Be careful with it, i personally don't like them and would have kept saving for a .308 or similar. Remember after each shot there is another in the chamber ready to go,seems obvious but in the heat of the moment easily overlooked. When unloading ALWAYS check the breech, (look and feel) there was a guy shot in the ass in the Oamaru hut by someone playing with an SKS from memory. At least with a bolt action everyone can see when the bolt is open

reliable as. They kill people at 250M+ depends what type of terrain your hunting thick bush etc cheap as chips to feed. as for its semi auto capabilities a bit of common sense is needed (like anything really) put a few boxes through her at different ranges so you know whats up and whats not...did you get the 16inch barrel or the 20 inch becoz the 16 inch is a bit noisy + you loose a bit of velocity. I reckon they are pretty underated really $400-$500 you cant go wrong dosnt matter what rifle you get they all gonna knock down game aye.
hope that helps :)

If it was a Guns.h.i.t.t.y package, throw the scope away and get a better one from the $2 shop. Most stuff guncity branded is either knockoff chinese junk or plain ole chinese junk, both overpriced. Otherwise not bad guns for the money.I had one but wouldnt let the kids use it due to being semi auto. You will get some looks and sly comments from hunters at times.(Normally the T3 7mm08 carrying Tryin-hard-to-Look-the-part crowd). But they drop deer/goats fine so long as you get used to the gun, just like most guns i guess. Plenty of upgrades for them. Found around 150 metres was proly max solid hitting range for reds. Enjoy.

I have several of the $400 for new, Baikals in .223, 243 and 762.39. Just the one stock though and change the calibres as i want. Brilliant guns for the money if you like single shot.Get a 12 guage barrel as well, and its a very versatile gun. I also bought one of the norinco Jw103 bolt actions in 7.62x39 and after putting 50 rounds through it and hand polishing a few of the parts its a damn good knock around gun. GC has them for $500 However,if you follow this link for the package version of them, and decide to go with NO scope or rings, they are only $350!! a bargain. ( which is how i got mine). http://www.guncity.co.nz/7.62x39-norinco-bush-ranger-rifle-scoped-package-xidp118136.html - http://www.guncity.co.nz/7.62x39-norinco-bush-ranger-rifle-scoped-package-xidp118136.html Though for a good first or sec rifle i seriously doubt you could go past this http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=456829385 - http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=456829385 Brilliant calibre and i would certainly buy it myself if i hadnt already got 2 in this calibre. Almost no range limit and will drop whatever you like with pinpoint accuracy and next to no recoil. Just saying.

Semi auto's should be banned in the nz bush. no place for them when animal hunting,To easy to forget they are always loaded when the shooting starts. and lets face it people have a habit of sticking there finger on the triggers on any rifle.. TEFAIIIL that's my law i stick to it.... but they are so noice to shoot at the range :)

Well I guess you won't be coming hunting with me cause i only have semi autos and have done for last 20 years. SKS work OK, shoot what you have. If it goes bang and the deer falls over it will do. As long as you are safety concious you will be fine, hunters seem to get their nickers in a bunch when talking about semi autos!

Funny I was taught way back when you only put your finger "inside" the trigger guard when you are "almost" ready to shoot and on the trigger only when 100% on target. When I was a nipper my dad painted a black spot just above the trigger and said " unless you are actually shooting at something that's where your trigger finger lives, I see it inside the guard and you aren't shooting I'll remove the finger" (ah good old no PC days).

Semis vs bolt action. it always comes down to safety really. I have seen untold numbers of people with bolt action rifles( wouldnt call them hunters as i understand the meaning)who load the mag fully plus one up the spout at full cock then walk around with the safety on. F that. I prefer to Squeeze the trigger, close the bolt, then put the mag in and thats how i stalk untill i am ready to shoot. Once shot i will leave the bolt closed on the empty round untill i need to shoot again.if i dont fire i eject the round, top mag up and, repeat. Its something i do almost without thinking about it. Once ive shot my semi i will take the mag out and do the same thing. This is how i was taught and having had a guy walking behind me whos gun was loaded plus one up the spout and safety on,then tripped and put a round tween my legs.. its how my kids are taught as well. Might seem over cautious to some but i have 4 kids watching amd imitating me a lot and actions will speak louder than 'Do as i say not as i do'.

Your on to it aye :) if you did a survey on how many people took the mag out of a semi after one or two shots on a 10 round mag i bet you would have .1% :) take a look at ya mates and there mates when out on a hunt one day, see if they have there finger on the trigger...it's human nature to put it there. even i did till it was drummed outa me. did you tell the guy off for almost giving you a new bung hole?

To be honest,by the time i was at the stage of being able to coherently form words his rifle barrel was bent and the stock had somehow fallen off. I was tailend charlie of a group of trampers and he was the first of a group of 3 hunters following us in. Only one of the mugs had a licence and it was all 3's first hunt ever. If you ever make it to Daleys flat hut, look closely at the poker used for the fire.

It's a little bit BS saying semi's are more unsafe than bolt guns, it only takes one round to kill ya own mate and an idiot with a bolt gun is going to be just as bad with a semi and vice-versa.
As far as the 'safety catch' debate, I have been known to rely on the 3-position Mauser 'flag' safety when hunting, as that places a chunk of steel between the cocking piece and the chambered round. I don't rely on anything else that is also called a 'safety catch', as most just stop you from being able to pull the trigger with one finger. I have seen some that a strong guy can bend and still discharge the firearm even with the trigger block closed...
The trigger blocking mechanism could still release and fire if it is dropped with the trigger block closed, which it can't with the Mauser type. Some overly anal-retentive types get their knickers in a twist at that, saying the sky will fall and the Mayan calender will end 6 months early but they are FOS...
That is the let-down of the SKS type rifles from my limited experience with them, the safety only prevents trigger movement and the action is especially noisy to operate due to the wide tolerances on parts. When stalking you basically have to carry the thing with a round chambered due to the noise of the action when loading, and then you have a safety catch in name only. You will have to be especially careful to always point in a safe direction, even during and after a fall for that reason.
Also, be careful which ammo you use as there has been some reports of certain versions not liking softer-primered sporting style ammo and doing bad things. Stick with either surplus or steel case hunting ammo and you should be right...

I have one and recommend it, have shot everything from cattle to bunnies with it was great for bomb ups on goats, shot deer chamois and alsorts, not long ago got another one in synthetic lots of fun they are. Like any rifle treat it as loaded all the time.

The guy i got it off said its synthetic monte carlo stock.... I pulled it apart after i watched sks slam firing on youtube, they all said to make sure the firing pin rattles when you shake it or its dirty and it needs a clean..but yea theres a bit of play between the stock and the rest.. its kinda dodgy how easy they come apart

Hate the synthetic stocked short barreled jobbies as they often tend to make even a lightish recoil worse than it should be. 6.5x55 has a light recoil for a 600 metre plus capable calibre.About par kickwise(or lack of kick) with a .243 i have to say. But then again, after i got a 9.3x62 a few years back i dont really notice recoil in lighter calibres ( It's got a mans recoil ,the 12 yr old wont even hold it if its got a round chambered anymore, the wuss.)

Have always wondered why alot of the people who get there nickers in a twist about a semi in the bush will also be using a semi auto shotty chasing roosters or ducks.
Treat every gun as loaded, does not matter how it reloads! If your not safe enough to trust with a semi the your not safe enough to trust with a bolt gun.
