Excuse my ignorance here but what is the difference between Major Bite/Minor Bite, when there is another key for Excellent/Good/Average/Fair/Poor? |

I had the same query as Silverdale above. Did a search of the forum and thought 'great someone's done the work for me' when I found this thread. - Alas he got no replies... Anyone able to advise how the chart works please? (I moved the cursor around ok). Thanks.

If ione fishes by bite times , then takes into account weather windows.. throw in work and family commitments Forget fishing and take up needle point cause u may manage at most a couple days... or going by bite times.. hours a year Bite times have found very often when they end the fish also end... but so often bad times, between times some / a lot of our best fishing has been on bad days. EG u have a bad bite time day coming up.. say next wed/thurs weather window.. do you go or not? |

But bearing in mind this is newbies corner, no question is a stupid question. This thread reminds me of when I tried to teach myself as a kid how to fish from scratch. I wanted to catch any fish. Spotty or Sprat, it didn't matter, being poor without a Fisherman role model, without the interweb, without Fishing clubs or take a kid fishing programs, all that was left to me was old school books from the local public library. When you read expert accounts of how to fish...as a novice you are inclined to miss the context and the weighting of importance...because primarily...Fishing Authors, like all fishermen, are story tellers. For example, i read an old book by Ray Dougue, the section on how to catch Kahawai would have you believe that they are so abundant that they would leap on your hook anywhere that there is Ocean. Ray was big on using flies for Kahawai. Ray was not big on explaining that he deployed them from a boat. As a Kid I tried fly fishing from the Manakau shore line without result over four years lol. Anyway I digress. No one gives a shoot about bite times in the real world of experienced fishing folks, they are nice to knows and not essentials. Still, if you are fussed enough to go into that level of detail, then you are a true fisherman in the making, one day you will be so good you won't care. |

For us the 1st thing is ID the next weather wind, which with modern data and forecasts ar reliable 5 to 6 days out.. maybe moving 4 to 8 hrs, but 2/ 3 days out usually spot on. Next tides and currents...between the current direction and tide times basically determines when/where you are going to fish and how.. Then Season combined with above tides current as where to go and depth.. depths may change as tide changes also.. ie from 3 to 6m to 20 to 45m... or when to hit the reefs or the shell fish / crab beds near by. Then last bite times...very often this will determine which tide you are going to catch.. a early or late start.. sometimes There is not one single magic 'pill'.. but a combination of many factors. And that is where keeping notes, doing 'homework' .. throw historical information you have kept in. Then presto you have why the same guys always get back to the ramp with a good feed, and most (the othe 90/95%) of the "lets go fishing TODAY' cause looks good weather" at 9 or 10 am.. get to the ramp and have to wait for the tide to come in.. and park miles from the ramp. Oh yeah forgot a very important factor above.. the distance one has to walk between the ramp and trailer.. thats good boat/fishing time wasted. Mark Twain said something like " Luck is directionally proportional to the effort put in" He was not talking about the effort Tom Sawyer put in to pull a big catfish up out of the Mississippi, but rather getting to the right place at the right time |

After yesterday I have to concur. Stopped off at Hobsonville Wharf on the way home from work last evening and joined a couple of fine fellows on the ramp who were using surf-casters to fling squid out into the deep channel. (Man, they could cast!). They were very happy to chat and encouraged me to unfurl my soft-bait rod. So I did (after the spectators had dispersed) and enjoyed several hours of banter and casting practice. No 'keepers' and only baby snapper caught as well as much re-baiting by the boys. I only felt 3 bites on my Motor Oil Jerk Shad despite us being there through the primo Bite Time according to my research. AND it was a full moon, incoming tide, perfectly still weather. Arrived there at 5pm. Delightful way to pass the time. The car-park lights and a fresh-water tap made cleaning up easy before heading home at 10:30pm. - Time flies when you're having fun! The only thing I would add to your list is befriending locals , especially land based fishos....who are limited to travelling in cars to far away places in the fashion boaties seek out marks on the ocean. Otherwise your post should be a sticky of how to plan missions. |

We where out last Thursday....as son in his boat a few kms way.. 1 1 1/2 hr drift got selected limit over 40cm...we bit slower 1 or 2 off total limit. They hit everything, any soft bait, or bait.. broken soft baits, even a soft bait hook with just a little bit rubber on the top left. Then just as the bite time started...the fish went dead. Tried to excite with burely etc.. nothing Thats fishing. I have been told since, as that bite time ended, late arvo it all fired up again... |
