just finished uni and thinking bout taking the boat over to barrier for a few days. Looking to base ourselves around smokehouse bay to take advantage of the awesome facilities there. Since there will be 4-5 of us and we are taking a 5.5m surtees over, it would be more practical to sleep on land. Got a few questions but firstly just want to know if it is allowed  to just sleep on the beach? or is there a area set up in the bay for camping etc?
are you allowed open fires on the beach?
is there clean drinkable water at smoke house or should we bring some over?
Is there any shops within walking distance from fitzroy that sell basic food items?
Lastly how busy is the bay/facilities around late Nov-early Dec?

Cheers in advance

there's a D.O.C. camp with all ammenities just round the corner from Port Fitzroy where there's a shop & petrol. The camp was $20/head last time I stayed there per night.

yeah probably best to stay at the campground as smokehouse can be chocka if the weathers nice and its a very small area.Theres drinkable water expensive fuel a mean burger bar expensive shop f ing shocking so take what you can theres a pub up the road that my mate runs does a good hot meal and lovely place to sink a few. Staying at the campground will be a hassle with your boat oysters and mud so some sort of tender would be good.Fishing is rediculous that time of year Thumbs Up

Hi Jake, planning on doing the same thing on our Surtees 6.1.  Went to the DOC camp a couple of years ago in early December.  It was mint.  No-one else around at that time.  Pitched a tent and over-nighted there.  As onthedrop says the DOC site is not great for parking the boat as it gets really shallow.  I went in at high tide, unloaded, parked the boat in deeper water and swam ashore.

There's a walking path around the bay back to the campsite. Too easy.

Depending on weather conditions, this year was thinking about camping at Smokehouse bay if there's room.
