Hello,

has someone tried fishing on Rangitopuni Stream / Riverhead River? What kind of fish could I expect there?

I should think you could expect flounder, mullet, eals and maybe the odd snapper, but it is along way up there from the sea. I have never fished it myself, too many other spots around.
All the best.

I used to catch large parore in brackish water under the road bridge just upstream. Wait until the tide is going out and throw bread into the turbulent water under the bridge. The parore come to the surface and eat it. You then drift a small piece down with a hook in it. Great fun and a great fight in that current.

Upstream the river is infested with koi carp. There are some very large ones there. However, you have to look closely as many of them have lost the koi carp colour and are back to a more natural brown. They can be difficult to view in the peaty water.

The locals at Riverhead reckon that snapper and kahawai can be caught in the big hole behind the pub. Never tried it but certainly looked deep enough to have good quality saltwater in it through both tides.
