OK, I have 80lb braid on the reel and I have some black magic 100lb supple trace to attach to it. If this was a softbait setup I'd tie a double in the braid with a spider hitch and then attach the leader with a 5-turn surgeon's knot. But all the advice for popper or jig fishing says to use a PR knot. Why is this? is it because of the thicker line, or is there some other reason. Would the softbait type approach work, or is there some reason it would fail?

I ve learned to tie the PR knot (easy after you wrk out the procedure) I was told its because the other knots end up with the mono crossing and causing a weak spot where the PR doesn't. For larger fish for me the extra effort is worth it especially on kings

maybe not fail, but with the added line diameters It'll prob cast like a pig thru the guides.
Search FG knot on here, there's been plenty of discussions and there's vid's and stuff online.
Easily tied, low profile, high knot strength.
Either that or a short PR knot (not a long one that'd be used for jigging)
it's all about minimising the knot size for casting.
The aussies use some other knots chasing GT's, but I'm not up to the play on that.

PR or FG knots.
I use the FG cos I dont have a bobbin
look up "FG KNOT" on youtube
TightlinesTV do a good instruction vid
After a couple of pratices at home I had it down, its not hard once you get the hang of the twist
dont use anything that creates a bulky knot.
trust me watching a $50 popper sail through the air after the knot caught while casting & snaped like a bit of cotton
depressing

Good old U tube, can find out how to do almost anything, I was shown the PR by an expert but found an excellent demo on the tube to learn it properly

Now it makes sense, both PR and FG knots don't need the leader to be doubled up and so are lower profile. Is there anything to choose between the PR or FG? They look about the same to tie (I do have a bobbin, so could try either). But I think it would be easier to tie an FG on a boat if I ever needed to, so is that the better one to learn?

I went FG. Main issue being trying to keep line tight whilst tying , using that triangle method . Then i came accross the you tube clip where the guy had the braid from tip of rod , tie a small loop with double overhand knot, this is purely to hook over handle of the reel. Using a little drag pressure you can pull braid out to form triangle ( like bow and arrow) Tighten drag a bit so it dont slip, then you can keep tight say by hooking one finger around braid, freeing up the rest to feed the trace, almost simple as platting. Dont have link to post , but maybe someone on here can come up with that. Very important to keep all turn tight as you go, the bonus being the best place to tie is with your rod in rod holder Oh yeh dont forget to cut the tag end that is attached to the reel handle, not the other bit

easy, after you have smacked yourself in the face with a bobbin 50 times THEN its easy; practice makes perfect

Classic... Blame it on the MRS mate, dont say you were struggling to tie a KNOT. haha. Seen some good faces in my time of people trying to do the PR knot. Tongues half out and one eye closed as if they are they looking down a site aimed at the next prey.
Hell you do it that much i sometimes even PR Knot my Inchiku / Softbait knot. Casts so well. But then when i cant be arsed the old Yaktan comes in handy

Both the FG & PR knots are pricks to tie when in the heat of the battle. Invented a simple one a few weeks ago, seems really good (nicely put to the test on it's second outing yesterday). Will let you guys in on it after a bit more testing.

I found this method to be real easy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4GCH6i5L2I The only thing is to keep the tension the braid has to be tight round your little finger and it rubs on your first finger too. It's OK as long as you don't want to tie lots of them at a time. I did three for practice and I wouldn't want to do many more, I suppose you could wear gloves if you wanted to tie them all day long.

After trying to tie my braid to leader and failing because I could get line tight enough, i came across this way of tying FG knot. I found it super easy to tie and good demonstration. Similar to the guy tying it to the handle above that corokid mentioned.
