This reel has me interested. Shimano tranx is a curado trini hybrid reel. They look like a giant curado and are made to fish the new big daddy waxwings. A bigger version of the waxwing lure. It looks like a cool system for our kingi fishery.
New TAS for some.

Hey mates big wax wings are available at your tackle stores as well have been available for about 2-3 months now. Shimano stockists should be able to order them in for you if not in stock!!! Same colour range as the smaller lures

You guys gonna get both PG and HG models Nomis? The HG will blow up any snapper from deepish water.

Makes me laugh at some guys on other forums going on about its 25lb of drag. Thats its max rating when I buy a reel I plan on fishing it at 2/3rds of its max ratings at the most, I don't want to be putting on constant strain on the gears. Also 25lbs of drag is jigging/gamefishing range not what the reel is built for.

check the size of the waxwings cause the biggest you get in nz is 115mm could be wrong  the biggest in US is 138 mm  the smallest in US is 68mm  4 dif sizes and you can get 16 colors

I had mine delivered today - an PG model from E-bay, with free shipping, and a free spool full of 80lb braid.
I quickly PR'd a lump of 100ld fluro on it and had a few casts with it attached to my Shakespear Uglystick - fantastic!
I tried three different weighted poppers and ended up managing a consistent 55 meters with a 150gm lure without any backlashing. I'm 64 and not a big guy at 70kgs, so I was delighted with that.
It's quite critical to make sure you match the cast control for the lure weight though.
Took me a few casts to realise how important that was, but once mastered and understood, the thing was a delight to throw.
The level wind doesn't engage on casting so if you want to centralise it in the middle of the spool before casting, wind up the lure to the desired distance from the rod end, loosen the drag right off and crank the handle to bring it in to the middle.

The fact that you can instantly retreive line as soon as the lure plops down, and not have to worry about thumbing to lay the line, is just a huge plus for this reel.

It feels nice and compact in the hand, and yet powerful, and solid.
Beautifully made, and lovely to look at, it gets a big thumbs up from me.Thumbs Up

Three lure weights all easily handled

they are awesome reels and the PG model will be in stores in the not to distant future and uploaded on our site - when trying them in store make sure you bolt them on to a rod - the ergonomics in hand change dramatically.

The Tranx 500PG are going to be hot ticket items and very versatile with massive capacity these puppies won't only be suited to topwater pursuits.....deepwater soft baiting, medium jigging, slow jigging and bottom bouncing....matched to a Terez 30-80lb OH - awesomeness personified!

Interesting how he says its not prepped ready for saltwater use ?

The drag came greased except for the disc under the main gear.  The top fiber drag is extremely thin, I could force Cal's thru the tiny pores in it with a soft bristle brush. Gears and sideplates were pretty dry definitely needs prepping for saltwater use.

I have got a Fin-nor 165 gm  5'6 marguesa-line wt 30-45 lb and have been thinking of putting on a trini 12a or curado 300 ..

have also seen the daiwa lexa i like the look of and now i see that shimano has the tranx 500 PG...

i like the 500PG

decisions,decisions

Yeah, that's a bit of a worry isn't it.
The instruction sheet says not to over grease the internals though:

Yes exactly what i was thinking swish--there must be a reason they only put so much grease in,too much can actually do more harm than good..
Just like if you overfill a car engine with too much oil etc,and other things

No, but I did ask the seller to put his wholesale price on for the declaration form for just that reason.
When it arrived customs had obviously opened the box and had a look, but there was nothing on the actual shipping document whatsoever, so not sure what happened there.

The whole transaction was done in less than a week as well, which was really pleasing.
I paid by PayPal which adds a bit extra cost to my VISA, but it's so quick and easy it's well worthwhile.

yeah had similiar experiences that fact it turns up in a week or sometimes less is great , i like the idea of paypal regardless of the cost its reassureing to know your funds are held from the seller in case of problem especially when dealing with large amounts . i think traded me is a easier to use format than ebay but man there are some bargains to be had in  the worlds biggest market place .

I had a bit more of a play with it today and learnt some valuable stuff:

My reel came with only two of it's little VBS brake weights "on", (as you can see in my photo posted above - out is "on"), so as I was still getting a few over-runs I decided to turn them all on, and see what difference it made.
Well, no matter how hard I threw, I had not a single backlash, and distance, if anything, was increased.
Every cast was perfect, and even with the cast control knob slackened right off, I couldn't get it to over-run.
So if you get one, make sure to set all your brakes to all "on", and start from there.

It's so good, I reckon this reel would be perfect for surf casting!
Could it be the best all round medium weight reel ever made?

Here's the blurb on brake weights from the instruction sheet:
