Sorry for clogging up the forum guys. Just posted a thread about a new real now one about a new rod. Something that can cast light softbaits and lures like rapalas quite far.
Have been looking at: Pflueger Trion 6'6, 3-6kg Quantum Xtra lite 6'6 Berkley dropshot 6'6, 2-4kg Abu Garcia Vertias 7'2, 3-5kg Abu Garcia Velocity 7, 1-3kg Berkley Dropshot, 7'0, 3-6kg
Thoughts on these or anything to add?

Ive got a quantum Xtralite 1-3kg graphite rod and I really like it, can cast 1/16oz a good distance but still has plenty of power. I recently landed a 3kg kahawai on it with no trouble.

Try and get a graphite rod which is rated around 1-3kg. It would be harder to cast light lures using heavier rods.

Scrub the veritas, they are rubbish. The 2-4kg Trion and dropshots are great. The best trout rod I have used is a St Croix LES66LF-2

My experience with the Vertias (in a slightly heavier weight). The guides were rubbish and would bend. The blank was rubbish and would break. Otherwise it was a nice rod.

G-Loomis do some very nice rods if you don't mind paying the $$$...

I have one of these too. It's a good rod for the money, light and responsive, and throws little CD3 rapala's with ease. If I was in your position I'd probably go for the Quantum, but maybe spend more money on the reel.

Pretty much my views as well, not to mention very tip heavy too. the action of the blank was nice though. Im not that keen on waving around a bright white stick when trying to sneak up on trouts either.

We mainly get the entry level G-Loomis rods in New Zealand but are charged premium prices for them..... I have used my mates Loomis for a while and IMO its no better then my Shimano T-Curve which was half the price, and my T-Curve is barely better then my Berkely Dropshot which was half the price again
Diminishing returns quickly sets in with high end spinning gear for trout.
Anyone tried the TFO 9ft Spinning rods http://www.completeangler.co.nz/tfo-spinning-rod-9-4pc-medium-light-xidp392471.html" rel="nofollow - http://www.completeangler.co.nz/tfo-spinning-rod-9-4pc-medium-light-xidp392471.html
A touch heavy for trout, but ideal for Kahawai.

Yeah, loomis rods are very much over rated (and dropshots very underrated, especially the 1st gen) in my eyes, I don't like the handles, the components are not that great for the price either. I am currently building a 8'6" 4-8lb rod for spinning lakes, just glued the handle 2 minutes ago!

I suspect Berkely realized the 1st generation dropshots were to good of a rod hence why they discontinued them. I preferred them over their more expensive ranges.

Loomis do not tend to have enough guides to cover the blank actions for my liking (7 guides usually when I think 8-9 is preferable), but nice hardware, the GL2 series is common is aussie and well priced (it never used to be).
My favorite by far is the Daiwa (I don't usually like Daiwa) Wilderness 7 foot, three piece (packs down to fly rod length) and is rated 2-8lb. Such an amazing rod, crisp, light and powerful with split-butt, Alconite guides and air-foam grips. Infact Daiwa do make some excellent, light spin sticks with aussie bream tournaments in mind - which suit trout fishing styles perfectly!
Do not think you can get them here however, but by far the best actioned spin rod for trout I have used. Also the T-curve T-series 702, 2-4kg is a nice stick but a short butt (great for working plastics). The Dropshot's, especially their 7' 1-3kg is excellent value for money also. The Veritas is very light, but stiff and let down by cheap hardware, but for the price okay rods.
St Croix make some nice spin rods as Shimano. The Mexican Fire and Raider's are not bad mid-range rods. There is a huge choice out there... Don't discount the Shimano Telo-spin either! Amazing teloscopic rod with full Fuji Sic guides, Fuji clamp seat, IM7 blank and lighter than most conventional rods (approx $200) but Berkley have come out with the Nomadic knockoff for around $120. I keep one on my pack when fly fishing... 12 seconds from touching it.... to cast to a fish, I'm such a nerd I've timed it!!!
We get stuck with a very limited selection in NZ, you really have to look to aussie if you want something very decent, or Malcolm Bell stocks some good stuff at the Complete Angler in Chch and is a very accomplished spin fisherman.

Yeah, you guys certainly get the rough end of the stick when it comes to light spin gear, because there is so much money in bream and bass spinning here there is a huge market which leads to a huge range

Yeah, my T-Curve was a bream rod from Australia, I got it from trademe for a fraction of what the guy who got it in paid. Before the Softplastic craze occurred, the range of suitable trout rods was extremely poor, most of them would be sub $120, maybe with the occasional high end loomis.

I have brought in some top end rods for trout spinning in NZ, I ended up sending them to Aussie as its a very small market for mid-to high end light spin gear. We will have some of the new Wychwood True Spin rods here very soon, I also have access to the Nitro range along with Graf Cast

It will come, look how far the soft bait gear has come in NZ in the last 10 years. I actually feel that its a better fight on correctly spin gear than fly gear, the trout isn't handicapped by dragging around the flyline....

I have a trio of Veritas in 1-3kg, 2-4kg and 3-5kg, I have had absolutely no issues with them at all. They all perform really well whether trolling on the lakes, or having a lazy spin in some high country waters when i cant be bothered with the fly rod. Have pulled in up to 5kg rainbows on the 1-3kg rod, and arguably much more satisfying than doing so with the fly rod (apples and oranges though, maybe i am just getting tired of fly fishing).
