Whats the recognized scientific name for Snapper? A book I have says Pagrus auratus , while fishbase seems to prefer Chrysophrys auratus? |

Ha ha... my son did a speech at Primary school a couple of years ago about snapper... We used "chrysophrus Aratus" But looks like we were wrong??  yes / no ?We were up at Toot in the weekend.. We went for a look in the club-rooms.. and they had a trophy there... I think for the "snapper world cup" I cant remember exactly the title... but it was a pretty impressive thing in a glass case.. and it was referred to as chrysophrus Aratus" So if its Pagrus... then whats Chrysophrus? Jim |

There used to be a similar disagreement over kingfish, albeit at the species rather than genus level, with the 2 contenders being Seriola lalandi and Seriola grandis. S.lalandi is used for Amberjack, & apparently kingies are considered a sub-species of amberjack rather than a separate species, hence the current accepted name of Seriola lalandi lalandi. On such things the world turns. Interestingly, neither entry (S.grandis or S.lalandi lalandi) appears in Fishbase. Wonder if the wind has eased off yet.
