There is a massive range of reels in that size, and given they do not have to haulin huge beasts, pretty much all are good really.
How much do you want to spend?
I have Abu Soron 1000 reels that are just awesome to use, love them....

.... but of the Abu,sI think I like the 2000 Ossa even more, and thebeauty of that is it is also a superb softbait reel for snaps etc, really a good small multi-porpoise reel.
Another one I rate hugely is the Penn Conquer. Another awesome reel in the 2000 size.
For maybe a bit less, the Fin-Nor Bahama is a very decent wee reel too.
However, as i said, there is a huge range of reels in that size range, pretty much all will be up to the job of dealing to trout.
My pick... the 1000 Abu Soron. (as pictured)

If the soron is in your price range, it is a really nice reel. Being a 1000 it is also slightly smaller, lighter etc, still takes all the line you"re gonna need too. I have mine spooled with 6lb Nanofil. No worries at all. Great little reels. Mugged some very nice mangrove Jacks in the Solomons on the reel too, and that is lock-and-load fishing for them, no messing about at all! So they have a ton of grunt too.

The Soron STX are a great reel, lifht years ahead of the cheaper shimanos, especially if yiur ysing braid. It all depends on your budget at the end if the day, I run a Daiwa Steez 2004 and a Daiwa Exist 2508 and they are brilliant.

soron stx 10 on sale for 190 at the moment. good deal?

The Soron stx is a good reel, from memory I think $190 is a good price. If you do use it in the sea, make sure to wipe it down because they corrode quite quickly.

Would any one recommend a better alternative or is this probably the best one?

Shimano Stradic Ci4 (carbon infused), unbeatable in 2500 size (more like a 1500-2000 size) Have tried most high end reels including a Stella 1000FB, Daiwa Sol and Luvias, but the Ci4 is unbeatable due to weight and design, very very good value for money with a killer (same as Stella) drag.

You can get the Ci4's posted from places like tacklewarehouse.com in the states quite cheap, chuck in some rapala's or other lures and some braid (for about half the nz prices) and you end up well ahead

The Shimano Stradic Ci4  is a very nice reels, but they do cost more. Either option are more then adequate for catching trout.   For years I fished with a Shimano Slade and it could handle everything which trout, Kahawai and even a Salmon could throw at it.

Stradic Ci4 2500, fantastic reel for the price. Super smooth, light, top drag and perfectly suited to trout spinning. Not as big as other 2500s though, more like a 1500-2000. Matched up to a superlight rod is a brilliant combo + 4lb fireline.

While the Stradic is a very good reel in my opinon its a but overkill for Trout fishing. The full potential of the reel would never even get close to being used on a Trout, I guess if your using it for other things its not so bad but to outlay NZ$300-$350 on a reel thats only going to be used for Trout fishing when a $100 reel would do pretty much the same thing seems over the top.
