Hmm was thinking that early next year to upgrade my RayL760 that the GPS antenna is broken...could be on the cards?? just gotta rob a National bank

Yea they are quite different and add ALOT to the performance of your unit. There are 2 basic differences:
Choosing the right transducer is key to getting the most out of your unit, after all its what sends the signals out and receives them. At the end of the day you can spend as much as you like on the headunit but if you don't match it with a transducer that is in-line with what it is capable of, you will only ever be limiting yourself. For the difference of $100 to upgrade to the Airmar, it's worth its weight in gold. Hope that helps.

What do I need to spend to swap existing Lowrance off of the back to an Airmar (I have HDS10 1st Gen)??

You won't NEED one.... but it will definitely increase the performance of your unit. Whether you have a gen1, gen2 or a touch screen unit. Yea.. paddle wheels are a bit limited. The unit will use GPS speed anyway, much more accurate!
