the deep v gives them awesome ride but need a lil more horsepower to run them. Guys who have had 90s have been satisfied but the ones with 115 seem to be stoked. Go 115 if the budget allows but also interested in others opinions

If you want reliability go with Yamaha, the F100 will go well on that hull, well worth the extra dollars for a 4 stroke, you wont be disappointed.

i am was thinking of the 90etec and also looking at fuel economy, resale later in time and the differance in price is about $6500 thats for the 115 2s yammie just need to know the pros and cons $6500 differance is a lot of cash that can buy a few tank gas and a good few services and beers and is the noise on a 115 that much louder and does it use more fuel than the 90etec in other words can i justify the $6500 or

so is the f100 better than the 115 2 s in fuel use and service

Yes they will use approximately 60% less fuel compared to the 115 2 stroke, they are easy to service, servicing costs are a little bit more than a 2 stroke. If you want reliability go the Yamaha. Yamahas back up and after sales support, warranty is second to none. If it was me i'd be spending the extra and going with the Yamaha.
With the E-tec you still have to service them every year and the oil and sparkplugs are expensive, so you are not getting much of a saving.

I used to have a 200 ho etec on a 7m alloy great engine, my new rig a 1 ton havier with A yamaha F300 V8 i find the yamaha is cheaper on the same round trip, no expensive oil need and much quiter. I would never go back to an etec after owning a yamaha 4 stroke. Makes me wounder how reliable the etec claims are.

Hi SB-I can quote the 115 Optimax that I have on my 5.5. Goes really good and very economical. There are many outboards on the market that are good but if your budget allows get something that is fuel injected. You won't be disappointed-one of the threads claims 60% better?? That may a bit over the top but this Optimax uses approx 40% less than a carbed 90 2stroke Merc I had on a previous boat. Also do some homework and check the weight of the 4 stroke equivalent whether 90 or 115 as it may make quite a difference to how the bum on the 5.5 sits in the water. Personally I wouldn't want any more weight on the back than the 115 Opti. If you've got plenty of water and are not risking dragging the bottom anywhere.........no problem. Hope this helps.

Any of the top brand fourstrokes are great, Suzuki, honda Yamaha..and the 2 stroke optimax
Resale with a 4 stroke will be better. There are threads on here detailing why an Etec would possibly not be your best choice.

Have you got some figures about fuel burn on the F100? Sounds like Yamaha must have come close to discovering the 'holy grail' if it is genuinely 60% more fuel efficient that the 115 2 stroker. As far as I can figure out the SWS 115 is 23lph at 4000rpm cruise and the F100 is 15lph at 4000rpm cruise for a difference of ~35%. If the F100 is truly burning ~9lph at 4000rpm then there is some awesome new technology that they need to very quickly roll out into their larger engines. Just imagine a F200 cruising at 18lph instead of the 30lph that they currently do.

perhaps it was mean to read "60% of the 115's fuel rate"?

| That would be more correct, although given that the 115 will cruise faster, it is still a bit misleading. My experience so far is that 'apples for apples' a typical 4 stroke is approx 25% more efficient than a late model 2 stroke at cruise and a bit better than this at trolling speeds. It would be nice to think that the latest engines are 40%+ more efficient etc, but if they are I haven't seen or heard of it yet.

So the differance is +-25% between the 4stroke and the 2 stroke in fuel efficient is it the really worth all that extra cash for a 4s and im looking at 115 2s and a F100 and a 90 or 115 optimax because i can see the green, eco benefit no more oil tank to fill and that smell which i love is the noise differance that much between 4s and 2s

go 4 stroke dude ,no messing with oil tanks and as said the resale will be better worth paying the extra for my opinion

Noise difference is great at idle, not so much at cruise. Resale is much better and easier. You also get more range out of your tank which may be important in a boat that size with I guess a small tank. If you troll a bit, the 4 stroke is a big improvement on fuel use, noise, and smell. If you cruise around at 4000rpm from spot to spot and then drift or anchor, but never far from shore, the main difference is in the resale. If you are mechanically minded at all the SWS 2 stroke Yamahas are incredibly easy to maintain yourself.

what does sws mean? Yamaha model mate, Salt Water Series. Have mates with Optis and they love em, but some folk of course hate them and reckon they are problematic... I think you will get moans and groans and goods and bads with any motor these days. However, all the Jap motors seemed to have got better over the years whereas Mercs are good as well, sadly we have lost OMC with Evinrude/Johnson to Etec and don't forget the Tohatsu, a good basic reliable motor, merc usa now own Tohatsu and I believe all Jap mercs up to 50hp are Tohatsu, same with Mariner...

When I first got my Opti 115 it ran like a dream and in fact except for a bit more of a "bark" coming from the exhaust one would struggle to tell the difference between it and a 4 stroke it is so even in the beat. However I had it for about 3 months (it was 2 years old when I got it) when it lost a cylinder intermittently. It was still under warrantee so took it to the agent and they fixed it FOC immediately no questions asked. It was an ignition module on No. 3 cylinder and according to the agent is a known fault with all of the Opti's up to 150hp. Etecs aren't exempt from this either as my friend's 115 Etec fried the computor module and he waited 2 months for a new one to come from Aussie. My point here is every make and model will have a glitch somewhere in their existence especially in the first 3-4 years and if you look hard enough on all of them you will find something. Make sure that what ever you get that you have a good agent close

| so true , last season fished out of a 5.5 with a 115 2s we would burn up to 120 litres a day gamefishing, our mates similar size boat with a f100 used up to 70litres for the same distance travelled! also the 2s chewed a ****load of oil and a couple of sets of plugs. GO the 4s

I have the 2003 model f100 on my 5m quintrex, & love it!
it came standard with a 2 stroke 90hp, we upgraded to the 4 stroke for an extra 4k i think..
after 8-9 years and just under 600hrs its the best boating decision i have made.......

from the long term point the 4s or a opti or etec will be better than a plain 2s the cost will balance out as I'm going to keep it for a long time the price of fuel is also not gonna come down is their any good dealers around still because you hear some shocking stories sometime the way the sharks screwed them over or just don't care type of attitude and all over bad service dealers

dude i had a 5.5 with a 90hp merc on it and it was crap go the 115hp specliy if you want to have a bit of power in reserve (ie bar crossings or crap conditions ). you will regret the 90hp i can garntee that ohter option could be a 100hp 4 stroke

I always seem to get beaten up when I enter this dabate - but here goes. Further to the comments from Fishing Addiction and Family Affair (hmm both FA's) the 5.5 surtees needs power - they have no strakes or chines to plane on so need more speed than other hull of the same size before they get up on top of the water. If you look at other threads you will see that they also dont carry too much weight in the bum well, ie a heavy 4 stroke motor will not work well - so the balance is to get as much power with as little weight as you can - The F100 is a compromise, I'm not sure a good one as it's heavier than a 90 2 stroke but not really any more powerful - i'd seriously look at the lightest 115 you can find - if it's an optimax or etec so be it.

Shark boy. i have had a simalar setup to what your looking at. I would not go below 100hp on that hull. Also think would go 4-stroke if can reach that budget as wouldnt ever regret the reliability @economy. As for the extra weight of only 10kg then wouldnt worry about that as on the opti specs they dont include the inbuilt oil tank of 4kg full, so that close its not worth worrying bout. The oil cost @ comsumption is also quite high. REALLY wouldnt reccomend an opti or etec. my picks would be yammy f100, f115, honda 115 or sws 2-stroke 115. Moki marco is right about weight at back but throw a hydrafoil 300 on @ youll have no probs.

My dad has just put an order in on a Surtees 5.5HT. He has gone with a 90hp Honda. When he talked to the factory guys they recommended a 90hp as the best balance for that hull. I can understand dealers being a bit biased and wanting to flog off cheap packages, but this was a guy who'd already decided on the hull and just wanted advice about what to power it with. They didn't see any need for a larger motor.
Personally I like having excess grunt but he's a bit more conservative. I'll let you know how it goes....

Had a 90hp on mine, underpowered in my opinon with 3-4 guys on board. Swapped to a 115hp, so 25hp extra (almost 1/3 extra horespower) made a huge difference.

Suzuki make darn fine 4 strokes too. My choice would be either the suzi or the yamaha, 4strokes, 100-115hp.

Dave, i put a 90 suzi on my 5.5 ht. its fine for me, but if your dad will be carting heaps of people and dive tanks, belts etc id consider going bigger. I normally only have 3 on mine at once, and either spear gear or rods...works well with that weight. Super quiet and cheap to run. I leave mine idling quite a bit and youd hardly know there is an engine going apart from the water jet. Ta, dave

Yeah I think it'll be fine for him Davo. The boat will be used 50/50 for diving and fishing, 2-4POB but he isn't exactly a speed demon. We've talked to a few people who have similar rigs and while some like having extra power, others felt that putting a heavier engine on the back turned the 5.5 into a wallowing pig.

Agreed ,also somthing said for power to weight ratio - we did a very sophisticated on water test with my boat and one with a F115 from a timed standing start, same hull,he eventaully caught up and passed me but I would have been far enough ahead for my mate who was on board to start laughing in horror (he has a Yammie F150).
I can do 33kts, he could do more 36sih?,I could get out of the hole and on the plane much quicker...so I reckon your right what is safer my 90HP DI or a 115 "more powerful" wallowing 4 banger?..oh and he though I used less fuel also.
I like the sound of the F100 though, that would be my pick if I was trolling/idleing alot.

The low rev range is surely more important when it comes to safety and ability to control a boat in difficult seas, high revs being reserved for cruising on flat water. My Merc 2-stroke has its faults, but at least it's got heaps of torque. Reminds me, anybody got a reliable source for torque/hp vs rpm figures for the main brands?
|
Posted By: Moki Marko
Date Posted: 02 Feb 2012 at 7:01pm
...always a bone of contention that manufactures don't publish torque figures, would be so useful for boaties, even the stated HP figures have traditionally been a marketing tool, and not very accurate, interesting how we usually consider cars by their cc rating not the HP. I think with boat engines it pays to consider the engine size as well as the stated hp. Be interested to hear your follow-up opinion on yr dad's boat Dave, keep us posted.

Ive got a workmate 5.5 with a yamaha 90a two stroke on it, seem to go fast enough ? 27 kts two people 24 when fully loaded.
Only hit 40 hrs last time out so might even losen up a bit. No premix so thats all good. Yamalube is a bit expensive 60 $ for four liters approx I reckon I use about 15 to 20 liters petrol an hour running and that seems to do a litre of oil so 30 to 40 dollars a hour approx mite be a bit lower than that on a good day. Been caught out on the wairarapa coast by the sneaky southerlies sitting on sea anchor too long and punched buried the thing for 10 miles with no problems. If there were heaps of other boats overtaking me I might think shes underpowered but havent really thought that but like you this is my first real boat, apart from zodiacs and macs. Havent had any probs with either yet, touch wood, apparently the yammy 3 cylinder 90 design is 25 years old with only cosmetic changes so it must be fairly strong, but a bit noisy, smelly and thirsty but she starts up first pop all the time. For my final two cents i reckon it mite come down to what your general launch spot is like, ours is a bay with heaps of rocks in it so a light motor with the ballast tanks closed and she floats in knee deep water and is easy to push around. If you have a nice concrete ramp to use upsizing would be ok.

41 - if you are doing a litre of oil for 20l of fuel in that engine it is not running right. Should be between 50:1 and 100:1 fuel/oil ratio unless your engine is double oiling during the run in. You might want to get it checked.

Yep Tagit you are right its probably a little less than that went out last friday was 40lts for of fuel for bit less than a litre of oil, now that i think of it i have counted all the oil i put in the fuel for the initial run in period as well the motor to get my figures, sweet feeling better already Thanks.
