We need more Dotcoms, unlike some new immigrants bludging in  state houses on  benefits. Spending $4mil on renovating a house you don't own must make him the best tenant in NZ. I bet he spends a fortune here. Good luck to him.

The media are quick to forget that this fella was totally upfront about his history with the Department of Immigration when he applied for residency (He had to pay a $10m bond). On top of that he made a $10m donation to the people of Christchurch and also put half a million dollar injection into the RWC.

The good ol' media eh? - bunch of weasel munching maggots!

isnt that what we did to the Chinese guy that took off with 10mil and the guy that murdered his wife, stuck her in the boot of her car then took his daughter to Melbourne and just left her there while he dissapared to the USA?

Not even close to being similar in anyway. Kim Dotcom is a NZ resident I'm not even sure that Kim's even been to the States.. So you wouldn't have an issue if some kiwi teenager who's never left our shores could be extradited to the US for building a website that breached copyright laws? BS

The funny thing is this guy will probably get life for hosting other people's links which YouTube,Facebook & google do many more times over yet the murderer you speak of will be out in 15. This whole case is a farce.

Posted By: Jet_ski_fisher
Date Posted: 31 Jan 2012 at 10:37am
What puzzles me is that all he did was "host" and other users posted links was he to go through all of them to see what was legal or not? i don't think so...whole case is BS

I was thinking along similar lines Barrie and that maybe we have just repaid the Yanks for returning the kung fu kid to us in return for a rather larger fish that we will no doubt send back to them.

If it smells like  tiko then it probably is....

Nonsense NZ has an extradition treaty with the states so the "murderer" who killed "in NZ" was clearly extradited back to where the crime took place.
Dotcoms (so called) crime was cyber. You can't compare apples to nectarines as a few of you are.
The yanks think they can run the net & have gone after an easy hi rolling target. Coinsedence that this guy was arrested a day after SOPA was rejected?

In cyber space no one can hear you cream!  on wards to the subject at hand. the american's think they can run every thing and any thing, they butt in on other peoples problems and just cause mayhem where ever they go, look at there crash on the financial sector's. it dam near crippled the world. if they was to go after every single person who uploads stuff, then do it now. not when and if they can find bs to invent. it's a case of what do we get out of it cases....they did not know what was uploaded to there servers. who could have known what was uploaded...they are not at fault, trace the ip's and go after the uploader's...

I tend to agree but also see that internet theft is distroying the film and music industry. Maybe they are well over paid?
By getting rid of the storage companies, it makes it less inviting for others to do it and then they can track the single users?
If Dotcom has broken the laws (and by doing it here or allowing USA users to use his company) then he has to face the courts.
He has the resourses and if the USA is wrong he can sue them.

Who said its destroying the film & music industry? The movie moguls have had a monopoly on the system for ever. They're the real criminals here. My whole iTunes library is ripped from the net for free,as are 50% of others. I paid iTunes my $40 and they converted it from an ugly 100kbps to iTunes quality of 256kbps & legitimized my entire library authorized by the music industry who receive a piece of that $40. They have moved with the times & know "you can't stop the hustle" ...

You say "by getting rid of the storage companies" Ok then get rid of the "storage companies" .. See ya YouTube, see ya Google, see ya Facebook, see ya Yahoo These are the godfather sites that can't be touched for far worse than megaupload. These companies pay out huge hush money, they are forever getting sued.

But back to my original point, Barrie, you wouldn't have an issue if "your son" broke so called U.S copywriter laws in NZ & the U.S wanted to drag his butt over to the states to put him in front of the firing squad? The Nazi States of America are corrupt! End of story....

Ps read in to SOPA which the yanks tried to pass

My 20 year old daughter (my youngest) also use to steal both movies and music. I pointed out how it was no better or worst than a guy that had not paid his account with me for $1400 or the woman who ripped my wife of for $7000.
Nobody was interested in trying to collect the $1400 and we were also told to forget about the $7000. (We didnt and got judgement then they were all keen)
Theft is theft, stealing is stealing.
My daughter pays for her movies and music now with no exceptions.
Your choice is your choice and I now understand your stance.
Is Dotcom evil, no I dont belive he is.
Is he an easy target, yes I do belive he is but IF he has broken the law, he can expect to be found guilty and if not he wont.
Just like any other person that breaks the law

Barrie some of us can not get to the movies and whats the difference between paying 10 bucks to watch it in town than watching it at home? or paying 30 or 40 bucks when it hits the dvd in stores?
What about bill gates and HIS windows. now we all know for a fact he stole the idea of windows and made it his own..and is he on trial? nope never will be. as for me i stopped downloading games and brought them instead only cause i can now play online :) pew pew pew!!!

He certainly presented himself well on telly. His comment about him costing the music industry $500M or whatever it was over a 2 week period therefore he was costing the music industry BILLIONS a year just from his site kind of suggests the FBI should be talking to the music industry.

God I feel sorry for Mr Dotcom...not only sorry for him but the rest of us who enjoy freedom of speech and being able to use such an awesome site for legit transferring large files.
I have used megaupload to back up important files while reinstalling a bugged windows as I had no other media to back up to.

What has happened is the US of A holes have made an example of him because they can.
He's been an out there dude with his money in the past which I guess with the help of the media can make him look like a bad guy, but he's doing what I would do if I had that much money!!
Good on him for coming here an spending over $200,000 a month just on house keeping!! thats big money for nz!
He is small fry compared to other Corporate sites such as "GOOGLE" or "MICROSOFT" that do exactly what his company does.  OFFER FREE BANDWIDTH AND STORAGE P2P.

Talking to people about it the media has already done there job, somehow people think that he made his money via piracy??? Thats just stupid, how? is he selling pirated films? Music? no he makes his money becouse his site is popular (advertising etc), and not just because a few people upload illegal content.  It makes no sense to me, the site has a legally binding contract when ever you upload something a pop up box makes you "accept the terms and conditions"  one of which is that you cannot upload "illigall content"!!
He has given the film, music industry FREE RAIN on his site allowing them to police there content...

How he can be arrested as if he was a freaken terrorist is just mind boggling, how NZ bends over and takes it hard an fast from the US of A holes I have no idea.  We are loosing out big time with his funds frozen(stolen).

His company relies on him having mega bandwidth, no doubt he has servers that NEED a massive connection just like any other massive service provider.  Nothing illegal about running a company is there?

Its like asking questions why an air port holds so much high explosive gas....hmmm must be terrorist too.

I loved his point about the industry still using an outdated buisnes plan...its so true, if they released movies, games at the same time world wide there would be a hell of a lot less piracy going on.

Its up to the film industry to police the net for there films, and I don't think it really is hurting them anyway.  If anything it helps advertise there products...
Its been going on for years anyway, ever used your tape recorder to tape a song playing on the radio?? Piracy!!

I saw the 10mil to Christchurch as his "fee" for getting residency in NZ, and good PR.  But perhaps I'm just getting more cynical as I get older.

It is embarrasing how our government & police are falling over themselves to do whatever the US government wants.  It used to be the case that you had to commit a crime to get arrested, but now you just have to upset a few fat cats in holywood.  I'm not saying Dotcom is whiter than white, but did he actually commit a crime?  John Key must really want to get that US trade agreement signed up.

You know what pissess me off about this bull**** from the media companies saying "it's hurting us in the pocket"

Dark Knight, I had a rip of it before it came out.  I still watched it twice in the cinema's, bought it on itunes, have the dvd and will probably get the blu ray when I get a player.

same thing with batman begins, same thing will happen with the next one.  Have done it with a few others as well.

It set record sales figures ffs

I am not they only one who has done this.

It's complete bull****.

And if those sorts of sales our on the fringe of the bell curve, then the should quit QQing about it and make better movies more often.

Simple.
