delete the crap and ban the morons....shoot first ask questions later.
RIP Adam and aroha to all those effected.

I am finding it difficult to disentangle what's going on in this thread.
(a) a man loses his life - surely we all agree this is a terrible tragedy, for him, friends and family?
(b) the shark that killed him has subsequently been killed by the police. perhaps this could be the subject of a separate thread?
Two threads maybe?
Maybe i am just being simple here.

Kezza, if it wasn't so late and i wasn't so busy I would do just that.
A good man has lost his life, some unpaid lifeguards had to face what is quite probably the most traumatic event they are ever likely to see, the police did all they could to to retrive the man's body. They are the facts.
Those of you who don't see it that way are welcome to keep their thoughts to themselves or they are out of here for a while.
EDIT: I've hidden a pile of the most offensive posts and also those that refer to them, sorry to those who only replied but it is the best way to deal with this. TrickyTune, that was one stupid post, think before you do something like that again please.

Most important point here: A living, loving human being who was known by many, has been taken from this earth tragically. It's effects fuel confusion and debate, due to the fearful circumstances we now try to understand.
Nature can be unbalanced at times, we have all seen the beautiful and the ugly, at sea and elsewhere.
Show your support to the family, friends, rescuers, community and bystanders most touched by this event. You will never fully understand it. Sincere condolences to everyone involved in the loss of Adam Strange.

such a bad thing to happen to any one but especially here as we dont see a lot of this sort of thing, as for the guards the police and the fisherman who were there, I feel for you all, not some thing you want to see let alone have to remember for the rest of your days, as for the victim, Adam rest in peace mate and condolences to all your family near and far.
lots of talk on killing the shark, sorry I am divided they were doing what comes as a natural thing for them, they say [discovery shark week] that shark attacks on us are mistaken identity, I hope that is the case ad we dont have a stalker roaming out there.

On the News today, they'd like to ban the fishermen in the area from using Burley. I guess they think this attracts man eating sharks?

Well, the berley sure wouldnt be driving anything Away. From my experienceas fishing the west coast, you only use berley if you want sharks around.
