Hi guys im a newbie. i started fishing last November and am now hooked on fishing. I have a heavish okuma rod and a cheap jarvis walker spinning reel. im looking to get some new gear preferably shimano as my mates reckon they are an awesome brand. 

I want a light rod that can handle 8-10kg and a good but low to moderate priced reel or just a good shimano combo.

Im trying to target snapper,I often fish just out on a boat in the auckland area passed rangitoto island. I would like it if i could use this rod off the rocks/whalf aswell for days when too many people are on the boat and there is no room for me.

i prefer spinning reels so yeah any shimano spinning reels & rods / combos that u guys recommend i should buy?$300 is probably my limit.

Hi ya Hitch.

Go and talk to your local Shimano retailer and see what they can do you a:

Shimano Baitrunner 4000D and Backbone Elite 4-8KG 7' 2pce rod.....you may need to find just a few more coins than your budget allows but a really solid combo that should tick your boxes.

If you get to an impasse on the coins have a look instead at the Shimano Baitrunner DL4000 FA.

shimano 6500b should sit in your budget nicely and they really are a legend of a reel

Could this gear you suggested handle a 20 pound snap? I just checked online and i have seen the reel for about  $270 - 300 and the rod was about $120ish. Im planning to go to Norcross or FCO next week do you think there would be  Shimano Baitrunner 4000 already in a combo?

@cosmo is that better than the 4000? what do the numbers mean?

Don't forget to cost in the braid if buying seperately. A combo is usually all set up with braid etc. And it does not pay to go and buy the cheap stuff either. It will drive you nuts.

prob more 20 pounder plus snaps been caught in nz with a 6500 baitrunner than any other reel i would bet ??  every one should have at least 1 in there quiver , we often have 3 or 4 straylined out the back of the berley trail and get the moochers on em . the penn 9500 and 8500 are just as good to and a bit cheaper have seen em for 160 ish lately , seen me mate wrestle and subdue a 30 kg king on one at ranfurly bank was absolutly screaming and took 35 mins and quite a bit of luck but held together to win the scrap .

Just been thinking on and reread your post....

New suggestion for you...

BTR 4500B on an Aquatip 6/10kg 7' 1 pce (boat) and get a Aquatip Surf 6/10kg 12' 2pce (Landbased)

That way you can interchange the reel for whatever fishing you are doing......

there are plenty of nice Shimano gears on T/M as your link suggests, A 2nd hand baitrunner would suit you well, my only suggestion is you have it serviced and you are good to go, cosmetics etc dont mean anything to the fish but you dont want to buy one thats been dragged up the road, so if you go this way I may also suggest you get hold of Scuzzymoto on these boards, he is an importer and I am hearing some amazing things about his rods, yes it would be nice to buy all brand new but beggers cant be choosers and like I said the fish wont know.

Does anyone know if the aquatip is light? i want a strong but light as possible rod.
