Anybody tried stickbaits just for Baracouta's/Cook Straight Sailfish/Snakes/  #$%&$#@#$%&^%$#@!@#$%!!!!!!!!!!! Thinking of trying to catch them on stickbaits, light tackle. Any suggested lures?

Why would you want to do that? have you not seen how much stickbaits cost. Then to attach light line would surely be a one way kamikaze trip. Suggested lure to try...Carpenter GT gamma lures work well.

why not a softbait with a wire trace? I got some on slow trolled rapalas at whangamata last month, not target species though ------------- TAS - Its a real disease |

Lol Gamma's! lol i'd need to be able to afford a gamma first. Obviously wire bite trace is a given, but surely some of the smaller lures, rapala, ocea, river2sea, etc would work. I'm figuring i would try a softbait out fit, to have some fun, not many kingis in CHCH, but never any shrotage of coutas  Guess i'm asking, what lures have people been unfortunate to get coutas on while topwater fishing?

i fished Nelson with metal jigs and had couta jumping out of the water chasing them, 30 to 60gm chrome if you can find any they work a treat... just be careful i had a rod in the rod holder and the jig swung out from the boat within a flash a couta had nailed it, that was at least 3ft from the surface, they just love anything shinny.... you can get them going like dolphins just by casting and retrieving across the surface... its not the one you hook up that normally bites you off its his mates trying to grab the other half sticking out of its mouth... so either a light wire trace or at least 100/150lb nylon trace will land a few before you need to change it again... or you could make something up out of a old knife chromed/stainless from the kitchen drill a hole front and back split rings hook what ever anything with a bit of weight to make casting easy... have fun... ------------- Thanks for everything you did for us Eric. may you rest in peace, You were one of the real legends of NZ recreational fishing |
