Seems there may be a little interest in this build so thought i'd do a build thread.
Boat is an 18 ft Centre Console, glass/ply/glass composite construction using the stitch and tape method.

Website link here - http://www.bowdidgemarinedesigns.com/Bowdidge_Marine_Designs_1/Sea_Strike_18.html

Received Plans last week - very impressed with the detail and easy to follow instructions.

Oooh, I very excite

Strongback assembled.

Bulkheads being marked out and cut.

The Help - good paper weight

Will be an interesting thread, I am looking to make supervise my young fellas make one of their smaller models over the winter period. Have you done a buget costing for your build?

Glassed up hull should be around $5500 in materials (ply, resin, glass, fairing/filler powders). Havent looked into paint costs yet.
Progress has been slow as ive been waiting on a ply order - its all go now though so should have most of the bulkheads cut out by the end of this week.

Not full size but easy to follow. Most cutting lines are straight also so marking out isn't to difficult.

Hey MarkE ,
what type of resigns are you going to use , 2:1 epoxy stuff like "Bote` coat" or normal fiberglassing resigns ?

Also are you going with that drop in transom design thing on the stern ?
Looks like it`s for tilting the engine back , maybe move it forward a bit and make it solid , with live bait tanks !

Not quite sure what you mean by 'drop in transom' ? .....Theres a heap of underfloor storage available for kill/livebait tanks.

Im using West System Epoxy resin 5:1

Looks like a thin bit right in front of the engine . I presume you remove it so the engine can tilt all the way up ?
Geez I better have another look at that site and make sure I`m got the same boat in mind !!
Wouldn`t be the first time I`ve cocked things up !

So it looks like a perment thin bit , just to give clearance for the engine ?

Nothing needs removing to tilt the engine up as far as im aware - youre not talking about the transom door/Washboard are you?

Mark is still trying to translate your code Zambesi.

I thought the numbers refererred to the distances between cable ties....but then got stuck on the letters. I thought they could be Welsh, but then your name is Zambesi????

Looks great, that hard chine should keep the spray down as well.

Are you going to finish it as a centre console? Or cabin?

What sort of glue are you using to tack everything together? Is it a commercial glue or are you adding something (wood flour or similar) to epoxy? Will you tape the seams than cloth over the whole hull?

Sorry for all the questions, I want to build one some day soon. Need to send the missus back to work first.

Looking very fine Mark. Love to watch these projects. Are the sheets secured to the bulkheads and longitudinals with any temporary fastenings (couldn't spot any in the pics) or are they just glued?

Slowly chipping away still. Have finally managed to fit the shear planks, currently inside the hull finger filleting epoxy to join bulkheads and longitudinals to the bottom plates and topsides - not a fun job I can assure you :(

Centre console mate - im a fair weather fisherman [D]
Im using West system Epoxy, you can buy filler and fairing powders to thicken it up. Seams are taped on the inside, outside is just overlapped on the chines and keel.

It a bit smaller than yours, have gone for the "Bateau - Flat Skiff 12". Project Brief - is for my two boys to make their first boat (going to try and let them do it all) and be able to use the 2 HP motor to get out and play.

Not optional, although I think the hull would still perform fine without them.

Great website right there, thanks Don.  Was a surprise to see my mistress featured too, along with another old photo that I didn't know existed.  I must get onto updating the diaries with the happenings over the past summer....

How come the strakes are not put on first before the glass. or is this so you can do the rest of the glassing as one piece

The only reason I can think of is that if the strakes were damaged the water wouldn't get into the hull proper. The strakes will have a layer of 450g DB over them also so its going to be a very strong hull :)

Also makes it a lot easier to glass the hull due to the fact you dont have all sorts of corners to go over. if you tried to glass over the whole lot you have air bubblesand bridges in the glass everywhere to chase out.

Very slow progress as of late, work and cold winter days have slowed things down...
I have finished the strakes though, just need to glass them and we're all set for the fun that is Fairing  :D  :D

^ so true, downside is it takes a bit longer for the fairing compound to go off.

Strakes glassed...

Hey Mark - did you consider laying a couple of strips of Kevlar on the keel? If you ever go near the beach you might appreciate it.

Thanks guys :)

David - I had actually thought about that funnily enough but figured im going to be really careful if its ever run up on to the beach anyway. If the worse did happen its a lot easier repairing glass as apposed to Kevlar...
