went for a paddle out from Opito on Sunday for a bit of a landbased fish off one of the Islands, got there nice & early & set up. It was fairly slow but we came away with 2 nice pannies & 2 that weighed 13 pounds, wasn't too bad considering the amount of boats that buzzed us all day !

dropped about 3 or 4 good ones (using whole kahawai fillets) it would start with a slow run & get quicker & quicker letting them take the bait  for a reasonable time I would strike & come up with zip no weight at all  it was good to be out there all the same

happy new year everyone!

Cheers, P.C.

Peter did you notice if the fish had rolled the bait over the hooks after dropping the bait???????

hi lethal, I had a whole fillet & cut through the flesh down the middle of the fillet & then folded it back on its self & sewed the hook through it several times to hold it that way. Then rolled the hook into the flesh exposing the hooks point, a couple of half hitches at the top. you might be right there about the hook as the bait came back in a mess. but the thing was I didn't even feel the fish drop it, as soon as I struck there was nothing there! this happened more than once. I have had trev's do a simular thing but I can't imagine them taking a bait as big as that sitting on the bottom?

ive chocked a 26lber with a whole Kahawai fillet.... didnt even fight at all just floated to the surface belly up...... it wasnt till i looked inside that i found it must have tried to bring the bait back up to get rid off it and the hook got stuck in its throat......  but getting back to your bait i now use only long ways cut Kahawai fillets so im getting 2 baits out of one fillet....... this tends to stop the fish covering the points..... those bigger fish seam to sense when somethings wrong and can spit quick if they need to.......

yeh its a bit frustrating lethal, its nice to load up & feel the full weight/power (even if only for a short time) before they spit it though!
