Looking at a 4wd and the terrano is looking around my budget. What are your thoughts on the petrols and how are they exonomically? Is the 3L as good as the 3.3L or no real difference? Would a petrol be better than a 2.7L D. Any help appreciated. Thanks

Have a 2.7 td and overall its been a good wagon. Had a few mechanical issues over the years but what dosent.
Only thing that I have heard on the petrols were they were a bit thirsty but any larger 4x4 is.

I have owned both, petrols are a bit thirsty but lower maintainance costs, good strong wagons, hard to find good clean examples now.
------------- 404. That’s an error. That’s all we know.

Thanks for the info guys. Would the petrol costs out weigh the deisel and road user charges?

i paid $2k for my petrol terrano auto, at the time the minimum price of the 2.7l diesel was about $5k.
that $3k difference accounts for a lot of petrol.
just comparing fuel costs (napkin math): petrol 91 - $2.10 diesel - $1.50 difference $0.60 per litre so $3000 = 5000 litres of fuel before the petrol starts costing more (60l tank = 803 full tanks)

i have a 96 3.2 td my parents have a 97 3.2 td and a 97 3.3 petrol and to be honest the petrol is cheaper when all is factored in with servicing ,ruc and economy , for my work run it cost me $8.25 round trip (including ruc) and the petrol is $7.90 round trip (my work run has a mix of high way and city)

I have a 97 petrol terrano, 3.3l model. Did a round 300km trip last weekend which cost $100 in petrol.

I've got a 97 3.3l petrol terrano, and with a couple of mods, I'm getting about 300km to $80 of petrol, about 12-13litres per 100k's.. BUT that is mainly on the motorway, and it goes all up the cr*p when it comes to towing 2tonne of boat! However, after driving a 2.7 diesel, I wouldn't get one (and didn't) and the 3.2's are rare and rather expensive in relation to the petrol.. (I got mine for 3.5k, equivilant 3.2diesel over 6k)

Can I ask what mods you have done to yours?

Hey Lazybones, The biggest mod I've done in regards to fuel economy, is fitting Free Wheeling Hubs to the front. The cold air intake has done a little bit as well. (all up have spent about $300)

I just bought a 94 v6 petrol terrano auto as a hack to tow boat and work wagon etc.. goe,s great but definately a guzzler. just had it up on the hoists for service and is surprisingly clean no rust. only cost 3k, had new water pump and cam belt prior to purchase and also got lift kit at rear plus new chunky feet on it. Real comfy to drive i like it better than my 05 ford courier. added bonus is under the rear seats are rust free which i,ve heard are a problem with these models. just need to take for a transmission flush as the kickback is delayed somewhat and she likes to rev.

| Totally agree with the highlighted comments above. I had the same model for a few years and while it was great to drive - especially on a long trip, the economy left a lot to be desired, because as you have said they do like to be caned. For example, a full tank would get me from Takanini to Palmerston North (just) whereas the Holden Berlina 3.6 V6 etec I now have will get me to Palmy and back to Taupo no problems at all.

Hi ninja, I am curious as to how many kms you would do for those prices. I do the same sort of traveling with motorway and residential traffic. I do around 45-50kms a day.
