hi guys looking at getting a shimano torium 30 gonna use it for a bit of jigging and live baiting..i've noticed a few are saying not enough drag but more than enough off a kayak? ....what are your thoughts on the torium 30 and what rods have you guys matched them up with cheers...

torium 30s are nice reels, lots of good fish caught on them, matt watson got a marlin on his torium. all good until you hook a good sized kingie jigging and then you wish you could have stopped it after it has busted you off! but in saying that some big fish have been landed on light gear so.........

Just go for a Torium 20.... smaller, lighter reel and will be better suited off the yak. The new version of the Shimano Backbone 200gram jig rods are surprisingly nice for their price. A lot thinner and easier to handle than there older versions. Look at giving those two a nudge mate!

| One of my first setups was a torium 30 on a Ian Miller 400 T-Curve, did the job but got smoked a lot. If your not fishing wicked structure them nothing wrong with them for an entry level set. Still got 2 of them now, use them for everything |

Fished a torium 30 as an early jigging setup, would say it is alright for minimal big fish action. The dartanium drag washers will wear out quickly under continued heavy use. Will need to watch the anti-reverse as well. Shouldn't be as much of a problem from a kayak as you will probably be using lower drag settings. I use mine as a snapper reel now. Have also used the 20, which I would go for first, same drag just less line capacity, you probably shouldn't get spooled depending on what diameter line you are using. Have used both reels on a variety of rods and have performed fine. I guess you will need to take into account rod length (for kayak), what line weight and type you will be using and how much pain you want to put on the fish (and yourself).

i use the 30 and found it ok, kings to 25k, makos and other stuff, just waiting for it to return from its service, the drag washers were split in half, found it hard to believe but not even shimano are bullet proof, certainly recommend it for what you want though, all reels break down some where along the line. ------------- Ultimate GAME Fishing Adventures. As Iceman, Andy and Uhunter stated, the Torium 16, 20 and 30 all have the same drag rating. Go small and use your thumb when extra drag required.

| I've got a torium 20 that i use for jigging with the 200gram rod. I use that off my kayak with 15k braid and 5-6 k of drag is more than enough - i really wouldn't want to go much more i reckon. Especially off a yak. If you match it up with pe3 or pe4 braid and chuck it on a 200g/300g rod it would be a great combo. The torium 30's one and only advantage over the 20 is that it has more line capacity, and really if you're spooling it with braid (even 50lb stuff) the 20 has more than enough capacity for any fish you're likely to catch off a yak or in the gulf. Also the 30 has a wider spool than the 20 which in my opinion does make it a bit harder to jig with. |

I've got a torium 30, my main livebait reel. Have used it to jig a bit but fairly bulky. I got the 30 over a 20 as I ususally do a puka trip once a year & regularly fish 300m so wanted the extra capacity.
If you dont need the extra line go for the 20
