I've got a Stella 5000SW (Max drag 13KG) with 200mtr 30lb sun line cast away and have it sitting on a Shimano Terez 15-30lb fast spin rod, which i setup for a quick throw at the Kings, while i took my girl jigging up at channel island a week ago.

didn't hook anything on it, as i spent too much time softbaiting with my Yeehaa 703/Stella 3000FD setup

But with the time i did spend on it, i found this setup didn't cast that well as the rod is too stiff (casting 138gm waxwings and sebile shads), and the 80lb Yo Zuri fluorocarbon was a bit to heavy. (might look at a softer leader)

So, what i am thinking is that i should look at getting another rod to suit ( maybe a dual propose popper/stickbait rod such as Caranx Kaibutsu or ??? something cheaper, would be good), and i can fit about 200mtr of PE3, (i'm thinking YGK casting PE3 or Varivas SMP PE3 (both are around 47-50lb) and in theory i should be able to apply 7-8kg of drag, which is 1/3 of the breaking strain.

I know this isn't a ideal sized reel, but with a shoulder injury, and being a Paraplegic in a wheelchair. It is lighter and easier on the shoulder, and if i like it then maybe i can look at a 8-10SW new black stella once they are released.

What do you think about the setup, it will be a lighter setup, with the limitations of the 200 mtr PE3 and the useable lower drag of the Stella, but in theory it should be fight, like softbaiting on light gear?

what do you think, rod suggestions?

Does look like a nice rod for the 5000, but can you still get them here?, don't see any Smith rods on Yeehaa's site anymore.

yeah don't know really, managed to score mine on trademe a while back, Boulder's got a GTK, he maybe able to source them? dunno

I looked at getting the 6000SW spool from OS to get extra line, but it wasn't huge increase i though it would be, and the spool was going to be around $330 delivered. (i'd rather spend more $ on some good braid)

I'll keep an eye out for a secondhand one., as i did read some good reviews on them last night after reading you post. 

I will go and have a look at Yeehaa at Tony's JM Ocean Devil stick bait suggestion as i was going their to get some new braid for this reel, should get it serviced at  the same time

I use varivas....find its good value and casts well......then it depends on the length....the shorter it is the longer the cast(couple of winds on the reel plus lure hangin down one third of your rod would be fine).......Dont right off your set up until you have at least tried the appropriate leader with either an fg knot or a short pr.......If you dont like it then....fair enough look to change something but give your rod a fair chance first.....you dressed it wrong.

Thats true....i would have thought a sw5000 would hold more line than that.

Your probably right....it just sounds like a whole load is going out.....I got a 22.5 kg King off the rocks with a 6500(only two thirds full of ugly mono)..That reel really screams when line is being pulled too...It helped, he took the piper at my feet but i reckon he went out about 40 metres and stayed around that region for most of the fight.....back and forth.Luckily for me,there wasnt much foul around.
