I can usually rely on fresh mullet for bait but on my latest trip I only managed to get a parore so I used that - with excellent results. The snapper didn't just nibble the bait either, I was using an unweighted line in shallow water and they just grabbed it and ran. Have I been missing out on a top bait source all these years or were these snapper just exceptionally hungry? Has anyone else tried parore for bait?  |

| Well there you go another potential bait species added to list. Actually only fish that seems to be poor bait is snapper itself. |

May well be a good bait as they are fairly oily however on some days the snaps will attack almost anything so probably before we decide a certain bait is a winner reckon it is only safe to claim it is after it has proven itself successful by fishing it alongside some of the more accepted baits. Then again there was a time not so long ago when the only bait you could buy was trevally or squid & apart from catching your own pllchards, bonito, mackeral, saurey, anchovies etc. simply did not exist & as for burley 95% of fishos would not even known what it was. So yeah .... give parore your best shot to see if it is a winner then let us all know because they are so easy to net to the point they become a real pain in the proverbial. On this note reckon it would be great to run a competion on this forum based on innovative introductions to new forms of bait hitherto with undiscovered potential ...... so much the better if it is a noxious critter such as koi carp or similar or anything that does not deplete our oceans. What do other members here think of such a proposal? IMHO it could do no harm unless the winner was Manukau gurnard which would undoubtable earn the wrath of a certain moderator who shall remain nameless. ------------- When you cry, feel pain or sadness, no one notices your sorrow .... | We often use parore and drummer for burley when spearfishing. Snapper can't get enough of them. |

| yep i remember the days of watties trevally fillets and squid in a box,along came fresh mullet etc.nowdays you offer a snapper a pipi or mussel they want to eat a bit of rubber what next?as for parore i might give it a go(cheap)or go get some free carp from puhinui stream,manukau |

most anything fresh out of the sea is going to catch snapper, try blue cod/red snapper/parrot fish/grand daddy/flounder when fresh they all work, its just that we have a source of baitfish which we can rely on for bait, using something else other than that we tend to frown on, i guess its a mind set... ------------- Thanks for everything you did for us Eric. may you rest in peace, You were one of the real legends of NZ recreational fishing |

Why ? Cos you spearos are usually thought to be of a more nobel higher order inasmuch as unlike we lower contenders namely boat & landbased, you pursue your quarry by joing them in their environment so to speak. To learn you guys resort to the same forms of subterfuge & enticement we less principaled hopefuls do comes as something of dissilusion.
