Subject: Stella 5000SW Popper/Stickbaiting setup.

I've got a Stella 5000SW (Max drag 13KG) with 200mtr 30lb sun line cast away and have it sitting on a Shimano Terez 15-30lb fast spin rod, which i setup for a quick throw at the Kings, while i took my girl jigging up at channel island a week ago.

didn't hook anything on it, as i spent too much time softbaiting with my Yeehaa 703/Stella 3000FD setup

But with the time i did spend on it, i found this setup didn't cast that well as the rod is too stiff (casting 138gm waxwings and sebile shads), and the 80lb Yo Zuri fluorocarbon was a bit to heavy. (might look at a softer leader)

So, what i am thinking is that i should look at getting another rod to suit ( maybe a dual propose popper/stickbait rod such as Caranx Kaibutsu or ??? something cheaper, would be good), and i can fit about 200mtr of PE3, (i'm thinking YGK casting PE3 or Varivas SMP PE3 (both are around 47-50lb) and in theory i should be able to apply 7-8kg of drag, which is 1/3 of the breaking strain.

I know this isn't a ideal sized reel, but with a shoulder injury, and being a Paraplegic in a wheelchair. It is lighter and easier on the shoulder, and if i like it then maybe i can look at a 8-10SW new black stella once they are released.

What do you think about the setup, it will be a lighter setup, with the limitations of the 200 mtr PE3 and the useable lower drag of the Stella, but in theory it should be fight, like softbaiting on light gear?

what do you think, rod suggestions?

Cheers,

smith GTK-74PG would be a sweet match for the Stella5000.

Does look like a nice rod for the 5000, but can you still get them here?, don't see any Smith rods on Yeehaa's site anymore.

we have a new jigging master ocean devil light stick bait rod just arrived. very good action for stella 5000. very close action to the smith GTK and at very good price too.
you should pop in and have a look at this rod~Big smile
PS: also to improve you casting, your could use Varivas 100lb casting leader or 100lb prosele cast leader. those two leaders are the best casting leaders for popping and stick baiting in this world at moment

Think a 5000 shim size and a kaibutsu pencil stick going to be a bit unbalanced. Reckon what you have got is more suited, although a bit more length would help, but extra length could be an issue casting from a wheel chair. As Yee suggests, a nice supple leader is going to be a whole lot better for casting. Heavy fluoro sucks for casting. I've got Varivas and JM monster leaders and find the JM even cheaper, thinner and more supple than Varivas.

I wouldn't worry about that old school mantra of 1/3 drag to line weight when it comes to PE, just dial it up and go hard.

Could also upgrade to a 6000 size spool to give you a bit more capacity and use the 5000 as a spare?...

How many times are you going to have a kingi run 200 mtrs of braid out while fishing at channel island ? The fish will bust you on the reef before 80 mtrs is off the reel..fishing in 100 mtrs deep you wont get 200 mtrs off the reel

of2fish, what happens after you loose 80m off the reel on a big run? doesn't leave you with much.

Fishmad1:

I looked at getting the 6000SW spool from OS to get extra line, but it wasn't huge increase i though it would be, and the spool was going to be around $330 delivered. (i'd rather spend more $ on some good braid)

Fish i:

After looking at the other rod options and the rating on the kaibutsu, it properly would be unbalanced, i was just looking at that, so if i upgraded to a SW8000-10000, i wouldn't have to get another rod. The other two rod options suggested (Smith & JM) look good for this reel. and i think the extra length of the rod would help casting and yes i would look at the softer leader, i only put the 80lb Flouro on as thats all i had at the time, and i did notice it struggling though the guides on the Terez.

Of2fsh and Blindspot:

I was concerned about the lack of length (200mtr isn't a huge amount), but i the way i looked at it, was that i would properly get busted of at the reef as Of2fish said, before i got spooled and it isn't that deep up at Channel, can only give it ago and see what happens.

I should Note its just a reel i had sitting here that i don't normally use, i set it up for Barra fishing back in QLD, and i might as well use for something here, and  if i like it, and can physically do it, then i'll look at a better setup.

I'll keep an eye out for a secondhand one., as i did read some good reviews on them last night after reading you post.

I will go and have a look at Yeehaa at Tony's JM Ocean Devil stick bait suggestion as i was going their to get some new braid for this reel, should get it serviced at  the same time

I have fished a GTK 74pg for the last 2 years. its an exellent match for the 5000sw it casts a mile and is very forgiving on the angler. Great choice in my opinion and worth every dollar it costs!!

You mentioned this set up didnt cast so well......the flouro leader (as mentioned) was the cause of that......what length was your leader?,........In order of cost/quailty
black magic supple trace(nothing wrong with it)
varivas(thin for its line weight)
proselle
I use varivas....find its good value and casts well......then it depends on the length....the shorter it is the longer the cast(couple of winds on the reel plus lure hangin down one third of your rod would be fine).......Dont right off your set up until you have at least tried the appropriate leader with either an fg knot or a short pr.......If you dont like it then....fair enough look to change something but give your rod a fair chance first.....you dressed it wrong.Wink

Thats true....i would have thought a sw5000 would hold more line than that.

Have caught everything from sailfish, Tarpon, Roosters, amberjacks, Big snaps, mahi, YFT, various trevally's kings and more. running PE4 on a GTK...line capacity has never been an issue. Great setup, recommend the GTK.

I think alot of people over estimate how much line a fish actually takes in its initial runs,10's of meters not 100's of meters IMO.

I think my best fish on topwater gear Kings,GT's and YFT would have all taken 10m - 15m if they were lucky in any one run.

Your probably right....it just sounds like a whole load is going outLOL.....I got a 22.5 kg King off the rocks with a 6500(only two thirds full of ugly mono)..That reel really screams when line is being pulled too...It helped, he took the piper at my feet but i reckon he went out about 40 metres and stayed around that region for most of the fight.....back and forth.Luckily for me,there wasnt much foul around.

Smith GTK 77SJH if you are using stickbaits - softer tip than the 74PG so will swim baits better.

The 77sjh is far more suited to pe5 and an 8000sw than pe3 and the 5000sw.

The 77SJH is rated for 110g lures, the 74PG 130g.......it also has a softer action than the 74PG.

Mark i have fished both and the lure weights are different but not noticable BUT the 77sjh has more backbone and is rated PE5 whereas the 74pg is rated PE4 . Have you fished both!Ying Yang
