Can someone please enlighten me on what brand of TREBBLE the HALCO Rooster Haymakers run? Have done a wee bit of research and have found two brand types being mention 1. Mustard 2. VMC If the Mustard hooks are used then are these adequate for GTs in Aitutaki or should we be looking at changing to Owner ST66N's or VMC's? Change them Aaron to Owner st66's, they wont be top of the range and you can then be safe in knowing they will hold up -------------  www.kavemantackle.co.nz

Spent a bit more and get the owner st76....have heard of the st66 getting bent by GT'S...worth that little bit extra but still good value for money ------------- Once the idiots turn up..Im outta here...No time for Drama Queens. |

The ST76 are quite a heavy gauge, which in turn makes them harder to set. You'll have to be mindful of the extra mass on the ST76. You would have to be chasing monster GT. ST66 will be fine Aaron. ST66, ST76, Decoy Y-W77, Fisherman KG-120, GT Recorder and Vanfook CT-77 they would all get bent at some stage by someone fishing high drag or an arkwardly hooked fish. Shot boys, yeah Split rings is definately on the list. Just trying to collate a massive list of gear needed over there. Would hate to run out of gear as we will fishing multiple days in Raro off the rocks some where (waiting for Kev from Bay Fisher to inform us where they went) then we are heading to Aitutaki to jump on Mikes boat at "Black Pearl Charters". So would definately hate to loose alot of gear in Raro and miss out in Aitutaki as apparently there are a lot more GTs there than in Raro. But thanks boys for the comments. Make sure you've got gear that can cast a gooood distance. The best GT areas we went to with Mike are on the exposed sides of the island and you have to get your lure into the white stuff. Mike will get you as close as possible but he's not suicidal.
Have a good time up there - Mikes a good operator and Aitutaki is a great place. Make sure you have a day away from fishing and do a lagoon cruise - we use the yellow boat but Mike can deal with small parties

Nothing wrong with the Halco trebles and splitrings. My mate here in Tarawa only use Halcos and have never lost a fish due to gear failure. He fish them out of the box and best fish so far is 74lb GT. |

a halco popper would break before a st67 i rekin... also arron i found the hallco poppers are cheaper in raro than here!! hahah dont ask me why!! zac

VERY limited bro, heaps of halco stuff at this one stop type shop with a big still chainsaw out front, its up the hill not on the main road around island sorta by airport. they use lots of the halcos for yft over there,so seem to stock it, that was in march, but there was alot there... ask to go out with a local on his little boat man , they should be more than happy, they are very little and scary at times but you could get the chance to cast stickbaits at schools of yft at the fads even jigy jig... and if you can catch fish they will be happy as... went out with capt moko too, hes good value too.. some times keen to try new things like jigging etc, (they are prity stuck in there ways over there) zac

in my opinion, dont use the halco trebles, yes they do catch big fish at times. but i have seen several good fish lost when they bend out. aitutaki gts are hard enough to land as it is, let alone with hardware that is not up to the task. if your gear is not quality mike has casting gear to use. beco is the name of the shop mentioned, back road behind airport next to tereora college. they are out of halco poppers. i use owner rings and st66 trebles. halco roosta poppers are awesome. mike from black pearl is the man. yes more gts in aitutaki than raro. have a good trip!

Don't know how big the GTs are there, but I would go with #10 split rings and st76 hooks. I have never bent one. I have bent the big Gammies and Decoys though. If you are throwing into whitewater, it is going to be shallow. You will have to put heaps of pressure on the fish to get them into deep water. My PB was caught on a halco with an st76 and a single longline tuna hook on the back. The longline hooks for the rear are a great cheap option and they are on a welded ring which allow the hook to point up, or down and not sideways, which I think is important. Strong too. They also do less damage to the fish than a treble in the rear. Good luck and have fun. ------------- Tis better to have hooked and lost than never to have hooked at all. |

IMO a lure that is working effectively, or able to be worked effectively is going to catch you fish... Bro if your casting all day with a big faced popper that is hard to work, your going to be sapped... Scale down the size and really get it working and you will bring up fish. Not all GT's are monster sized, nor easy to catch... You may have to put in 6hrs of casting for one missed hook up or even a splash... It could be all on too! Same applies to stick-baits, I have a theory that aligns with the big GT's we are seeing caught on stick baits lately... Areas of huge currents hold big strong GT's, but these currents ripping around make the popper hard to work and ineffective. Stick baits changed the game in these areas, anglers can work them effectively for longer periods of time, the longer that baits in the water doing it's thing your % of success goes up. I do like the energy involved with popping... Take everything Aaron  Kurt (Poppin Tonga) did mention to me, that he has never caught a GT on a stick bait when fishing the fusilier schools...
