Just wondering how you guys fish for salmon in the salt water? Here in the US Pacific NW we use various lures. Spoons (Cop Car pattern, which is Black and White) or Army Truck (Which is green tan and red) Ace High Fly's and Tomic Plugs. The most common is a soft plastic squid we call a "hoochie" Usually pull this behind a Flasher and run it on a downrigger. Also, fresh herring, cut plug is always a good Go To, but your prone to have to beat off the dog fish (sharks) with bait.
How are your salmon stocks doing? Are you getting pretty good runs? Managment of our stocks here is pretty dismal. Add to that the commercial and Native netting and it can be pretty discouraging. Yet, we are still able to get some good table fare if we put in the time. ------------- "Forgivness is between them and God. My job is arrange the meeting." |

| Hi BW, welcome to the site. I'm not a salmon fisherman but I've spent a couple of hours watching. Hex spinners at river mouths and trolling 'herrings' is what I've seen. hopefully we'll hear from someone who has actually done it! |

| Hi Bay Wolf, I spend most of the summer months chasing salmon in the Canterbury/South Canterbury rivers. I don't know whether anyone fishes for them at sea, mostly because I believe they are very hard to find. A lot of people do fish the surf around the river mouths when the fish are getting ready to come through. Last season was my third one chasing these awesome fish and for the 200-300 hours I put in I only hooked (and lost) one in the Rakaia river. It can be a frustrating sport ! |

Thanks Mad, I was starting to think it was a trade secret or such! I would think fishing for them in the salt at the front of the rivers would be pretty productive, as they stack up there waiting to run. Do you have a pretty healthy population of salmon in your rivers? I've seen some info on the trout fishing, and that looks really good.
What sort of set up do you use in the rivers? We drift egg clusters, or a set up called corkies and yarn. These are small colored cork balls that we top with a small strand of colored yarn. Pretty effective. Most put some sort of scent on it, likle shrimp oil or anise. ------------- "Forgivness is between them and God. My job is arrange the meeting." |

Great fish mate! Our salmon fishing is restricted to the South Island, although every so often a stray gets caught in the North. As you say, at the river mouths there is a lot of fishing when the fish gather for their spawning run. I've never participated in the fishing there myself, and I haven't read much about it on this site. I'd expect there is a specialist salmon website for South Island fishos. One of our favourite lures here in NZ is called a http://www.fullonfishing.co.nz/contents/en-us/d676_Hex_Wobblers.html - hex wobbler , which is cut on an angle from a hexagonal bar of steel. They seem to only be popular in NZ/Aus. There is a bit of bait fishing for salmon down in Dunedin around the wharves, using live yellow eye mullet under a float. Good luck, and do a search for Salmon forums, I'm sure there are plenty of people keen to share ideas.

Ahab, Thanks for the info. I'm ordering a couple hex wobblers as we speak. We jig for lings and salmon in Puget Sound. These might be interesting to try out...give them something diffrent to look at anyway. Might give them a go in the open salt for black sea bass as well!! I'll let you know how they work.
Mad, Cool. I too hope know one gets upset. Gonna check out the sights for some info on NZ salmon.

Hi fishing for salmon in port chalmers Dunedin is usaully good round march , hex spinners can be used and a form of down rigger or vane produces results, persistance pays off |
