New little 50g bait that is ready for real world testing...Spent some time this morning testing some changes and its all good!

This bait has been created from the success of it's 100g big brother, the lure has been scaled down and swims great. Just like it's big bro it is made to swim single hooks, in the photo it is "bakered" using SJ41 7/0 hooks...

In all honesty I created this lure out of selfishness, down here in Hawke Bay we can get plagued by "rat" size YTK... so to keep it sporting light tackle is where it is at! Bring on Summer!

Also going out for testing is the big bigger brother... Pictured is the 50g and the 190g...

Red Hunter, keep an eye on the mail box... The 50g is coming your way for testing on GT's! ( Ian is my light tackle GT hunter )

Wow , Thanks Sam , I am getting ready for the season at the moment , I have United Composites designing me a light popping  blank , and I was going to ask you about smaller stick baits , our run of Queenfish has just started and I have the rod to test the stick bait out , they are a large fish at this time of year .

              Thanks  Ian

Here's a better shot of the little fulla in battle dress...

Some will notice that I use insulation tape for the baker rig... I have been playing with this for a while now and I think it has enough merit for me to go ahead and weld some SJ41's together...I don't have a TIG welder so I will track something down and give it a go. Any corrosion coating will be lost but the SJ41's aren't that flash at not rusting... Silicone or CRC etc...after each excursion should see the weld not rusting for a while...well maybe...

Using a cable tie is cool but I think it can cause the hooks to skew in the water from the drag it creates, this has more impact on these little lures IMO.

Here's a question... How are you lot constructing baker rig belly hooks?

Ian, Sounds cool man.. you are spoilt when it comes to fish that take lures so readily! Make sure you try any hook combination you can think of and let me know Wink

How about "heat shrink" Sam? I havn't tried but at a guess would be stiffer than the tape, and would last longer. Maybe like an Araldite epoxy before covering with heat shrink. Won't compramise metal coating either...just a thought

I had thought of wrapping the hooks with a light gauge wire then applying epoxy... Swiss/Finnish lure builders add epoxy to their trebles for ballast...

I was thinking a weld because of the strength factor... I can see everything else getting mangled...

Sam , with the little one , I would not worry about 2 hooks off th belly , I will only run a single off the belly , as it will get swallowed in there big gobs any way .

I've only ever used insulation tape. I was shown by a mate from the states, it was explained to me that they prefer them taped as opposed to rigid so if the fish gets both hooks dug in that they can flex rather than lever against each other. I've never used anything other than tape so can't really comment to if the thinking behind it is correct or not... But it works taped so I've not found a need to change

Like the shrink rap idea -awesome I'm going to that - must be better then expensive dangerous trebles.

Hi Sam, Have you tried binding the hooks with light copper wire then soldering them - I'm sure they will be string enough then.

Again, Nice work Sam.  I have had some of my best luck with small stickbaits.  I believe that having a variety of sizes is best.

With the Baker rig, I think it is best to not tie the hooks together too strongly, i.e. weld/solder.  I believe one of the reasons for them breaking a part when a fish strikes is that you are then fighting the fish on a single hook.  If you weld them together, then you may end up with some of the same weird forces on the 2 that make trebles weaker than singles.  Just something to ponder.

I gave one of your lures that you left me to a Japanese angler that is here filming a TV show.  His name is Kei Hiramatsu.  Your stuff is highly worthy of their attention.  I expect to see a great pic of a capture with that lure soon.

Tis better to have hooked and lost than never to have hooked at all.

Thanks for all the input guys...

Hi Kurt,

I'm now thinking the same thing, I don't want a rigid connection... Guess tape it is for a slim/streamline connection that is easily repaired.

I still have to get those other lures to you to test the new wiring... Will chase this up and I will be in contact. Hopefully Kei san does just that and puts it to good use Thumbs Up

Hmm I also have something in the pipeline that you will like but my lips are sealed...Wee way off yet.

Aloha

Instead of tape could you use a bit of heat shrink tube, maybe get a diameter that shrinks down firm without being really tight.  There's still some flexibility there once force is applied but is reasonably rigid until you start applying force.  Just a thought!

But then I would have to carry heat shrink and a benzo torch on the boat... I like the idea but probably not practical for myself, take enough crap out there as it is LOL

Sam , I really don't think the little fella needs 2 belly hooks , I run a single on your small poppers , and at that size there is no problems with hook ups , and by the way I am thinking Barra ?

Ian, I am heading down this track... I will need to get some smaller inline hooks. Like you mentioned the size of these lures nearly always has the fish inhaling it and once in it's gob hook ups happen.

Stick baiting for Barra... I want to be in on this Thumbs Up

Been scratching away at some wood getting another test sample ready... This is going to Ben @ Nomad, start of the season last year saw the kingies' biting the smaller lures up top; so I'm wanting to get this up there for testing ASAP... Ben tells me she's just around the corner...

Here's some photo's of the foil process...And a little sneak peak of the bait...

God dam wrinkles!!

About an hour later, all smoothed out...

Another 20minutes to add some scale texture...Ready for epoxy...
