Not sure it will work but seems to be a lot of Coro reports of late in the Auckland topic and individual ones so thought Id try starting it off.

Spent Auck anniversary at Matarangi and yakked up the coast a bit. Good 6-8m viz. Maybe 10 in the real salpy areas once you got under them.
Apart from the spot that I got this guy it wasnt that fishy. He went 18.
Good numbers of crays around and they seem to be getting a bit bigger. Lots of small packys around that havent been there in the past.

Great day out from Tairua with LeatherJacket.  Up at sparrows fart and checked out the bar, wasnt breaking hard to the left so we made the call to head out in the takacat.  Headed Slipper Island way searching for Boarfish but being quite new to the area struggled.  LeatherJacket was content to continue playing with snapper so I went off for an explore.  Got buzzed by a couple of good schools of kingfish (lots of them and most were 5-10KG), wife is sick of eating them and they must have known, as one school stuck around for a good 2-3 Mins.
After a bit of weedlining finally came across 4 Boaries. Speared one (came out at just over 9KG), so  headed back to pick up LeatherJacket so he could pick one off too.  They were onto us though and had departed.
Heaps of boat traffic in the leigh from the wind there were a lot of us tucked into it!
Vis was about 12M or so at Slipper in the leigh and was still quite blue.  Lots of JD about and after nailing a few good pannies Leather Jacket managed a squid then wrapped up with a Boarie of his own.
Bar coming back in was a bit gnarlier, but managed to follow a good wave back in home.

Thumbs Up

Awesome day out, cheers Weightless. Good to meet UndieBandit at the ramp on the way back in, him and his mate had got onto the Boaries as well.

I muffed a couple of chances as some better snapper but happy to take home a good feed. I cooked up some of my boarie tonight and decided it had a slight scallop taste to it. Not bad at all, will definitely be looking for more in the future. F'n squid though, they taste good but I must remember to gut them before getting them on the boat, that ink gets everywhere.

Here's a couple of extra picks to put that Boarie into perspective. Weightless's glory shot and my string-o-death.

I saw that boarie at watchman last week. it was like a horse under the water. I guessed at the time it was 8kg plus.

Thats a nice haul

Sounds like he got around a bit!   Certainly seem to be a few about the coro area at the moment.
Felt guilty how easy it was to skewer actually, dived in behind him.  Got within 1M or so with gun out to the side, tried to fire...oops safety still on on my Riffe.... turned it off and felt like I could possibly have jabbed it without shooting (not that I was taking any chances).  Are they usually that easy to shoot, or did I catch it in a dopey mood?
Had some for dinner last night and cant believe how sweet the fillets are.  A bit chewy at this size, but yummy none the less.

I dove slipper with spearcrazy, it was nice and clean but very busy with a rod comp on. There were a heap of boaries around (we probably saw 12) i promised myself i wouldnt kill any after doing some damage to the population recently.... anyway 5 minutes later spearcrazy waves me over and demands i go down and shoot a boarie hes just fluffed and lost high in the back, so much for that promise. After that had a few good ones roll in off the sand to check me out but left them alone. Tally at the end of the day was 3 jds and a boarie for me and 2 boaries and 2 jds for him.

LeatherJacket will probably post something cover off his adventures from the day soon, but from my side yesterday was as good a dive as I have had in a while!  Took LeatherJs Senator out from Pauanui at sparrows f*rt.  Vis in Tairua / Paunui was brown nastiness so we all had fingers crossed we would get some blue out further.  Headed straight to a common pinkie spot so we could both pop our pinkie cherries.  We both managed to do this in quick succession, with the first ones taken in 10M.  They moved down to about 20M pretty quickly, so we went exploring and found another spot and continued the action.  Was near low tide so we decided to go cray hunting / snooping.  Dropped off the other 2 gents on the trip at a known cray hot spot and LeatherJ and I went for an explore a couple of bays round.  I headed inshore and Leather J went off for a snoop(he managed a good haul too so I am sure there will be pics and a write up).  Managed 10 good sized Paua which is a first in one dive for me around the coro and picked up 3 crays on the way back to the boat.  After that, I decided to mix it up and go looking for some boarfish.  Vis was 15-20M so could see bottom well, so after 10-15mins of swimming over broken sand speared the first.  Another 10-15mins found the second.  My 5th Boarfish in 3 weeks, so seem to be getting a roll on.

We wrapped up by doing a solid Kingie hunt at a few spots, but despite the huge number of mackerels and Kohis only a rat was seen.   Not much current the whole day, guess that is just how it rolls sometimes.  Saw Undie bandit at one of the pins, so wonder how he did?

All in all a productive and fun day!

As Weightless said the aim of the day was to target pinkies. It was my first time crossing the Pauanui bar and I was a little disappointed that it was flat both going out and coming back in.

At the first spot, as it was my boat I wanted to make sure it was well anchored before I jumped in. With no wind and very little current I soon overcame my concerns and headed in looking for my first Pinkie. The others had headed out behind the boat so I swam around the front to begin my search. I decided I would swim down the anchor rope to check it and then proceed along a ledge that was in shadow.  As I headed to the ledge at around 10m I see a Pinkie coming the other way. In short order I had my first Pinkie and on my first dive of the day too, good start.

The vis was a superb 15m+ so I started spotting them from the surface and soon had another one shot at about 12m. There were heap of 30-35cm snaps around which was very distracting as they would occasionally drift into the very edge of range.  With the dives feeling very comfortable I followed my last pinkie down to about 18m before I could get close enough for a shot. It was a fairly long one and I saw the flopper hadn’t gone through, there was just a half a centimetre piece of skin holding looped over the flopper. A very careful assent and I finally secured it on the surface. The drag of pulling it up sideways and trying to maintain a slow steady pace meant the surface took a long time to arrive.

A bit later in the day I set a few kina burlies in a small bay but no snaps showed up after a 30 min soak. While I was waiting though I found a few good bucks and snooped a 3kg snap from a big gut.

Here’s a shot of the snapper on my new filleting table. My wife didn’t much like me filleting on the bench and I didn’t have space for a permanent table anywhere near my hose. The answer was a table top which fits tightly over my wheelie bin. Its stable and can be moved to suit + no having to spray and wipe the bench 3 times after I’ve finished either. Just hose a quick water blast when cleaning while boat. Happy wife, happy life!

Cheers Fat Mord. If I did mine again I would make it a bit longer. An extra foot wouldn't have gone a miss. I had the same back issues as I've tried my chilli-bin lid, a kids plastic table and plywood on lawn. Mine is made out of 6x2 and 4x2. I had a piece of 7mm ply for a while but it would curl whenwet so not ideal.

Stayed at Tairua over the weekend with the intention of 3 days diving/fishing the Aldermans.
Friday was eventful weatherwise, with rain, thunder and lightning overhead on our way out. I think when the water spouts started forming did we realise high-tailing for slipper may be a better option...

Only snapped a pic as it was fading.
Slipper was nice despite conditions up top, with 10m vis at the bottom and a layer of freshwater distorting things on the surface. Used the 3 prong to try and shoot some bait for my mates, but within 10 mins of hitting the water had 3 johnnies in the boat which was a nice surprise.

Saturday was like somebody had hit a switch and summer finally had arrived.

Spent most of the day fishing before an afternoon dive. Vis was 20 meters in most places which although it was awesome, I found it difficult to get close to fish. In particular the schools of pannies milling about the place. Saw a copper moki which got 3 prongs to the brain, remembering recent discussion on the forum over their eating qualities...

Cant see too well in the pic but I think the grey colour and black flecks in the flesh put a stop to any tasting of said fish.
Later in the arvo my mate and I jumped in on a pin where the clear vis surprised us both, he managed to hit the bottom where it looked about 15m but his watch read 23.5! what a difference good vis can make. unfortunately my other mate lost his contour roam somehow (southern end of Aldies if anyone finds itWink).

Sunday was a short day out at slipper again where my mate got his first JD and I found another before heading home. Did have a pair of big (5kg?) blue moki hanging round my fin tips but decided to keep that cherry unpopped after the copper moki autopsy.

Good way to send off the summer holidays before uni starts again.

Hey guys,

have a weekend away with a few mates this weekend based in matarangi. have a boat and as we dont have much knowledge of the area we were just going to head north and explore the coast. Being such a good opportunity for some diving i dont often get i was wondering  if you could recomend any areas to focus on that'd be great? really want to make the most of the weekend, not asking for the secret spots but just dont want to look back on the weekend and realise we had been focusing on some barren areas! for the record i would say we would be intermediate spearos with one beginner amongst 4 of us. comfortable at 10-15m and enjoy the trip and experience as much as the dive so keen on a good mission!

It's this one. Seems reeeeaaaallly slow with an effective range of about half a meter... I don't know if beefing up the rubbers is a good option though as there's a bit of a bend once loaded. Still good fun though without paying hundreds.

Theres lots of good weedlines around heaps of the islands in the mercs, kingys can be taken off the points and snooping on the back. As for launching either Kuatonu or Whangapoua or Matarangi there all fairly close to one another. Travel distance is 12ish natuical miles there and back from Matarangi, but dont foreget to factor in the miles you'll be doing while your out there as well.

Posted By: Firey
Date Posted: 22 Feb 2012 at 6:21pm

If you havent boated out of Matarangi over the bar before I would sugest launching at Kuaotunu ramp. Could be a bit of swell after this blow and it is a sh it bar with no real channel. The bar and the estuary get very shallow at dead low tide.

Kuaotunu ramp is sheltered by a sea wall so not affected by the swell (unless it is big)

Don't be so hard on yourself, you've only had the boat a little while, and it's really hard to use google earth or the navionics app to work out distances.

Are you launching from whiti becasue you don't want to cross the bar?

It's a much easier trip and shorter trip to the Aldies from Tairua. Conversely, if you were going to the Mercs, go from Whiti, or better still Kuaotunu. Boats use more gas than cars

Aww isn't that nice, did he tell you how fast your boat was? Better to be in a small fast one than a big slow one.

Do people surf the back of Lil B? Was a nice looking wave out there one day when we were out there on a day with zero wind but a decent ground swell, was impressive. Is it pretty common for people to be out the back of islands chasing waves, like would you expect ot see someone else when you show up out the back of slipper?

I remember coming back from the Barrier in a big SE (very scary on my own with a load of kina), and there was an epic wave off the northern end of LB. The swell was huge that day

Had great waves there before.(LB) Lovely left hander. Jimmy Its gotta be fn huge to close out whanga and it dont need to be huge to surf the reef you reefer to.If  you leave from whiti turn left and not right as there some epic waves in them other islands if you go looking. Wink

JRDO, it's getting more common to find people with the same idea out at the islands. Some are so packed it's silly. Matakana is a circus with 12 boats on the one peak last time. Hopefully the less ventured places are still not crowded. T'was 50% of the reason of buying a boat.

Very keen to spear more of the Mercs so a reccy is in order.

The swell was huge that day
Was out at Great Barrier couple of years back and spent an afternoon watching big wave surfers on the east coast side. The surfies were coming over in private planes into Clarence. Wish we had a video those guy,s were crazy.

+1 for the navionics app on my Galaxy S2. Best $16 I ever spent, especially since I bought the SD card version 12 months earlier for $400.

I still feel a bit poncy catching up for a coffee with mates and whipping it out to plan the next mission. But it makes it a shed load easier though.

The best wave ive seen behind an island was behind mayor on tuhua reef, it was absolutley pumping barreling about 5 feet I think. We all just sat there for about 20 minutes pretending we were in the tropics, was very romantic.

best island waves Ive had would def be okiwi on GB. Manaia reef on slipper between penquin and rabbit is ok but has one rock shelf which caught me real bad. Motiti can have good days at the cave though swell direction has to be just right. red merc is the go if you can get there-epic. Surfed bare island in hawkes bay, more of a novelty though

Had a good weekend away in coro over the last few days.
Got in late friday night and was pumped to head over to mercs early in the morn, however the sea was chopping up early morning so the skipper decided half way to turn back. Not a big deal so we found a nice rock north of whangapoua and jumped in for a swim. Quite a few nice butters were taken between 4 of us, a trev and the only person without a gun got a kingy on a sling! back to matarangi for lunch and tried another dive in the afternoon for no reward!

Woke up early sunday morn to glass so the mercs was on. were a bit pushed for time as we were leaving mid afternoon so just decided to dive the south side of the island as it was our first time. We were greeted with an abundence of butterfish again and a few gernard were taken! Diving off a rocky point we were burlying up for some snaps and hunting crays when a very inquisitive bronzy stalked right up behind me when i had my head in a hole only to then turn, spook it and then see our float line which it completly mauled!

Great couple of days out diving viz around 4m on mainland and more like 5-10 at the mercs. A shame about losing a lot of nice fish on the second day but was still a great trip!

Dived the Aldermans with undiebandit and some of his mates yesterday. I shot 1 kawhai, undie slayed many fish, viz was amazing 10-20m, water was the bluest I've ever seen.  Water was warm.

JRDO can stop reading now, full account below for those who could be bothered reading it.

Weather was average being overcast with heavy rain forecast.  Anyway launched from Pauanui at 8am and powered out to Aldies.  First dive at a spot none of us had dived before, viz average about 5m.  Nothing significant seen or shot by me.  undiebandit got a trev.

Headed to another spot south of the first one and we were greated with amazing viz! Water was a deep blue and could see the sand on the bottom (20m+) from the boat!  Jumped in swam over to a rock and was surprised to see a lone pink maomoa amidst the leatherjackets and small blue maomao.  didn't look that far away so dived done and had a crack - watched in agony as the spear stopped short.  Just finished reloading when a school of ocean going kawhai came past.  Shot one.

Off to the next spot, and it wasn't long before undie has some more fish in the boat. As for me I dived straight down on a big Porae - though he was only about 2m from the end of the spear, fired and what do you know, spear pulled up short - again!  Seems the amazing viz was playing havoc with my depth perception.  Saw a JD just after i missed the porae, but he scooted off down to the weed before i could reload and shoot.  About 15m so way to deep for me to dive.

Line fisho mate had caught a few pannie snaps by this stage and we headed off to try another spot.  Sounder was lit up like a Christmas tree so we jumped in, pink maomao everywhere!  too deep for me to get of course!  Not much else seen or shot at that spot.

Decided to head back to Slipper, but before we left Aldies we spotted workups so undiebandit jumped in, he shot a big koheru, which led to a number of kingis appearing out of nowhere!  he grabbed another gun and shot 1.

he managed to shoot another 1 then called me over so i could have a crack at one of the others hanging round but by the time I got there, they had disappeared and I put another shot into his.
spent ages searching for a kingi of my own but the timing of the kingis vs my breathold it just wasn't to be.
There was heaps of baitfish around and its the first time I have ever seen so many snapper cruising mid water, of course with the epic viz there was no way to get close to any of them!

While the weather topside turned **** in the water it was pretty epic.

Big thanks to Undiebandit for the spot on the boat and for sending me home with heaps of fish for the freezer!
