I'm not a salmon fisher so buy mine from the supermarket. Fresh water salmon is $23 per kg and salt water "Regal" or "King" salmon is around $33 per kg. At first I thought the fresh water salmon would be more natural until I remembered we have fresh water salmon farms too. Why the price difference? What do you prefer to eat or do you catch your own salmon? I do worry about the additives in salmon feed to give a more orange colour (carcinogenic?) and the ethics of salmon farming. ------------- Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day.............Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat all day drinking beer, |

An interesting subject for discussion Karen but can but wonder how many of us are sufficiently well informed on the subject to give a qualified opinion?
Personally I share your concern about the contents of the pellets fed to the caged fish in the hydro canal hatcheries however am not aware of the procedure of raising their sw cousins
for the table. Salmon in their natural state of course are andromonous ( ie spend time in both
salt & fresh water ) so presumably a similar process should produce a more natural & therefore a healthier product,
Maybe it could be likened to cage raised chickens ( best not to even think about what they are fed} opposed to free range corn fed chickens.
No contest when it comes to taste & nutrition ....... BUT ........ how many of us are prepared to
pay a substantial premium for the superior product?

You guys need to get down to the Canterbury rivers to try some of the real stuff. IMHO, wild fish that have been feeding up on krill leave both varieties of farmed stuff for dead. There really is no comparison. Buggar. now I'm getting homesick

I was once a Slmon fisherman and all my family still are, pretty good ones too. In my opinion there is no substitute for wild salmon. They have quite a different taste compared to the farmed ones. However given that I once filleted and then battered some of a 30lb salmon (as in fish n chips battered), my taste buds might be a little off Pickled and then cold smoked is the way to go ------------- If you can go home and pull a $100 bill out , and flush it down the toilet, and if that doesn't bother you, then go ahead and buy a boat |
