I would like to propose a new section for the walk a bout forum-- Distance casting, this is a growing sport in NZ/Australia, there are alot of up and coming and present distance casters on this forum that I;m sure would be happy to help and pass on there information to help others, this would be a good way of finding out about technical side of things ,products and the club comps and open days around NZ. There is alot more to distance casting then just throwing a sinker on the line and going for it. So if you guys are interested in this please comment on this and I'm sure the mods may take note.

My castings improve over the last 6 or so months slightly. But I wouldn't mind a few more tips etc on how to increase distance

The otg cast is the basis of all power casts.
Dave Mewburn has recorded casts over 250m with otg casts. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9kDRKIr6jA

fixed- it is a good rod, every one can do the Over Head Thump pretty standard cast, some just need to be showen how to do it correctly.
On that note there is a casting day being held this weekend at Mainfeild Race Track ,Feilding, so come along on Sunday at 9 am with your rods and reels, alot of the guys would be more than happy to help with casting, some times it only takes 15 minutes to learn the correct why to do things then practice, some guys have achieved an extra 20-40 meters

I will arrange a few demonstration events around the country if people are interested, willing to help people learn to cast with and with out baits and to get max distance out of the gear you use and show a few people some of the specialist gear that is used by the top casters in NZ.

I watched a video of the pendulum cast a few years ago and it has found its way into my surf and lure spinning casting techniques. While some of these 200m + casts with long rods over grass are super impressive it's also important to recognise other forms of distance casting. For example the guys that regularly throw over 120m with a 10ft rod, 85gram lure and a reel with a drag system that is up to the task of stopping 30Kg tunas.
Love the sport, always working on the technique!

Good idea for the forum.Would be a useful addition.
Nope dont use tapered leaders. Lose too many too snags...
Waiting for the unhealing hole on the side of my finger to **** off. Keeps getting burned out by line (Too lazy to use the cannon)
Also: The Sonik dealt to a good sized pannie last night.

tapered leaders are too expensive to use all the time, if they don't bust off on a snag / ray / bad cast then I find they go all curly after a few missions. I just use a good quality 40-50lb line such as Plat and attach to the main line using a slim beauty. Would be worth considering for distance casting though I suppose but they'd probably need to be shortened as they're normally about 15m long and only need to be about 6.

I swear by Tapered leaders, If using a fixed spool with the right knot they preform alot better, the ones I use are UK casting std length 13 meters so no need to cut them down. on a free spool I also use them and again I find they are very good on the guilds as you dont get the knot catching on the smaller guilds, some guys use a standard shock leader that wraps around the spool 2-3 times as well. Personal I think we need to take on the UK Casting Stds in NZ so it keeps all people on the same playing field - I will post more info on this

Yep, use tapered on my 2, 4 & 6kg lines. 8kg and up don't bother as there "should" be enough stretch in the line to handle a cast I reckon. 120m with 6kg (.33 I think) 5oz at the field. Haven't measured with the 2 or 4 kg line yet. Probably drop about 20m with bait I reckon

check out this short vid of Danny Moeskops doing a pendulum cast. He has a very distinctive stance when he starts his cast where he is almost bowing. I'm guessing this is not text book style. Must work though as he is the current world record holder with a distance of 280+ m.

I have being trying out some new Tapered leaders, 10 on a spool which is good, so far they have being working well. They come in a variety of sizes as well, clear(flouro) - .20-.57, .23-.57, .26-.57, .31-.57, and hi viz red(5 on s spool) .18-.45, .20-.57, .23-.57, .26-.57Big Jim why do you cut them down???, is it because of the diameter of the line or is it because of the reel or your style of fishing?

CTS S8 Pendulum blanks could be added to your list, Tapered leaders on my fixed spool loaded with braid 15lb at the thin end keeps the knot small. Just use 50 / 60lb mono or 80lb braid on my over heads.

I learn't some of my distance casting fromJames, and I think he cut's his down so he only has three or four winds around the spool and enough line out the end for a decent cast. The whole leader is too long depending on the rod.

Casting into the wind with a freespool is a bit tricky esp when the reels are set up very very twitchy .

Hi Guys,
First post on here so a bit of a test at the same time.......so apologies if it all goes pear shaped!
Also I better just say hullo one and all, right, pleasantries over....
My two favorites are Century and Zziplex, both have been around a while and both always prove themselves well out on the field. The technology Century has available and materials, will always keep them up there with the best.
SONIK are proving themselves in the UK market, especially with their carp rod range and going by the casting capabilities of the carp rods I am interested in how the Surfcasting range will do. I am not sure as of yet, that they will prove winners as out and out Competition casting rods, but I hope they do.
The set-up I am putting together for my surfcasting in NZ is,
Shimano Ultegras (Spinning reels)
Sonik 14' Continentals
20lb fireline
65lb whiplash leader, through to mono hook lengths
Looking forward to hitting the beaches soon and possibly entering a few casting comps along the way.......

Zziplex Century and Conoflex have dominated the the casting circuits for a long time however there are also others that can be cast a long way.
Soniks have been used by a few in the uk to record casts up to 260m .
Anyfish anywhere and Anyfeild anywhere The new anyfeild blanks have been going very well with 270m casts posted. These rods may been seen in NZ soon is the rumour I am hearing .
Tyrex Rare and out of production now the French casters love these rods

Chucking a sinker around ain't much fun, unless there are fish to be caught :) Do you guy's use fake bait's? streamlined fake bait's? to see who can cast the best? cause once you add baits to lines, it changes the whole distance casting.. be interested in seeing how you guy's set up for fake real fishing sessions and who has the best cast that way...:)

I cracked out Google Maps over Petone the other day and measured out a 230m distance against the Petone Wharf, then went for a walk down there to see how far it is in comparison to how far I think I can cast... It doesn't look that far from above but looking at it up close... sheesh! I can only imagine casting that far and hearing a 'snap' as either my rod, or one of my tendons, broke :)
